Quesion for any history buffs.

When was the last time the Grand Final was contested by two sides that didn't win in the first week of finals?

I thought the commentators were incredibly harsh on Rozee. Especially in a game where Grimes and Vlastuin are on the same field.
I think Vlaustin is the worst.

At least Selwood also gets the hard ball and ducks as a way of drawing high contact usually to get out of trouble.

Vlaustin has the weakest legs in football. Just a bad look from a forward sees them turn to jelly.

Lots of common tropes that aren't objectively evident.

Interesting bits:
  • A team that generates more scoring shots with poor accuracy is more likely to win than a team which has few scoring shots and better accuracy.
  • The composition of the crowd is statistically relevant, and can produce an advantage of up to 2 goals.
  • The shape, location, "spiritual home" of the ground do not produce a discernible advantage or disadvantage.
  • The affects of distance travelled on the outcome of a game are negligible and close to undetectable.
  • Having a shorter break than your opponent don't make much difference to the outcome of a game.
  • Having a much longer break than your opponent (such as coming off a bye) does make a difference to the outcome of a game.
It seems that getting people to attend away games would actually be helpful in winning more games of football.

That and never having byes. Although perhaps the positive affects of a bye are more long term, you lose the game directly after the bye but are more likely to win the games following that..? Or at least less likely to have injuries that affect the outcome of those later games.

Top 4 sides shouldn't have the ability for FA.

Lynch to Richmond
Cameron to Geelong
Daniher to Brisbane

What hope do the lower sides have to compete.
Franklin to Sydney
Danger to geelong

Saints landed a few players last year.
Melbourne has attracted players.
Brisbane got Neale.
GC have picked up players.
Carlton have attracted players as well.

IMO not a massive issue. Get your s**t in order. Players will come.

There should definitely be a rule if you finish top for you are unable to sign unrestricted/restricted free agents the following year.
I don’t overly mind if they can sign a free agent but the compensation should be worked out a bit better especially at the very top of the scale so that Buddy Franklins don’t equal pick 19, and the destination club should lose an equivalent amount of draft picks/points as well.

if you're looking to change something and actually have an impact, you'd be looking at:

(I can't find it in clear writing, but the thing about how a player's cap hit is how much salary they paid in that year, and not the average amount of the total contract)

&

21.1
(d)The parties to a Standard Playing Contract, which contract has not been terminated, may vary the terms of the contract or renew the contract for a further term/s, by written agreement of the parties.

which allows contracts to be re-written

which means any club with half a brain should be able to juggle the salary cap. geelong have probably had their eyes on Cameron for about 3 years and planned for this. the problem is that the salary cap doesn't actually seem to force players out of clubs. the buddy franklin contract, for all the cola whinging, was the one time a team signed a star and had to lose a star as a direct consequence (mumford)

Free Agency is becoming a real farce, along with the academies. The competition is incredibly compromised right now.

The top sides are effectively topping up each year to stay on top with FA’s, or plucking top tier talent via academies, whilst mid tier sides are pushed down in the draft through not having any access to players that should be available.

Geelong have managed their salary cap exceptionally well to allow it to happen, but when you’ve had Lynch and Cameron as two of the best forwards in the comp, able to walk straight in to a Top-4 side, it’s a farce.

You never see a high quality FA go to a bottom side because this isn’t the NBA where one single good player can transform a side, let alone two.

Academies are a joke look at Gold Coast

Not to mention we benefited.

You're right, free agency is fine.

All of those clubs became top 4 before the free agents joined.
