MARK ‘Bomber’ Thompson has left the building.

More specifically, the under fire AFL great has left the country.

Exclusive photographs from Auckland Airport show Thompson boarding a flight to Los Angeles on Monday night after a quick stopover in the city.

The 54 year-old, who was arrested and then released without charge last week as part of a Victoria Police investigation into alleged drug trafficking, will arrive in Los Angeles at approximately 8am Melbourne time on Tuesday after a 12-hour flight.

It is unclear how long he will be in the United States for or what the purpose of his trip is.

He was pictured boarding the plane with an Essendon backpack.

At 3.35pm on Monday, Thompson took an Air New Zealand flight from Tullamarine across the ditch. While in transit at Auckland airport, it’s believed Thompson sat calmly and ate food as unsuspecting travellers strolled by.

On January 8, Foxsports.com.au broke the news that Victoria Police had raided his Port Melbourne home on the Friday before at 9.30am as part of a drug investigation which included other suspects.

The raid lasted well into the afternoon.

Thompson presented himself by appointment to police on Tuesday and was released without charge. A Victoria Police statement said a 54-year-old man was arrested, but then “released pending inquiries”.

One of the men charged with alleged drug trafficking, 28-year old Thomas Windsor, was living in the premiership-winning player and coach’s home.

31-year old Karl Holt has also been charged with allegedly trafficking a drug of dependence as part of the same investigation.

Windsor and Holt will face court in April.

Thompson denied involvement in any criminal activity in an interview with The Herald Sun.


“They just moved in, you just can’t get rid of them,” he said of the two men.

The investigations into alleged drug trafficking remains ongoing.

Thompson played in three premierships with Essendon and coached two flags at Geelong.
