From the perspective of knowing we needed to prove ourselves in finals and the apprehension leading into the finals series, absolutely. But the broader context was entirely different.

Tredders famously described the team as "deadset spewing" immediately after the '03 prelim defeat. Hard calls were made on senior players. Allan Scott made his comments which fired up Choco more than ever before. The messaging was different. They were angry and determined to make amends.

Contrast to now where we get Hinkley saying he wouldn't change a thing, Koch saying things like Hinkley has the highest winning percentage of any Port coach, the club's media mouthpieces telling the fans that they expect too much, endless puff pieces on how happy and connected the players are and how wonderful their lives are, etc. They, frankly, sound like they don't give a crap.

So no, it didn't feel like this. The feeling was apprehension for sure. But you felt like they could get it done. Right now you'd either have to be blindly optimistic or not paying attention to believe the club is capable of achieving the ultimate.
More importantly you felt like they were turning over every stone and making every extra effort to get it done.

I was a kid so a win was a win for me, but this is how I'd imagine most would've felt in 2004 H/A.
I actually had more faith in 2004/than I do now. Our group booked flights and accomodation for the GF in June. Even if we were to make the GF I wouldn’t bother spending the coin as this team has the mental fortitude of a 5 cent piece under Hinkley.

2004 we were still port Adelaide... Not this southern power shit.

Umm I am not sure about that as I was in the Qantas club with the players and on the return flight to Adelaide with the team after the prelim in 2003 and the term spewing doesn’t cone to mind.

Yeah I get that but it's still good to hear anger and disappointment from your captain (sorry, 'appointed captain') than whatever we'd hear these days.

I saw Matthew Lloyd at Adelaide airport one night hours after we beat Essendon at Footy Park and he looked distraught. The rest of the team, less so. There's a reason some end up Hall of Famers whilst most are quickly forgotten.

2001-03 teams were as weak as piss in finals. Every bit as bad as this current team.

Can't recall them ever being beaten by 71 points in a home final or losing back to back home prelims. They also went on to break through and win big games which this team is unlikely to do.

Nah didn’t lose a final by 71. But in 2003 we were 3 games and percentage clear in top spot and had been 18 and 2 since round 2. Yet found ourselves 40 points down at half time of the QF against a Sydney side that were given no hope in hell.

The 2002 QF wasn’t much better.

I think in 2021 for most part the dogs were rated higher than us and it was somewhat of a surprise we knocked them off in rd 23 to leap frog them, Geelong and Brisbane into 2nd. Many thought that ladder position flattered us and we weren’t actually going that well but then we played out of our skins in the QF that got us all believing.

The 2021 capitulation was pathetic and in our top 3 most embarrassing finals performances along with the 07 gf and 05 showdown semi.

But it was very clear we were the best team during the course of the 2002 and 2003 and the disparity between expectation and reality of those finals campaigns were larger for me.

Both the 2002 and 2003 prelims were barely competitive.

Tredders kicked 80 goals in 2004. How many do you think he'd kick with Ken's "gameplan"?

Safe to say no Hinkley coached side will ever resemble anything associated with 04.

Warren Tredrea is no Charlie Dixon.

WGT is a CHF. Wouldn't make Hinkleys team as all of our HFs are HBFs in disguise.

Wow, this preview thread has gotten a little sad.

Why not talk about the actual game…. Like, who will Drew tag? Or is our midfield a match? Or how do you combat 2 rucks….

You know, things about the actual game.
Will Hinkley out coach who ever the Collingwood coach is?

Like this? 😜😜

No way and also they had a few narrow losses at home in Qualifying Finals that hurt us more than the prelims.
They also have a small out that they were losing against a team that is universally know as one of the greatest ever
They also have another small out as they had only been in the comp for 6 years and were learning to win big finals
They have a huge out because they won in 2004. We should have got greedy and should have been better in 2005-06 before Danke's Handbaggers bulked up.

I’d like to know who’s going to bash Maynard.

The outs are okay in hindsight because we got it done in 2004. But the 2001-03 finals campaigns were ridiculously frustrating and demoralising at the time. The 03 QF felt like Groundhog Day. We were much better during the season in all these years than we’ve ever been since, the expectation was that we would win those QF’s in 2002-03 easily.

Not sure why people are trying to downplay the chokes of those years, they sucked.

Trust me I didn't enjoy them at the time far from it. But I was never as despondent as what I have been through Hinkley.

I dunno, we've won a lot of games on the road against the lesser teams but haven't had a big win on the road against one of the good teams or any of our bogey teams like Collingwood, Geelong or Brisbane for a long time. We might've knocked off Collingwood in Melbourne in 2021 but they were trash that year.

Probably the last really big win on the road i can think of was against the dogs in round 23 2021. Maybe Sydney in Sydney last year, but they are our current bunny.

Reigning premier Collingwood at the MCG is not the sort of game we ever win, if we can knock them off it's definitely a step in the right direction.
Yep. We have a poor record against good sides at home, but when it comes to top 4 sides away, we just don't win those games. Personally I think Collingwood will end up top 4 by the end of the year. They have faced GWS and Sydney in the first 2 rounds, their lack of preseason caught up to them. After winning 2 on the trot and smacking Brissy in Brisbane, they're back on track.

2023: (0-3 away against top 4) 2nd Brisbane, 5th Carlton and 1st Collingwood smacked us away last year. (71, 50, 48 points)

2022: (0-3 away against top 4) 1st Geelong, 2nd Melbourne, 4th Collingwood (35, 14, 6)

2021: (0-1 away against top 4) 4th Brisbane (49)

2020: (0-2) 2nd Brisbane, 4th Geelong (60, 37)

So we're going 0-9 in last 4 years, average losing margin of 41 points.

There's this myth that come finals, finishing top 2 means nothing to us. It's a myth, it's wrong. Yes we have very little chance of winning at home, because we are flawed, but at least it is a small chance, because we have absolutely zero chance away from home.

Reigning Premier clashes
2015 - Hawks at Etihad - 22 point win.
2016 - didn't play away against reigning Premier
2017 - WB at Mars - 17 point win.
2018 - didn't play away
2019 - WCE at Optus - 42 point win
2020 - didn't play away
2021 - ditto
2022 - Melb at Traeger Park - 14 point loss
2023 - Geel at GMHBA - 12 point loss

So maybe if we look back at those games against reigning premiers from 5+ years ago, there's something to hang our hats on.

I think we’ll win for some odd reason. Were play well. It’s the flip game in finals we would lose
I feel a bit the same.

This seems like one of those trick minor round games that get our hopes up again, only for us to lose to the same team in embarrassing fashion in finals.
