Yeah I agree.Port Adelaide are a club that doesn't know who they are or where they wanna be. They cling onto a history that means nothing in the one they actually now play in. They are Port Power and have been in existence since 1997. All that SA history is in the past and a SANFL thing. So, i prefer the Crows, but they are both the opposition and i don't like any opposing team! I only have a soft spot for the Bombers because i grew up there and played in the EDFL, the rest of them can take a running jump!
The Crows went through a similar period.
When they first came in they were basically the state side. Played like they were SA against the rest.
They had a high % of SA players which gave them that state culture.
A number of years ago they kind of walked that back and ended up drafting more Vic kids than SA ones and didn't preference them above anyone else.
We lost our soul and it cost us.
The club has moved back into the old state pride thing, and has preferred to get good SA talent, either in the draft or in trading, and we now have a team with a backbone of SA player, and alot of those were rabid Crows supporters growing up.
Rankine, Dawson, Michaelanny, Thillthorpe, Fogarty, Draper etc.
There are two benefits to this. One, they stay at home, and play in front of their family and friends.
And the most undervalued one is that we don't have to fight against Victorian teams throwing huge offers at them to go home.
Take Thilthorpe. He is easily a 1.7-2 million a year player on a 7 year contract. I can guarantee you he isnt on anything like that at the Crows. He re-signed before his contract was up, didn't bother to test the market, and just wants to play for the Crows.
He used to sit on the couch with his grandmother watching the Crows together, and she was an absolute diehard Crows supporter. For him to play for the Crows and have his Grandmother just as proud as can be (not sure if she is still kicking or not, hope she is) means more to him than another 700k a year.
Izak Rankine the same.
This is a major benefit for us, as historically we have lost alot of good young players due to big offers from other clubs when they didn't have any emotional connection with the club.
Charlie Cameron, Jake Lever, Patrick Dangerfield, Mitch McGovern etc.
The other thing the club did well was to draft best friends in Rachele and Soligo. They both signed long term contract without testing the market as they want to play their careers together at the same club.
