O'Meara vs. Clark

Marketing (he is a giant after all), leadership and some protection at the stoppages for their kids while they develop.

getting sandilands just for leadership and protection around stoppages is a severe waste. they could get that from griffin or other cheaper / options. they would have to be very worried about attendance if they felt they needed sandilands for marketing.

Time to make the big call and trade Sandi

sandi to GWS for pick 7 and Jaeger
pick 7 for the best key forward in the draft (Pav clone)
pick 16 for Clark
pick 32 draft/trade for a specialist back pocket

play Griff and Clarke as our rucks
play Clark and Pav as our key forwards

this way Fremantle can have a crack at the flag in the next 2 to 3 years with Pav and by then hopefully our pick 7 key forward is ready to take over from the legend opening up another tilt at a flag

GWS have said they don't want a ruck over 26.

We'll never get O'Meara with just picks as GC will always be able to top us. So if we want O'Meara we have to suck it up and trade players who are good.

I think we'll need to trade one Mayne or (more likely) Clarke + our compo pick to even be a chance. Morabito or Ballas would be the other ones for a straight swap but I hate the idea of getting rid of either.

Good news is O'Meara's probably worth it + we can still use pick 16 on Clark (which I personally think is overpaying.)

Take Clark now, not a massive fan but its gonna happen..

Tell O'meara we really want him, and make a massive play for him after his two year contract with whoever wins the race for him.
Probably work out cheaper than getting in a bidding war, plus he won't be on our list unable to play next season.

Can see us getting both tbh.

1st round for Clark. Some crumbs aswell if need be.

Compo pick for JOM, with plenty of steak knives at hand i.e. Griffin pick, Duffield, Crowley, some other spud who plays well on paper at selection meetings, 2nd rounder etc.

Plenty of ammunition to take a pop at both guys.

Isn't Clark out of contract?
If so, do we need to give Brisbane anything for him or take him in the preseason draft?
If we have to trade for him, then do a collingwood/Tarrant deal and give up a thrid round pick for him, take it or leave it!:thumbsu:

the problem with saying "just get him in the PSD" though is that any other club could pick him up. port adelaide, gold coast, GWS, richmond, melbourne would all have strong interests.... and saying "just put him out of their price range" doesnt work either, because both GWS and GC17 have a much higher cap than us, as well as the fact that we would end up paying him much more than he is worth... no, we will have to offer something of some value in return

Yeah, I don't think the PSD is going to happen. It's only really happened once with Nick Stevens and that would have been because Chocco is a ********.

Disagree KPR. As Nickos pointed out only about 6-7 clubs usually participate in the PSD and on top of that Clark's manager has emphatically ruled out GWS (on more than one occasion) and has stipulated Fremantle (who they tried to deal with this time last year).

Plus, no club wants to pay $400-$600k a year for a player who would happily bide his time in the ressies till his contract expired.

all of the clubs below us will get in on the PSD. i think GC and GWS would be prepared to take him even if only for one year, as he will be a trade asset the next year, and unless clark is prepared to miss a whole year out of the afl in his prime, there is nothing he or anyone else can do about it. he is currently living in qld, if an appropriate trade couldnt be worked out between us and brisbane, im sure GC will be in his ear saying that they can offer him good money, the relocation will be seamless, they need a key forward, why not sign a deal with them... and if it came to that i reckon he'd accept... at worst he will be getting more money than what we can give him and would only have to move down the road to the most talented list in the country

Possible, but I think it's a long, long shot. On top of that I think Clark can easily upend that strategy by stipulating a 2 year contract were he to go into the PSD (which, iirc, is the minimum term), and no club is going to jeopardise their chances in next year's super draft by having a surly list clogger on their list.

You carry a contract into the PSD, if Clark's stipulates that he will be based in Perth in 2012 there won't be another team picking him before us.

If they do, it'll be because they'd budgeted almost a million dollars for their "Stuff you Mitch Clark and stuff you Fremantle" fund.

Being so far removed for almost every other club is one of the very few advantages we get in the AFL system, I hope we use it.

Exactly.

We get screwed in the go home factor so much, be noce to actually get one back.

If Brissy want to re-sign him in the PSD, I;d have no qualms.

Lump our second rounder on the table and be done with it.
He's not Jonathan Brown.

I doubt any clubs would want to go down that road with FA around the corner. It's not really the wisest time to make a douche of yourself in the eyes of the players.

Exactly how I feel guys pick 38!!!

I wasn't aware this was possible. If so then offer round 3 pick or give them nothing, and let him go into the PSD.
I'm really not sure this is possible though.

As the young girl in that Ole de Paso said: 'per che no la dos!'

Grab Clark this year and get in JOM in the draft after he picks up a 'mysterious' illness causing him to miss the draft camp.

I'm liking the Clark option now as a quick fix for the lacking key forward and with bigger body can provide protection to our smaller players. See: McPhee

They weren't really forced into it through one sided trade negotiations though.

thats true of mcphee.. the reason why the bombers were so annoyed is that he didnt give them a chance to trade him. houli was similar though, right up to till the end of trade week they were trying to convince him to stay, and then richmond refused to offer anything on th elast day i believe so that they could pick him up in the psd

It's interesting to hear you freo supporters trying to give nothing really to get Clark. Take mind he usually had the best defender on him, poor midfield delivery (think Raines) wanted out last year anyway. There is alot of upside to him and would be a good fit and most probably get you a few more wins next year.

When it comes to O'Meara you just have to be a bit smarter about what you think you could give to get him. I don't see how drafting Clark would impact on your chances to get O'Meara. If anything you should be happy that you have some currency to use. Every cjub would love him especially the lions but what would we offer, Fev, X.Clark, Power, Proud and a set of steak knives.
