Crows call off practice match
By ANDREW CAPEL

ADELAIDE has cancelled the practice match it had scheduled for Port Augusta tomorrow.
The Crows last night made the shock announcement after weighing up the heavy training workload their players had undertaken in the past month.
Instead they will have a second training session in Port Augusta which will incorporate some competitive work. "The players have had a really heavy workload since returning from the (Christmas) break and while we don't want to be too conservative we want to keep as many of them on the track as possible," Adelaide coach Neil Craig said.
"It's a fine balancing act but we just thought the risk of injury, given their recent workload, was just too much. The intention all along was to use this week as recovery and we don't want to jeopardise that."
It had been expected six of the Crows new players would have had their first semi-serious hit-out of 2005 at Port Augusta's Central Oval.
First-year players Nathan Van Berlo, John Meesen and Chad Gibson and rookie list players Ryan Nye, John Hinge and Jonathon Griffin had been slated to play in the intra-club scratch match.
Meesen, Van Berlo and Gibson were recruited by the Crows in last year's AFL national draft while Nye, Hinge and Griffin were snapped up in the pre-season draft in December.
They are now likely to be seen for the first time in match conditions at Norwood Oval next Friday night when the Crows take on North Adelaide and Norwood. Adelaide's Port Augusta expedition yesterday included a training session at Central Oval, visits to local schools and a forum at Port Augusta Secondary School.
Today players will head to school and hospital visits in Whyalla and Port Pirie before Craig and his assistant coaches put a local development squad through its paces at Central Oval.
