Re: Luke Ball wants to be a Pie

I am suprised at how much better Luke Ball seems to have gotten as a player since announcing he wants to come to Collingwood. A lot of people have been suggesting Carlton got the wrong end of the bargain offering pick 11 for McClean, I don't think Ball is an all that different prospect.

If we can get him cheaply it will help us in the short term. He has good leadership. Works hard in tight and gets the Ball out. On the other hand he can't kick 40m, even within that kicking range struggles to hit targets regularly and lacks pace off the mark. People have raised his draft camp sprint speeds but the injuries may have taken it out of him, either that or he has a good top speed but takes a fair while to get up to it because he certainly doesn't look quick on a footy field.

Short term he'd be a good get. A younger O'Bree. Helping in tight and releasing pressure of Pendles and Swan. Long term guys like Sidebottom, Beams, McCarthy have that hardness people suggest we lack, the just don't have the body to follow through. Long term they will the other thing they all have over Ball is good disposal and great vision. McCarthy also has good pace. Wellingham is another young mid who is a handy ball winner.

I am all for getting him but not for anything dramatic as I don't think he will improve us dramatically, more a small improvement for a short period.

Re: Luke Ball wants to be a Pie

I don't want to trade with any of the players from our future spine. That includes Dawes, Reid and Brown. Although if push comes to shove I would trade Dawes.

I think we could try setting up a 3 way with Sydney. If we secured Jolly, we could even trade with Fraser. I would be happy to trade with Goldsack who is fringe and doesn't hold a Key Position.

Maybe:

Picks 14 & St.Kilda's Pick 16 to Sydney for Jolly.

Sydney give their 2nd round to Saints

We give Goldsack and pick 30 and Fraser to Saints

Re: Luke Ball wants to be a Pie

Surprised you guys are interested in Ball after specifically drafting this type of player last year in Beams and Sidebottom.

This is not the same player as a few years back.

Re: Luke Ball wants to be a Pie

He NEEDED to be a pie.

Dick, Cox, Goldsack, Wood, Sidebottom and now Ball.

It's all falling into place.

We should play them all round 1 and run out to the Benny Hill theme. :)

Maybe we could chase Palmer and Johncock just round it out ;)

Good post Shawthing. I think it boils down to the fact we need another hard body in our midfield for the next couple of years because thats how long it will take for the younger guys to fill out. I guess there is always the hope that our medical staff will be able to improve his injury issues as well - he may be able to get back closer to his best. Agree about not giving up too much but by the fact he is out of contract and has nominated us means he should come cheap. Doubt he would cost more than our second rounder.

Re: Luke Ball wants to be a Pie

Do people think we would contemplate the PSD for Ball if Saints get pernickity?

Re: Luke Ball wants to be a Pie

He wouldn't reach us in the PSD. Our pick would be too late.

Geez mate no need to trade away the farm
pick 14, 30, goldsack and fraser out
ball, jolly in
we're getting killed on that deal.
14 and 30 out only
ball and jolly in
if we're to trade fraser and goldy out we need to get more picks in.

Yep, Essendon and Richmond would we willing to pay as much as us for Ball, so no hope for us in the PSD.

The only teams we have struggled with in terms of the tough stuff are Geelong, St Kilda and Hawthorn, whom are pretty much the three teams with the hardest bodied biggest midfielders in the comp.

We will NOT bridge the gap to them with an extra hard body, because the primary reason we lose to them isn't toughness (although it is part of it) it's a distinct lack of skill in comparison. These teams hit targets lace out, even under pressure, we struggle to sometimes under none.

Ball's a secondary target, whom shouldn't cost more than a solitary second round pick, or third round plus a Stanley equivalent player. Given St Kilda would have no use for a Stanley equivalent player, they should take the second round pick and run.

Re: Luke Ball wants to be a Pie

Apparently StKilda just gave away their first pick, 17, for Andrew Lovett.

I wonder how that would effect our chances of getting Ball.

He can easily put a price on his head and just say to the other clubs pick me at your own peril, he can simply refuse to play with them. Clubs arn't pricks despite what many think, they wouldn't pick up a player that doesnt want to play for them...

Pick 30 and Macaffer is my go, he fulfils their need for a half forward, and although I think he will be a great player, we have plenty of his type.

He wont sit out of footy. He wont shaft the Saints and he wont make it to us in the PSD.
Second rounder and a player/late pick will be enough for the Saints.

if that is true it would increase our chances but they might want 14 and I think he is worth 14 I would rather use it to get Jolly

If that's true it actually helps our chances. Essendon are our main rivals for Ball, if those two clubs have just completed a sizeable trade and left Ball out of it, we're looking very good.

Was thinking the exact same thing.

Definitely helps our chances of getting Ball as Essendon were our biggest threat IMO.

Ball wants us. Lets get him, sensibly though.

Re: Luke Ball wants to be a Pie

The only reasonable trade for Ball is for your pick 14. We just traded our pick 16 for lovett so I hope we look to trade Ball for a first round draft pick. We won't let him go cheaply.

A 2nd teir player and a 2nd or 3rd round pick doesn't suit our needs. We have a very strong list.

14 is not going to happen mate so lose him for nothing....

We don't lose anything... you lose everything! :thumbsu:

First of all Leon Davis alone in a straight swap is not worth Luke Ball.

My point?

Davis is miles ahead of Ball and is now A-grade.

Even with that in mind, clubs wouldn't be offering a first round pick for Leon.

If Leon cannot fetch a first round pick, you are dreaming if you think a player who you had no faith in throughout the year and gave him limited game time and demoted to the VFL is certainly not worth a first round selection.

Re: Luke Ball wants to be a Pie

I can't see a trade happening then. He'll probably re-sign for 3 years and come back and improve on a disapointing season but he'll do so on a lot less money which will make some more room in salary cap.

Collingwood never land any big names in trade week because they think they can pick up big name players for chips in return.

Lovett just took his spot on your list.

Perhaps we should wait and see then.

Ball is not a "big name player". Spare us the crap please.

If he was "big name" as you say, he would never have been demoted to the VFL and given minimum game time during games. He was never treated as a "required or important player".

As I said, Ball is not even worth Davis in a straight swap and no club would offer a first round selection for Davis, despite now being an A-grade footballer and an AA.

For the Saints to be demanding a first round pick is ludacrous.

A fair and equitable trade will get done before the deadline but it won't involve a first round pick. That you can be sure of.
