Don't forget about Pedlar either in this.

You can certainly carry one or two forwards who don't bring a whole lot of goal scoring power to plug other gaps when you have three who will.
But..

Why carry anyone if you dont have to?

Whats with this weird “ahhh, we can have one or two underperformers” attitude to this?..

We shouldve realised murphy is garbage.. and given other players like dowling, cook or nank a good solid run at it this year.. (nank finally got a run in the end but as a half back) and if they dont perform after being given a solid block of games.. start looking for something else.

This club seems to really love clinging to certain players that are underperformers just cause they try hard.

Think one of Pedlar or Rachele becomes the 4th midfielder, in Schoenberg’s absence (with some forward time still, of course)

So the small forward trio would be one of Pedlar/Rachele-Rankine-Murphy (or whoever), with all bar Murphy getting some bursts in the CBAs as well

Or maybe both Pedlar and Rachele split the time the 4th rotation mid would get

Peds kicked 25.15 which is a pretty good return for a guy we aren't developing to be a forward.

No team is ever going to have 22 stars though, look at all the premiership 22s over the years. Every one of them has at least one Murphy ala "one of these things is not like the others"

Heck even look at ours! Clay Sampson and Aaron Keating come to mind

Fine to have Murphy as depth, but shouldn’t be a walk up start and finishing top ten in your B&F

Murphy is our fourth most effective pressure act/tackling forward behind Keays, Rachele and Rankine in that order

McCreery is Collingwood's second best pressure forward behind Taylor Adams (if he counts)

There's no need to overrate Murphy's contribution to the side. He's a role player who is pretty average at his role. It is what it is.
I’ve already said McCreery is far more effective with pressure and that I rate him much higher

Edwards interview today said no
ok thanks man. Can I ask what interview? radio etc?

Lots of catching up to do tonight but genuinely have you been more excited by ANY draft propsect in the last half decade or so? Perhaps its just the surprise of landing him where a top 3 pick wasnt out of the question but what an extreme level of elite traits this lad has. SO pumped

I agree, but the differences in actual impact on a game to Murphy are so small they clearly don’t matter to results, especially when we know that our scoring potency is already elite. Swap Murphy and McCreery and I reckon you get the same people underrating McCreery at the Crows (or just flat out whinging about his selection) and overrating the quality of what other teams have in the same role (Murphy in this hypothetical).

SEN with Bicks

Murphy plays further up the ground for little additional impact, and is inferior playing either a pressure or goal kicking forward role

For example it takes Murphy roughly 50% more disposals to generate 30% more inside 50s and score involvements
Murphy doesn’t play higher than McCeery , they both play high

McCeery even pushes up onto wing at times

I think that’s the reason McCeery isn’t a big goalkicker either

Brahahaha you’re using positive stats to spin a negative you hate Murphy so much

Also no one is saying Murphy is better , just that his stats aren’t much different to someone we all rate highly in McCeery

I think the issue isn't so much Murphy vs McCreery, but more why are we playing a 4th/5th small forward that has little impact on the game and is less effective than all of the other smalls in our forward half?

Like why have we created a role for a specialist pressure half forward when he plays that role worse than Rachele, Rankine and even Keays? Do we even need that sort of defensive role when the guy we put in it is less defensive than our major goal kickers?

You're right in that there's been a rotation of whinging about that player (Murphy, McHenry, Rowe, Knight, Wright, etc) so it's more about the role being ineffective and better used on a different type of player

I wouldn't be posting this like it's a good thing...
Obviously the coaches rate what he contributes to the team. They're going to keep him in the side until someone vastly better steps up - they're obviously not still testing him to see what he can offer.

They know what it is and they value it.

Who did we draft that could replace him?
No one. They're obviously not looking for a kid to replace the 6th place finisher in the B&F. They're currently not looking to replace him at all.

For those desperate to replace him, probably the best chance is Keays as a full-time pressure forward, with Rankine/Keays/Pedlar as our three smalls

So you and they must think he’s as good as we can get in his position right? He’s that good.

Interesting given they didn’t pick him rd 1, dropped him during the year and have dropped him basically at least once every year since he’s started.

Yet you named Murphy in our SANFL side.

Why?
