I have been thinking about our plight to reach the pinnacle of winning a flag or flags especially since we have fallen short the last 2 years.

Circumstances and injuries have added to our woes.

We are in the midst of signing our 3 most important players in Grundy,Degoey and Moore. We must sign all three very soon no if's or buts.

These guys along with Treloar ,Adams, Crisp,Maynard and the likes of Beams, Sidey and of course Pendles and,Howe are our core group.Remembering that the last few mentioned are getting older and we have the likes of our younger brigade coming through. This is the group that really need to lift for us to have sustained success.Players like Sier, Daicos, Murphy,The brown Brothers, kelly etc is where a huge improvement must come from.

I don't know what it is , but i have had this nagging feeling that if we can just win a flag with this group and the flood gates will completely open up.

Gees if the Tigers can win 2 flags in three years,we stopped them from winning 3 in a row (because if they played the Eagles they would have beaten them i believe),surely this current group we have can win multiple flags,no doubt.

Your thoughts ????

But I like your post and positive attitude .

Those adjustments you need to make for your next opponent.. particularly in finals.. that's what Buckley lacks.

Instructing the players to 'live in the moment'.. rather than follow some ridiculous protocol.. only to realise.. oh well f.. we've got 1 qrt left to 'live in the moment'.. too late.. Williams.. a makeshift midfielder.. did his job well.. coveted himself in glory in front of a parochial Collingwood crowd.

Onya Bucks.

I know nothing but my gut tells me the opposite of the op. We are in with a chance next year at best but luck, a solid if not exceptional year from the core, a step up from DG/Moore and at least a 2018 year from Cox are required.

Beyond that .. if we lose either DG or Moore we will need an equivalent replacement, unexpected longevity from the core and unexpected development from our youth. I'm not holding my breath. I don't see elite talent below Stephenson, we will need a real injection of talent post 2021 when Sidey, Pendles and Beams are unlikely to have the same level of impact.

I am not so sure we stopped Richmond last year, injuries helped us bigtime.

The next two years are our optimum time to win the flag. Pressure will build if we can’t get it done in 2020.

I have lower expectations, but not as low as some. Our list still has too many clear holes to be considered a dominant team that can expect multiple flags. We should be good enough to stay around the top 4 over the next few years, and could swing a flag on the back of good form/luck, but could improve those chances with improving aspects our list.

Injuries helped us? You realise that Richmond was close to full strength while we were missing pretty much all our key defenders right? Oh and Dusty has a bruised leg. Give our guys some credit ffs.

Dusty was a shadow of what he'd been. Their whole team was a bit off. Noting that does not take away from our team. We jumped them from the first bounce and were magnificent. We played our best game for the year, we were damn good and they played a stinker. They had our measure earlier in the year though it does appear we match up well against them. I call it as I see it, keep your hat on. Winning finals and premierships has an element of luck, it went our way a fair bit last year. I'm just not inclined to judge where we are at as a team based on that highpoint.

I think our list is approaching the cliff perilously. But concerned about two years time when Pendles/Sidebottom/Beams/Roughead/Howe etc are all two years older and nearing the end. Our mid rangers are average footballers who we won’t expect much more out of. Save for our four youngish superstars there’s not a great deal to be super optimistic about.

Our middle part of the season was abysmal. It could very quickly become the norm

Earl Grey? If it was English Breakfast I suspect your reading to be true. If it was some hippie herbal concoction then you are in the wrong thread.

black and gold or maybe an aldi brand..... anyway, it's supposed to be kamahl's favourite brand. The chinese company that makes it says it's guaranteed to give a truthful reading. And it said 10 premierships in a row....

The Chinese promise you the world mate and build an island when you are not looking. Stick to Twinnings English Breakfast and a tea strainer.

I don't really agree with that view - I think overall our list is in the right age bracket, with plenty of our best 22, and potential/already elite guys in the 26 and under range, and that should improve over time.

