So if we are getting less AFL funding, does this mean they can relinquish control back to the members?

The way that’s worded makes it sound as if the AFL is an altruistic benefactor providing welfare, rather than a body engaged to oversee the distribution of collective revenue.

As Eddie McGuire always pointed out whenever AFL House got too big for its boots, it’s the clubs that make the league and the governing body works for them.

Not a peep when it was against SPP

“Kangaroos great David King questioned if umpires “have got a different interpretation” of the blocking rule for Max Gawn after the Melbourne star was paid a free kick for what he described as “nothing illegal”.”

Yet Geelong, with a population of about a third of Tasmania's, continues to pork barrel taxpayer funds into MDMA park, which now has a capacity of 40,000.

Yep

It cost $90 million to build the Brownlow Stand, new football department and stadium entry which opened in 2017.

And then the current $142 million final stage now completed , with the state government picking up the entire tab.

While the federal government, local council, AFL and Cats themselves have all kicked in parts of the $340 million total overhaul of the stadium, the State Government is responsible for the majority of it — at about $260 million (not as a subsidised loan but a taxpayer funded cash grant).

Not bad for a member owned footy club that is debt free and had $6.2 million cash sitting in its bank account as at 31 October 2023. And which also has unique access for its AFL and AFLW teams to the Deakin University Elite Sports Precinct which features an oval identical in dimensions to the MCG (also substantially taxpayer funded).

And the cream on the top for GFC is that they are the sole owners of GMHBA stadium so they get the majority of the revenue from every ticket, drink and food item sold during the minor and major rounds of the AFL season into perpetuity. (not to mention the huge sponsorship income)

Will be the richest club outside of West Coast within a decade.

Tassie Colours, no surprise - Mrtyle (green), rose, primrose (yellow) state guernsey colours since 1908.
Nickname - Devils, nothing adventerous on that front.
Logo - as per below. There is going to be a public comp to give him/her a name.

INXS' Devil Inside to be their run on song??????????????????????????????/

So who is going to take advantage of the Tassie expansion player drain and win back to back flags in 2029 and 2030 after their 2027 draft impact and U/17 signings in 2026??

The GC and GWS expansion player drain started in 2009 with 10 x U/17 signings for GC but the big impact was at 2010 and 2011 drafts with both clubs getting 9 of first 15 picks to keep or trade and meant hawks after making 2012 GF won their 2013-14-15 flags partly due to their main challengers not getting access to some high end kids a few years earlier.

KT talked about building the best U/23 squad in 2019. That U/23 squad should be peaking in the 2025-29 seasons.

McKercher and Sanders are going to make millions from this.

Tom McCallum might earn us one of those sweet priority picks if he can last on our list until 2028.

On the plus side, it doesn't make Geelong any less of a shithole

wow, that character and jumper are embarrassing

The Devil looks like a myrtle cat, The guernsey is a shocker.

Looks like something that a primary school committee came up with for their basketball team but I bet Tassie taxpayers paid a marketing company close to a million for it with stakeholder focus groups etc.

Edit: it's all about marketing to the state atm - I'm sure they will finesse the jumper design once they take to the field.

I actually think Richmond benefited more than Hawthorn and the quality of the League was weakest 6-10 years after the expansion drafts when those players should have been peaking. Richmond drafted Dusty in 09 and bottomed out hard around that time.

That would mean West Coast or maybe a team yet to bottom out - I bloody hope it isn’t Geelong or Richmond again.

Nigel Smart working for Tassie or what? Great traditional state jumper, but geez use some imagination and create something original for the CLUB

Hard to think of anything less imaginative. The logo and name is lame but whatever, it's ok. The jumpers are.. very ammos.

It's a shame no-one actually showed them a photo of a tasmanian devil before they designed that.

Most of the wild population now have that nasty Devil Facial Tumour Disease so they might not have had a reference point. ;)

Membership page is up and running now:

$10 for a founding membership with a sticker (3 choices - get all 3 for $15). Smart marketing really - reckon people from all across Australia will be happy to buy one at that price and you'll be seeing that logo on cars all over the place by the end of next month.

All about creating momentum that the Tasmanian Government can't ignore, whoever wins the election on Saturday.

At least they won't need a clash guernsey. That'll clash with everything.

(Except of course for those of us colourblind folks. Telling green apart from orange or red on the football field will be a pointless exercise. I know white shorts look lame with most guernseys, but for some of us, they're a godsend in terms of being able to pick the teams)
