A few here have mentioned Laird giving away the 50m penalty for "pushing" after the mark, honestly I think that was one of the softest 50m penalties I've ever seen. He barely even touched the guy and he took a swan dive. Shouldn't have been paid.

Laird was like most of our team last night, alright in patches but down overall. Did some nice things, not great but certainly not our worst.

He was overall pretty good. Those two mistakes cost us 2 goals though so room for improvement.
He gave Port to opportunity to dive, and Port will take that every day of the week.

I feel good about the game, but largely because the hill was packed and not ideal for viewing, I probably didn't take in much of the quality of our play or lack thereof, and you know, we beat the ****ing Power and took back the ledger which is really what I'm about at Showdowns.

Never should have gotten that close at the end, and really we do need to review our strategies for holding a lead. The fact that we couldn't find any chip kicks for an entire 10 minute window isn't great.

I chose not to spend the evening frustrated about Nicks rather than trolling every Port fan that I know in increasingly merciless ways, because we get very few things to celebrate as a fan and **** missing that opportunity.
I feel the same really.

Was at the game a few beers in, girt by port fans, several of them mouthy. Just relieved to get the win in the end.

Thought about being a bigger man this morning but also have texted anyone I know who’s prone to gobbing off.

I've been reading the Port board and they are in a world of pain.
The best thing is the knowledge that they are 13th, probably won't make finals and yet don't even have a 1st round pick this year.
Butters says hello

Laird should never have even given the umpire the opportunity to pay a 50.

That’s why it is so infuriatingly dumb by Laird.

Yes. That may get them 2 but without him it will set them back a long way just like the loss of Houston.
We all know it often takes a couple of years before a player can start to be a game changer, but you never know other players may jump a sinking ship

A more interesting part of the 'did we go too defensive' side of things is why were we so poor at it. No clock control, no possession, seemingly no system designed to milk out the game.

Didn't feel like a team that knows what to do in that situation.

100% this.

If Nicks' vapid "work-ons" cliche has any meaning whatsoever (which is debatable) then he should be looking at that last ten minutes and thinking that we need to put a whole lot of time into practicing closing off games.

Hell, Collingwood just won a flag two years ago from being experts at that very thing.

That exact action would happen a hundred times per match. There was nothing whatsoever in it.

If we're going to say "don't give them the opportunity to pay it" then we're really saying "never touch an opposition player after a mark in any circumstance".

It was a terrible call from the umpire.

By what metrics? His role requires ground ball gets and handballing to better users. He is doing that fine.

But having a great season? That would mean he is clearly undroppable which is definitely not the case.

Didn't you answer your own question.

If his role is ground ball gets and hand balling to better users - he is currently 4th (behind Baker, Wilmot, Sinclair) for all defenders for ground ball gets. He is averaging 21+ disposals a game and has a DE of 81.6%.

Thats the toughest thing for a fanbase to swallow.

The one positive of 2024 was that we got a top 4 elite midfield talent (disregard he is stuck in the SANFL right now).
