This is the type of question CFC should be asking themselves and planning for it at different levels eg 700k, 800k, 900k, $1m.

Looking at Wells vs Beams has implications for what to do with JDG in my opinion.

Wells only managed 15 games in 3 years and took up too much cap space for that return.

Beams has only managed 9 games in 2 years and I imagine is on similar or more money than Wells. Where it gets worse is if he doesn't play any / many games in his two remaining contracted years AND that he cost us two first round draft picks (minus a third rounder and an upgrade in third round).

Implication for JDG? We should make use of free agency if he or other players don't sign for at least slight unders. If CFC pay JDG too much money it would cost us a Mihocek, Greenwood or Cox or several like Wills, Appleby, Madgen AND it will have an opportunity cost. For the same money or less we could target a Cameron AND benefit from whatever picks we get for trading JDG. Sure Cameron or similar won't have the same longevity as the younger JDG but if they take similar cap space you use it on the years a Cameron has left and then target another.

We'd all love JDG to stay (especially to get another two games for any father sons) as he is a matchwinner but it has to be for the right price. CFC must be in talks with free agents to see what money we could get them for and we only pay JDG his worth relative to what we could otherwise get.

Wells voluntarily took a massive cut in his final year.

As a free agent he was definitely worth a punt for the two years where he actually impacted on the cap.

Its not in the same ballpark as the Beams decision.

Wells was not worth the punt.
He was 31 with massive soft tissue injuries.
Even with the pay cut he took in year 3---he still earned $1.2m for the first 2 years to play a handful of games.

It's also not a coincidence he has a job in "recruiting" now post career, with no experience in the field.
This would have been the "take a pay cut now and we will look after you later" agreement.

Ironically it wasnt soft tissue injuries that were his main problem. He suffered a couple of freak contact injuries that had little or nothing to do with his alleged/exaggerated past history of being injury prone over a very successful 249 games at North.

Worth a punt for mine (the third year was always going to be a debacle though)

Wells was very much worth a punt. He was coming off a 19 game season in 2016 where he'd finished 4th in the Syd Barker medal, and we were desperate to replace Swanny.

I think that's what they asked him to do last time they extended him for 2 years; when North made him that big offer to jump ship.

I agree he doesn't warrant any more than that but I think he took under's last time (in his mind) on the semi promise he'd be rewarded with more on his next contract. Maybe this is a bit of a sticking point. The shrinking of the cap isn't helping here either.

Then we part ways, send him to Essendon for Merrett.

Unless he has a cracker of an offer somewhere else (which it doesn’t sound like he does) he’d be better off signing on for 2 years, still on good coin, like Darcy did.

By the time he comes OOC again hopefully his court case will be done, the player payment situation will have sorted itself out and he will be a RFA; enabling him to test the market again (perhaps with 2 years of solid footy behind him).

Watching Brownlow last night and just wondering JDG”s best polling year? Read that he’s only finished in top 10 of Copeland once? Hardly deserving of superstar wages.

He's still playing like that young player (sub 21) who plays a blinder and shows his "potential" but hasn't matured into a consistent player yet, problem is he's nearing 25.

Got 12 votes in 2018, the same year he ran 8th in the Copeland.

We'll cave in and give him a million a year now after the Cameron announcement.

No we wont
Nathan will burn our picks and bring in Gunston....then he will give a multi yr deal to Jetta so that will be a 29yr old and a 31yr old arriving.....

For a forward that actually a decent vote tally, especially in a Collingwood forward line.

He does not deserve a million. Seems to be a drama queen around contract time.

Yeah I know. Like last time when he re-signed for way unders when he had 5 year million dollar per year offers from North and St Kilda. Was a real pain in the ass....

He's negotiating a contract and trying to get the best for himself, just like all players do. Grundy did it earlier this year, and we overpaid big time for him and will continue to do so for another 7 years.

Even if DeGoey leaves, its not like the club will magically replace him with someone decent. All the top end talent have already nominated elsewhere, all we will get will be geriatrics looking to add to their superannuation funds.

Funny that you mention Grundy being overpaid when he took unders to stay here long term

What was the competing offer from Adelaide?

What was the competing offer from Adelaide?
The amount of the competing offer from Adelaide was never mentioned. The Media was speculating Grundy was worth anything between $900k and $1.2m. The sticking point between the Pies and Grundy was the length of the contract. The Pies were "steadfast" that they would not offer more than 5 years, and Grundy indicated he would not accept anything less than 7 years. With the Pies great negotiating skills they were able to settle at 7.

Then I guess Crows offered him a 7 year deal or someone else
