I think you will find the coaching staff does actually see things like a lot of us do but are somewhat handcuffed by what they can say and do during season. Reason being it affects the value of players come off season - which in turn limits our ability to maximise our off season player movements.

Is that from an insiders view, ie you have spoken to insiders, or are you guessing that's how they think?? If you are guessing, then I don't know how relevant that comment is.

It really hasn't worked in our favour of late
What do you mean? We offered some of them long term contracts, and they accepted because they were happy with the, and being at the, club. Dumb management by us, nothing to do with the happiness of players and their desire to stick around at the club.

REH does the contract of players have to be ratified by KT or others at board level? It just amazes me that we offered HH a 5 yr deal...I don't think I'm commenting based on hindsight but I just wonder what measures we have in place that scrutinises long term contracts.

I don't know about the board but I know KT signs off on it. He would pass it onto the board but I don't know if they would or could block it.

Remember we have to pay 95% of the salary cap and the AFL base+ equal TV monies distributions at the moment covers about 98% of the salary cap figure for all clubs, before any additional distributions to the clubs. Sure players get paid outside the cap amounts and there are the Additional Service Agreements which also have to be paid 95% of that cap amount, which for the last 2 or 3 years has been set at 10% of the salary cap amount, and this can be payed by a sponsor / associate of the club and/or the club for promo type work.

So the club doesn't have a lot of room to move if the strategy a couple of years ago was, with board backing, that we have to offer our top line players longer term deals to stop being raped by free agency. The real important stuff for me if I was a board member, would be the out clauses in these long term deals and what the AFL and AFLPA allow and don't allow in out type clauses.

Longer term deals are a consequence of efforts to ward off players considering leaving under Free Agency....

Players have all the power now.

herald sun reporting we are interested in steel. We would love to get him, but saints are also interested. We have a higher draft pick them in each round though, of course we've got no second.

Who is steel? A kid to be drafted or someone on a club's list?

The only shocking thing about players being shopped around by the club is the fact that Ken didn't drop some of them when he had the oppurtunity.

If he doesn't see their future being at Port then why did he leave underperformers in the team for so long?

Steele and Austin played footy and cricket together from day dot, and have come through the Canberra ranks of Australian rules football to both be drafted in to the AFL in 2014.

Despite beginning their elite careers together in the GWS Giants academy, they were separated at the NAB Draft in which Steele went on to the Giants list as pick 24 and Austin was picked for Port Adelaide at 69.

Steele admits it was tough to go on without Logan when he wasn't picked up by the Giants, but he knew that they both had taken another step closer to making their dream a reality.

"We've obviously dreamed about playing AFL footy since we were pretty young, but never really thought it was a possibility until we started playing well in under 18's and got invited to the draft," Steele said.

"I was pretty shattered when he went to Port, especially when I found out that the Giants would have taken Logan if they had the next pick, but we both ended up on an AFL list and you can't complain about that."

Doesn't make sense. I thought GWS could simply have nominated him as an academy selection. They then could have matched Ports bid. But they didn't and at best would have rookie listed him.

They used up all their picks with a Draft Index Value to trade/give away at the draft.
