News Pick trade - future first for 23 and future second

Jones counts as a first round pick.
.....
Even in the 2024 trade period we would still meet the criteria for two first round picks in the four national drafts prior to the current trade period.
Jones was the initial error I made.

In 2024 we have to use a 1st round pick either ours or one traded in. If we trade one in, only then can we trade out F1 2025.

See the table I did in previous post.

Geelong doesn't exactly marry up with us. From 2015 to 2019 they only used one first round draft pick (Clarke in 2018).

2015 - traded Pick 9 for Dangerfield, traded out F1 2016 for Henderson
2016 - no first round pick, traded out F1 2017 for Tuohy
2017 - no first round pick
2018 - selected Clarke with Pick 15

So when it came to 2019, the previous four years they hadn't met the criteria of two first round picks in the previous four years, meaning they weren't allowed to trade their future first for 2020 unless they got an extra pick in for 2019.

Whereas our strategy goes like this:

2020 - drafted Jones with bid
2021 - drafted Sinn
2022 - traded Pick 10 and F1 2023 for Horne Francis
2023 - no first round pick, traded out F1 2023

If you're looking for equivalence, imagine Dangerfield cost Pick 9 and Geelong's 2016 F1 (instead of them getting Henderson). That's the equivalent of our trade for Horne-Francis.
Then imagine we've just traded out F1 2017 for Tuohy, except it's Ratugolea.

So we're at the point that Geelong was in 2016, not the point they were at in 2019.

The difference with the Geelong situation is that they had a transition period to when the rule became hard and fast.

It means we have to use a 1st Rd pick in 2025.

No. As Duckimus Prime correctly pointed out we haven't breached any rule and we can still trade away 2024 F1 in 2023. We can't trade 2025 F1 in 2024, unless we get another 2024 1st Rd pick in before trading away 2025 F1.
Ah ok, I read your post wrong. I thought you were saying that in 2024, we'd need to trade back in a first to make up for the last 4 year window, I didn't see any note about 2025. Fair enough about 2025, that'd make sense, if you were talking about 2024 then there's nothing the AFL can do about forcing us to select one in 2024 now though. They approved the trade, so it's done.

So my understanding was that with no first rounders in 2023 and 2022, plus we've now traded out 2024, we've put ourselves in a breach position, because 2021 we took 1. So my understanding is they must've already given us a dispensation for JHF to allow the 2024 1st rounder to have been traded. Because as you point out, any trade out of our future first that put us into breach would've needed to include another first coming back within a 4 year window.

Would be funny if we were holding this pick in case Sydney can't satisfy Melbourne's demands for Grundy.
