N.Daicos has been bloody good this year, but I feel that Darcy Moore has been better for the pies this year.

Both are guns though and pretty handy to have in your defense.
Gee they've been fortunate with their recruiting, haven't they.

They also managed to snare Josh Daicos, the best wingman in the game according to Leigh Montagna.

Only knock on him is the low contested possession count and statpadding by high amounts of kick ins (fair enough when he is one of the best kicks in the game).

His running is insane both where he runs to and the amount of running - similar to Walsh in that regards.

He is an interesting puzzle for coaches in how they shut him down.

The Gary Ablett comparisons are hilarious, honestly.

The only thing he has in common with Gary is they are the same height, get a ton of the ball, kick it well. (And of course comes from famous lineage).

Gary was a tank, just like his old man. Sinewy.

Daicos does not have the speed or power of Ablett, which ultimately is what has made all the great midfielders of the past 20 years what they were.

There's a fair bit of "Matt Rowell" about Daicos.

Junior player who was waaay more prepared for the rigours of AFL when he came into it and as a result is playing much closer to his ceiling than the rest of his contemporaries.

If tagging ever comes back into vogue he will be one of those players like Sloane and Selwood who got held to 10 touches every time they got tagged as he is too small to shake off a physical tagger.

Is he in uncharted territory as far as his impact at this stage of his career?

Yes, absolutely.

But the eye test will clearly tell you, this kid ain't ever getting close Gary Ablett levels - a player who went into the Brownlow 4 times as the consensus favourite to win, and was robbed a further time when his shoulder blew out.

Once the honey moon period wears off, and football becomes more of a grind rather than a euphoric experience of achieving new highs every game, he will revert back to his mean, which is still a super player, but Zach Merret on steroids is not the "next Gary Ablett junior".

Not even close.
How quickly people forget how long it took junior to establish himself. They also forget his own team mates thought he was a squib for a while.

They held a meeting at one point and told him he'd never be as good as he could be unless he worked harder.

Unbelievable that the best kid since Chris Judd is a F/S for Collingwood who are a premiership contender. I think the AFL will increase the amount of draft picks/points that club needs to use to match the bid for starters they can get rid of the F/S discount
You understand that we finished 17th the year he was drafted, right?

He averages something like 3.5 kick ins per game. When you’re collecting 40 a week those become insignificant, it’s not like anyone is going to consider him a lesser player if his stat sheet read 37 and 2 goals instead of 40 and 2.

Oh and fyi, 9 contested possessions per game is what he averages, and is elite by position. When he went in to the middle in the last quarter yesterday he had 7 possessions, 4 contested. The knocks you listed are just bullshit things that people are reaching for in order to find anything they can to bring the kid down, it’s pathetic.

Dont think there are any knocks on him by position. The unknown is his ability to play against other contested mids when in the centre. I'm of the belief that Collingwood are developing him beautifully and protecting him at the same time. I expect it to be a slow transition to a full-time midfielder to ensure he has a long career and also to continually utilise his best assets (kicking/running/positioning)

I read similar on the Geelong board on Max Holmes with some thinking he is a great contested player as he showed signs when playing on the wing. My point is it's hard to say a player is a good contested player when they are only matching up on other wings/flankers and not going against the Oliver's/Dangerfield of the game.

But from a draftee perspective, it's completely unfair.
The problem is looking for fairness in the first place.

Many things in the AFL aren’t fair. Fixturing isn’t fair - heck, the Crows and Power got an extra home game this year.

And if you want to see unfair, just wait til the AFL announce the trade / draft concessions for the new Tassie Team

Love when posters drag Nick down because of his contested possessions.

That’s like focusing on Michael Jordan’s assists or rebounds number , while he’s dropping 50 points on your team.
Exactly! Don’t worry about the trolls knocking the kid. They think they have his game summed up, but he’s only played 30 games.
Nick’s a good learner and a ferocious trainer - we have not seen his final product yet.

How good is he, never seen anything like it from a second year player.

Greg Williams 2nd year :

League MVP
Geelong b&f
4th in Brownlow
675 disposals @ 30.68 per game
1985 AFL average disposals per game = 602
1985 AFL average disposals per team = 302
Geelong disposals for the season 6,811 @ 309.59 per game

Williams averaged 9.911% of Geelongs disposals over the whole season.

Nick is so far averaging 9.666% of a Collingwood's this season.

It will be good to see the comparison by seasons end.
