How's our forward line in the 1996 Grand Final? Hodges, Smith, Tredrea. Ridiculously blessed we were.

... was a handy few players there? :D

Just a bit of info on Les 'Bro' Dayman from Full Points Footy.

Link

Powerful overhead, and abundantly skilled, he won Port Adelaide's best and fairest award on three occasions and topped the club's goal kicking four times.* He was the league's top goal kicker in 1929 with 86 goals, and was a near automatic choice for South Australia for much of his time in that state, playing a total of 19 interstate matches and booting 30 goals.

Dayman played 165 games from 1921-31 and also played played 3 seasons at Footscray 1932-34 and returned to Port for 1 game in 1937 after a couple of seasons at Coburg in the VFL.

Tom Garland played 136 games and kicked 86 goals for Port between 1952 and 1958 amd lead the Magpies' goal kicking in 1954 with 44 goals. Garland was named at CHF in the premiership teams in 1955-58. He could also ruck to great effect.

footyhead07 in a discussion on the SANFL Board brought up the classic game against Sturt at Unley Round 6 on 10 May 1980 where Dave Granger played one of the great CHF games.

He kicked 5 goals and dominated up forward for Port against Gary Hardeman who was a true VFL star who came to play in SA while still at his peak. It was a memorable performance.

Unley was an opposition CHF graveyard because of its size so it was an even more illustrious performance.

Port lost by 4 points that day 14.12 to Sturt's 13.22, one of two losses in a year where Port swept all before them to a premiership, leading goalkicker and Magarey Medal trifecta.

And yet again the aforementioned in the ruck discussion thread Ian Hannaford has to rate in the top 5.

Gotta love Smithy. 343 games, 456 goals, 7 time Premiership player, State player, 2 time leading goalkicker.

People think the vitriol towards Pettigrew is over the top but this guy copped it for years, despite being a bloody good player. Capable of the idiotic mistake but the thing I liked about Smithy was he always gave a contest. He would either take a mark on a long searching lead and either dish off a lightning quick handball before his feet had touched the ground, or he'd turn on a 5c piece and get it long into the forward line. If he didnt mark, he'd always make sure the ball was in front for the crumbers.

Great footballer.

Could also probably mention Hynesy here as well.

As for Paul Stringer....

Cornesy is lucky Granger missed otherwise he'd still be eating through a straw.

Dave Granger was an amazing player at CHF. Putting aside all the controversy of who he belted over the years, he could dominate in arguably the toughest position on the ground at 185cm and 87kg. Jasper Pittard is taller than that. Matthew Broadbent is around that size.

And aside from his football talent he played that position harder than anyone and with one of the toughest jobs. He kept the forward line open for Tim Evans so had to drag players upfield and copped a battering himself from defenders in an era when punching from behind included the head, arms and hands.

There's no doubt Dave extracted a terrible price on the opposition but he wore his lumps too. And when you had a reputation back then someone was always looking to get you.

One thing about Cahill was he made the key positions about the most stable in the team. I can remember only a few genuine key forwards under Cahill. He found guys that could play CHF/FF and he left them there.

Granger from 1977-82, Darren Smith 1988-96. And Macca is spot on about Smithy. Much maligned even by Port supporters but a true Port Adelaide champion. As Jack said about him he might not have been the type to crash in and knock players over but he was fearless as a footballer.

Prior to becoming a goal machine full forward Randall Gerlach looked like he could be a gun CHF. Probably had the strongest hands of any Port key forward of the era.

I've seen a few blokes bob up in the CHF spot briefly while Cahill tried to find the right player but none lasted long. Jon Evans, Zane Separovich, Kym Curtis (played in the 1979 premiership while Dave was at St Kilda), even Russell Ebert, Peter Woite, Milan Faletic, Greg Phillips and Trevor Sorrell had stints there.

Dwayne Russell was underrated. He was another of the 185cm key forwards but a big strong guy with huge thighs that could propel him over and through packs. He was a great talent maybe never quite reached his potential but played some huge games for Port before leaving for Geelong.

Back in the Fos Williams past, Reg Beaufoy, Eric Freeman and Peter Obst all played up there and won premierships.

Pardon me Mr mod but I think he kicked 6 that day.....

God love him.

I was thinking 5 or 7. I should've split the difference. ;)

As discussed previously that day will forever remain etched in my memory.

Barracking hard and loud all day from the relative safety of next to the cheer squad to riding a train up into the hills surrounded by double blue. I am positive if I was with one of my brothers and not one of my sisters we would have copped a hiding.

Second best CHF in the great and proud history of the Port Adelaide Football Club after Tredders was our mate Dave.

For some reason the one piece of commentary that sticks in my mind from the 80's is 'Dwayne Russell - could kick start a Boeing 747'. I think they must have got a discount from Qantas each time they said it, or possibly it just runs through my brain every time I hear HIM commentate now.
