AFLW Port Adelaide vs GWS - Round 10 @ Alberton

Looked so competitive in the first game against Adelaide, then injuries and suspensions robbed us of momentum (plus Ewings going backwards) and the season fell apart with close losses. Sadly too much unwatchable football hurt us.

Hoping for a big finish to the season at home and some clear headed decision making on and off field.

The cold hard fact is that we have access to the smallest talent pool of any team with limited ability to attract established talent. It's going to take a long, long time to get this thing off the ground (you can thank our amazing board and management team for that, by the way).

Imagine if you started the AFL competition today and slowly introduced teams over the years. Imagine if we were the last team introduced. Imagine if we were then asked to build our list from scratch and the only way to build the list was to a) take young and raw SA players from the draft, b) take rejects that none of the other 17 clubs wanted and c) use a relatively small salary cap to attract a handful of players from other teams who happened to be Port supporters and have a connection to the club (Phillips, Saint, Houghton). It would be a complete disaster and you wouldn't hold out much hope of it improving quickly.

I'm sure we can do better than we've been doing but until this competition turns fully professional and the draft becomes a national based one we are effectively operating with both hands tied behind our backs.

Need to nail our off-season recruiting, at least one tall defender would be handy. The good teams all seem to have at least a couple of big strong mobile talls working around the ground.

I still think the Adelaide game showed signs of progress but injury and suspension and lack of depth hurt us, as it would such a new team. Scholz and Saint were strong additions but we didn't add a real immediate game breaker. Scholz should be a star though.

We need midfielders. None of our midfielders would get a game at any of the top teams. Dowrick is the only half decent one we have and even she is blue collar.

We won't get any though because there's no reason for anyone to come play for us unless they have no other option.

A reasonable expectation would have been to perform better in our 2nd season than our 1st.

That hasnt happened and its pretty clear our coach and BnF winner (for starters) aren't taking it seriously enough.

Definitely and as I said Ewings' regression hurt us. But we are punching way above our weight (height) in defence and get easily scored on with spillages out the back.

You can see a running game plan trying to break out, but our ball handling - often in the possession before F50 entry - is often fumbled and the good play breaks down. Katelyn Pope has great pace and tenacity but can only kick 15m, Yas Duursma is athletic but every kick seems to be smothered or misdirected.

All you can do is persist with recruiting with whatever options we have.

I've only watched the girls play a few times this season. The win against the Saints & the loses against WC & SYD, games I'd thought we'd win.

Not sure we can beat GWS, so let's hope the Norf girls do the job on the Bulldogs in the game prior.

The club is half a win away from getting our first spoon in 123 years. Not acceptable!!

We’re favourites to win this 😮

GWS are a better team than us but given they're missing Alyce Parker (their best player) and it's at Alberton there's probably the thought that we're a chance. But still, 2 wins from 19 doesn't inspire too much confidence lol.

We beat GWS in the pre-season as we did St Kilda, who we then beat in Round 3.

Omen??

All good reasons why we should have gone with an experienced coach and if you haven’t got the ability even more reason to set higher standards with fitness etc.

I reckon we should send someone out to Ireland and sign a group of Irish girls for next season. There are so many Irish girls in this league and most of them do very well. Good athletes, good ball skills. This is an area we seem to have no desire to explore in either competition due to one bad experience a decade ago.

We have 4 academy girls who are high in the Draft Central power rankings including the top 2 in the 2024 Draft (Young and Goody). We can pre list 3. We just have to convince them to sign on.

Young is the girl who won the Margery Medal at 16 yo and Goody is her only rival for #1 in an open draft. We didn’t use any of our sign on concessions last season because we were waiting for these girls.

With Scholz an absolute star and Dorwick and Ewings- we are a handful of seasons away from a tilt at the title.

Patience.

With Erin playing her last game, there’s absolutely no excuse. We should not be losing this game under any circumstance!
Lets see if the W team have inherited the Hinkley FC culture of shitting the bed in tribute games

Maybe I e missed the conversation but Ewings going backwards has to have something to do with the condition she showed up in at the preseason. She didn’t look fit.

Ewings could've gotten herself fitter in half the season but didn't. An attitude problem on her behalf. However she was allowed to play and only given the ol Hinkley one game omission, so we also have a latitude problem too at the club.

Missed the two games.