Of our aging guys, only Pendles and Sidebottom are particularly difficult/impossible (Pendles) to replace IMO - but hopefully by then someone like JDG has turned into a true midfield gun, and our other young mids have improved, to try to cover those losses.

But everyone else? A lot of them are current best 22 players - but could easily be replaced/improved upon with good list management and development.

Beams played 9 games this year, and was far from his best. Time will tell whether he is still the elite player we paid for - coz that's not what we have got so far. Howe is still elite, but a healthy Langdon provides a similar role. Roughhead was a cheap stop-gap, replacing another cheap stop-gap. Not difficult to foresee finding another stop-gap, whilst hoping someone like Kelly develops. (Though I am still in the boat of playing Shaz as our 2nd pseudo-big, against everyone but Richmond and WCE). Cox/Reid will need replacing up forward - but are either truly best 22 players? Then you have Greenwood/Mayne/Varcoe who all play their roles, but many arguements about their positions in the squad and shouldn't be difficult to replace.

Clearly there will be positions that need filling - but with the right development and recruitment we should be able to find improvements for a lot of those guys.

For the most part of this thread it has mainly been list based, the age of Pendles, lack of Key forwards and the if and when our next stars are going to click.

To be honest I don't rate our list is that good, I'd say it's barely top 4 (and yes that's bloody good but not wc or giants good) - system has got us there. Particularly last year we had system that all opposition feared and didn't want to play.

If the op was based purely on talent then no, if the op was based on talent, good development, culture, coaching and truckload of sustained luck like we've never had ever then yeah it's possible.

I'm going to admit I'm a little pessimistic about our current window, while it's still there the other 3 or 4 teams are going further into the distance and have a leg already through that window - we're still a step or two away on the front lawn and they may shut it on us.

Sigh - what could've been.

Sustained success like the hawks, cats or tigs of late? - nah, even if we give ourselves that chance sure enough we'll blow it.

We've got one year to win a flag 2020 (two at best) before we need to go back down the ladder to rebuild. We put a lot of eggs in the basket of this window and we have been unlucky. It is grim if we miss out this coming year, as we will turn over a lot of our key players over the next three years, or at the very least their performance will decline (Pendles, Howe, Sidebottom, Beams, Rough, Cox, etc). The lower group aren't coming along well enough outside of 5-6 good to very good players.

I read my tea leaves this morning and if we win the flag in 2020, we win every flag for the next 10 years. Thoughts? Impressions?

I'd heard rumours that there were people out there dosing their morning "tea" with powdered psilocybin mushrooms but you just never think it'd be anyone you know....

I'd heard it was that he has 1 of the best rock albums of all time. Must vary depending on the province of origin.

It's been said many times . . .

BUT . . .

Injuries have cruelled us in the last 2 years - we made the GF/PF IN SPITE OF injuries.

Some of those injuries have been self inflicted and worsened - IMHO - by the deplorable state of our training ground which everyone at the club is in pointless denial over.

A complete changeover of training/fitness staff has occurred, and the huge upsurge of injuries roughly coincide with changing training facilities.

Not rocket science.

FIX THE DAMN TRAINING SURFACE!

It's not that hard - although pricey

It's time Eddie and the board stopped penny pinching over the stupid AFL tax . .

FIX THE GROUND

HIRE FULL TIME SPECIALIST COACHES.

Win flag/s.

Some very good posts guys.

If only we can get a FULL side on the park week in and week out playing together knowing the team structures and most importantly have a relatively full side playing together come finals time we are a big chance.

Tigers had injuries this year but managed to field a full side minus Rance and they know their game plan well and won the flag easily......But then again do you all think that they would have won the Flag without Lynch .He was a huge factor......then again maybe not.Lynch got them over the line against Geelong, remember Geelong were missing Hawkins (big out).plus Plus lynch got the tigers over the line many times half way through the season when Reiwoldt was out.Let's not forget Lynch was a huge part of their successful season this year.

There is no magic fungi in my tea... The leaves are predestined by the gods. I also consult with the spatter marks on the china after the morning constitutional and it also confirms a period of sustained success. oh ye of little faith..
