Sorry but to call a major press conference to say "Nothing Changes" is an absolute joke, he could have released a media statement yesterday to this effect.

The only reason you could justify this joke of a press conference was at 10pm last night he had retired, then Clarke or someone else has talked him out of it after a good nights sleep.

On form he should be going to the West Indies, and with Australia's batting depth I think it is an ok move, but to call a press conference about it is just ridiculous.

did he need a press conference to tell us this

Every journalist in about 4 countries was going to be asking him questions, why not call a PC and do it all at once?

lol that's exactly what I am thinking, pwned the media who were probably ready with the headlines :D

Anyways I still think that this summer was his best opportunity to go out on a high personally, but yet happy that he's still around. Always been an absolute delight to watch him bat.

Tassie would have a big smile on their face now. Would think he will play in some crucial upcoming games for them, not a bad player to be slotting into an already strong state team:eek:

No. If you are considering dropping someone then you don't make them captain.

You make it sound like they gave him back the position permanently and then dropped him, which is ridicoulous. He was captain in those games because he was the bestan for the job. Clarke was injured, watto injured, Warner has played 20 sub par ofi's. Punter captained the side for 8ish years, won two world cups and been no 1 for his entire captaincy career.

It sucks that it's so sudden, I guess he was clogging up a spot with watto to come back into the side.....

Because a press release does the exact same thing;)

Farewell games don't work. If he wanted a farewell game he should have taken the decision to retire like Warne, McGrath, Gilly, Langer etc., if he wanted the selectors to make the decision then that's it, when the axe falls it falls, no farwell games, no chance to acknowledge the crowds. He should have annoucnced it was his last summer before the tests, could have done a great farewell tour in the test series.

As it is now, he'll be lucky to get the Windies, then it's all over. Hung on for 6 more months and probably $500k, fair call to him but that was his choice.

I concur with this.

62, 78, 5, 16, 62, 60, 134, 7, 221, 60*.

Yep, will be lucky to get to the Windies.

Last 10 innings he's scored 2 tons and 5 fifties. He's so clearly done.

Ahhh so he played well against a terrible Indian team, is going to play a shield match or two in the meantime, will go to the Windies no doubt, unless he bombs at state level, but do you really see him playing in the Ashes?

Also if Forest keeps scoring runs in the ODI's, Watson back and fit, may very well find the Windies are a huge maybe...

If he keeps up the form above, which I think he will (but obviously not that dominant), why the heck not?

You think he will? So you are discounting his performance over the last 2 years? his terrible ODI form this summer? All becuase he scored some runs against a terrible Indian team?

I respect Ponting for what he's done but he's obviously rapidly falling off a cliff, will get slaughtered if we take him into the Ashes (which are still over a year away). The English quicks will have a field day against him with the pace and movement they generate.

There is a train of thought (mostly from Indian supporters it must be said) that Ponting's "resurgence" can't be taken too seriously, given the sheer ineptitude of India. Obviously you can only score runs against what is put in front of you, but I'm sure the selectors would be wary of Punter coming crashing back down against England or South Africa at a highly inopportune time such as in the middle of an Ashes series.

The worst case scenario would be a string of failures in the Ashes, forcing us to play a young/inexperienced batsman at the top of the order. Form can be very fickle at the best of times, let alone when you're 38. Don't get me wrong, the man is an all time great and one of my favourite cricketers, and having a firing Ponting in your top order is a huge weapon, but foresight is needed. Hopefully his current test form sticks considering the cupboard is pretty bare for batsmen at the moment!

If the indian team were so bad how come Marsh, Cowan and Haddin didn't exactly fill their boots? Clarke had a big series, Punter had a big series and Warner played one good knock.

Marsh couldn't have made runs against an under 12s side with the form he was in. Haddin the same. Cowan was ok, took a bit of time to adjust to the step up.

I never said I subscribed to those opinions btw, I think it undervalues his performances. My main point was that caution should be used when assessing Ponting. He had an excellent series, yes, but at his age that form can just as quickly disappear. We shouldn't just assume that the old Ponting is back and will carry us right through to the Ashes in 2013.
