In our local paper there's a story about how Port Power has been warned by the AFL about inviting SANFL players to training. Apparently five players - including Bryce Campbell, two South players and two others - trained with them which was outside AFL rules.

Can someone please fill me in ... have I missed this story in the wider media? I hope so, otherwise the Southern Times Messenger is now breaking the big footy stories in Adelaide.

News to me. Looks like the STM is indeed at the cutting edge of footy scoops - kind of reminds me of the days footy journos would sniff out stories rather than wait for press conferences and press releases from the clubs. Should appear in the tiser any day now. ;)

No wonder we have to train indoors ...

Its not new for port power to be bending/blatantly breaking AFL rules in order to gain an advantage. For example when they were started they paid players to stay out of the draft, which incurred a small fine, but as a whole was morally accepted by the club and deemed for the greater good.

Then there was the cheating in getting Brett Ebert for the father/son. I think the only reason the AFL didnt fine them for that, was because having brett on your list is considered punishment enough. Nevertheless, a club as honest and as professional as the AFC with more central family values doesnt need to resort to these measures, so we play by the rules. It wouldn't surprising of course if this case you are referring to is just another example of port power looking for an unfair advantage.

Now where have I heard this kind of rhetoric before?:D

This must be a ''during the season '' rule. I am aware of Carlton having a WA lad who went over to train last summer in the hope of getting drafted. He didnt make the cut and was told to go to a league within Melbourne where they said they will keep an eye on him.

Nice :D

Cornes "broke" this story in his opening on 5AA tonight.
He referenced the messenger but sounded like he was reading directly from this thread.
Interesting.

You need AFL permission to let people from outside the club train with you. Its usually only granted in the lead up to the pre-season/rookie drafts.
