Port Adelaide are a club that doesn't know who they are or where they wanna be. They cling onto a history that means nothing in the one they actually now play in. They are Port Power and have been in existence since 1997. All that SA history is in the past and a SANFL thing. So, i prefer the Crows, but they are both the opposition and i don't like any opposing team! I only have a soft spot for the Bombers because i grew up there and played in the EDFL, the rest of them can take a running jump!
Yeah I agree.
The Crows went through a similar period.
When they first came in they were basically the state side. Played like they were SA against the rest.
They had a high % of SA players which gave them that state culture.
A number of years ago they kind of walked that back and ended up drafting more Vic kids than SA ones and didn't preference them above anyone else.
We lost our soul and it cost us.

The club has moved back into the old state pride thing, and has preferred to get good SA talent, either in the draft or in trading, and we now have a team with a backbone of SA player, and alot of those were rabid Crows supporters growing up.
Rankine, Dawson, Michaelanny, Thillthorpe, Fogarty, Draper etc.
There are two benefits to this. One, they stay at home, and play in front of their family and friends.
And the most undervalued one is that we don't have to fight against Victorian teams throwing huge offers at them to go home.
Take Thilthorpe. He is easily a 1.7-2 million a year player on a 7 year contract. I can guarantee you he isnt on anything like that at the Crows. He re-signed before his contract was up, didn't bother to test the market, and just wants to play for the Crows.
He used to sit on the couch with his grandmother watching the Crows together, and she was an absolute diehard Crows supporter. For him to play for the Crows and have his Grandmother just as proud as can be (not sure if she is still kicking or not, hope she is) means more to him than another 700k a year.
Izak Rankine the same.
This is a major benefit for us, as historically we have lost alot of good young players due to big offers from other clubs when they didn't have any emotional connection with the club.
Charlie Cameron, Jake Lever, Patrick Dangerfield, Mitch McGovern etc.
The other thing the club did well was to draft best friends in Rachele and Soligo. They both signed long term contract without testing the market as they want to play their careers together at the same club.

I prefer Port for a few reasons
I lived for about 15 years in a neighbouring suburb, Semophore. In 2010 when Richmond beat Port in about round 10 for Hardwick’s first win as a Coach, so many of them came up to me and congratulated my team. Of course they were spewing it was against them. Really good sports.

When I got home the day after the 2017 grand final, it was to a hero’s welcome. Gifts of top shelf scotch etc. You’d reckon I’d kicked the winning goal. I felt impelled to inform them that I really played no part in the game at all apart from attending. Didn’t seem to change their attitude.
They really hate the Crows.
The presents were stolen though

But it wasn’t. The Port Adelaide football club joined the AFL. They were told they cannot use the magpie name so they used the Power name.
They made a mistake continuing in the SANFL but it was all the sane club.
There is nothing confusing about it at all.
It wasn't the same club. They were two separate identities, Port Magpies moved to another ground, they wernt allowed to share resources and had to be 100% separate. This what Port agreed to to get the AFL licence.
Now they are the same entity.

Port are realising this fact also buy the biggest concern for both SA clubs is the SANFL and the lack of investment in ground roots and junior football.

SA has fallen behind Queensland with junior participation rates. The talent pool will thin out pretty quickly if the AFL and the clubs don't address this issue.

Meanwhile the SANFL only cares about maintaining their state league over being a feeder league into the AFL.

100%, only you missed the 3rd and I believe most important benefit.
That in not taking Vic kids you dont waste valuable time and money developing them only to have them use it against you when they eventually go home and in doing so you starve Vic clubs of top up talent they need for quick rejuvenation.

Still have anxiety attacks over the 98 grand final. I mean 1.11 in the second qtr and going into half time only 24 ahead, should have been 54 and game over. We ended up kicking 2.18 at the city end of the ground ffs. Every time I watch Adelaide I think of that grand final **** up without fail. So it’s Port for me even though they’ve had their fair share of w***er types over the years like Treadrea, JHF, Cornes etc.

Living in Adelaide I have a soft spot for the Power due to the absolute ball licking the Crows get from the local media all the time.
Fourteen page lift out in the paper for beating Essendon in a practice match if memory doesn't fail me.

Dont get dragged down to that level of stupidity, they'll beat you with experience.

The reality is, Port Adelaide we're welcomed into the AFL because we were deemed worthy of a place in the competition.
We werent cobbled together out of spite or designed to expand into new markets.

We're a real club with real history that were too good for our State league and have gone on to hold our own against the best.
That we've won as many flags in St Kilda's league in 28yrs as St Kilda have in 152yrs is a bonus.
Was the inaugural Port list composed of the SANFL team list, more or less?

I froth both teams

Butters, Rozee, JHF - super fun to watch

Rankine might be my favourite player, Dawson is a star and Thilthorpe is like Harry McKay but angry and can kick straight

SA has fallen behind Queensland with junior participation rates. The talent pool will thin out pretty quickly if the AFL and the clubs don't address this issue.

Meanwhile the SANFL only cares about maintaining their state league over being a feeder league into the AFL.
And WA has fallen even further behind both SA and Vic. SA produces just slightly less kids per capita than Vic does, but WA produces alot less then either of them. The AFL needs to stop acting as a Victorian organisation and fund SA and WA to the same extent they do Vic.

I have some sympathy for the SANFL clubs. They spend their time and resources to develop kids, and the best ones will never play for them. If that wasn't enough the AFL then introduces a mid season draft where they are then pillaged again of their best players half way through their own seasons. That is such a arrogant thing for them to do. The SANFL clubs sign these guys up to contracts and halfway through the year they get drafted and they walk into the clubs and want to cancel their contracts for s shot at the AFL.
The AFL needs to do the right thing and increase the list spots on all clubs lists by and additional 4 to 5 spots, and then if a club needs an extra player halfway through the year that's on them for poor list management, not on the SANFL clubs to wear.

PAFC wanted to join the AFL. They did and changed their nickname to Power. SANFL wanted to keep a Port going in the SANFL so they created a new entity called PAMFC located out a Ethelton but played games at Alberton. Then with all the confusion between supporters they merged the two clubs in 2010. by 2014 they became an afl reserves side.
