Hello Bluebaggers,

How is young Marc Murphy going this year?

Obviously a great start with his Round One Rising Star nomination, but how do you guys think he has gone since then?

He's going better than we had any right to expect. Got us back into the game last week against the Swans, hitting Fev on the chest three times. Moves and decides like a gun. Would likely have been nominated for that game if not round one.

Didn't have a great night last night, but was robbed of a free in front of goal by one of the dozier orange boys. Got caught out sitting off his man once or twice, but given his class, I'm happy to see him being left unattended.

At one state last night, he picked the ball off the ground, burst out of the pack, and kicked the ball onto our leading forward's chest. That's nothing new though...

He's made that his trademark.

Murphy has been good, will be a star. As has Thomas for collingwood. I can't wait to see X Ellis running around for the hawks late 2006.
I think we'll see 3 quailty footballers over the next decade.

IIRC, Ellis can't play AFL this year because of school footy.

As for Murphy, he's impressed and am very happy we chose him. He's a smart footballer and doesn't rush; very good at hiting a leading forward.

His going along very nicely.

However if he does go quite and doesn't get his hands on the ball, I would like to see him have a go in the VFL for a week or so away from the bigger and harder bodies.

I wouldn't want to run him into the ground.

Was getting pushed off the ball a bit last night. Still needs to develop physcially but you can't fault the kid given he has set up about 10 of Fevola's 14 goals.

Absolutely, you can't fault him. You have to expect him to be pushed off the ball and not touch it for a couple of games here and there.

However, when the time comes that he needs to take a step back and get some confidence, then send him back to the Bullants for a week.

Murphy is too good and too important for the VFL.

I thought he was fantastic again last night considering he's still only playing his forth game. If he's struggling with the intensity, play him forward. He reads the ball so well and delivers to forwards better than anyone else on the team.

Hmmm... Better than the rest?

I'd say he's one of the best kicks under pressure. Still think Kouta and Stevens have him covered though.

Stevens? Not even close.

Kicking to a leading forward is not just about being a good kick, it's being a smart kick.

I know I slag Lance a fair bit but he's also very good (usually) kicking to a leading forward. Nicky Winmar was always recognised as a great kick to Lockett because of his bullet passes, Harvey though was just as good because he knew how to kick it into a players path with perfect timing. Murphy delivers the ball in the Harvey fashion.

Murhpy is going to be a very, and a I mean VERY good player. He has those traits you cannot teach.

Has far exceded the output I thought we would get from him this year. You can just see him developing into a very good player at AFL level. In a few years when he has filled out a bit more, who knows what could be in store for him and the Carlton Footy Club.

Bit harsh there JD! Whilst Stevens' kicking isn't really up there with the best in the AFL, I still think he is probably the best in the team at hitting targets.

No he used to be. He lost that mantle about four weeks ago from what I've seen.

lost that mantle 1/2way through last year actually - the main worry is that when he has made a kicking error lately it is a very bad error (ie misses the target by a fair margin).
In terms of kicking to forward targets, from carlton the top few would be (in no particular order) - lappin, murphy, whitnall, fev, houlahan. Kouta, stevens and possibly thornton used to be very good at it though seem to have lost it in recent times. Simpson/carazzo/walker have shown signs but not enough yet to be grouped in the above class

I wasn't having a go at his kicking as such - although I tend to agree with the others in that his kicking is not as good as it was - it was more a comment on how good Murphy is at it. Now I've seen him a few times I laugh at the comments I've read re his kicking ability.

Most players kick to a forward, exceptional players kick to a forwards advantage. Some of the best midfielders in the league don't have the touch I'm talking about. Murphy has it.

Thornton is probably the worst kick in the team
