With no opposition player allowed to line up on the back of the square and wingmen having to line up on the sides, it opens up so much space to create a quick entry.

Looking forward to Schultz running around. Reminds me of a hybrid of Brady Grey’s rig and physicality, Michael Walter’s leap, and peak version of Hayden Ballantyne’s crumbing.

If you hit the ball outside of the honey trap that the centre square is, what then?

It's only a few seconds from the arc into the centre square, at least for the athletes, I might need a bex and a lay down or two.

Say for example that you hit the ball forward, if your team mate gets the ball from running from the forward arc, they aren't facing the forward line and are somewhat blind about the what next bit (own goals are over your shoulder). But say that an opponent running from their D50 get's the ball, they are facing their forward line - hey, we are talking about a centre bounce, not ordinary play... they have loads of team mates coming towards them, one of them is going to be clear for an uncontested mark.

I'd hazard a guess that there is some advantage going forward, but outweighed by the advantage to the defenders slingshotting that to their own forward line.

If you had control of your tap, well, fine I guess, getting it to your team mate is getting it to your team mate. I don't know that ruckmen can be reliably surgical to hit the ball 15+ meters or it would be in the standard textbook of how to ruck. I played defence as the fat kid, last picked because I can't catch the ball (let alone mark it) and in a small school you still need enough numbers to fill a team, so, those center clearance thingos are foreign to me and I am just conjecturing here

I look at it a little differently

It's not just Ross rebuilding a side. It's who the recruiters draft. It's all coaches being capable in their roles. It's his game plan standing up in home and away as well as getting it done come finals.

It's a whole club approach

Yes I have some doubt with Ross but I'm not convinced with a number of areas of the club. I however couldn't care less about external noise. * the obsession from west coke and other club haters

It's lends itself to an interesting question - what is the most difficult thing to do as a coach ?

Rebuild a side from a terrible position

Keep an successful but ageing side from falling off the cliff

Turn a regular finals side into a premiership contender

Get a team out of no mans land and into the finals

I'd say getting a team out of no mans land might be the most difficult job because you probably won't get as much leeway as a rebuilding coach and you haven't got the runs on the board of the other 2

He’d be ideal imo. I was surprised he was pigeon holed as a mid from the day he walked into the club. I thought initially he might play as a small forward.

I just don’t see anybody that he pushes out of the side!

Really looking forward to see how Schultz goes at AFL level - I've only watched a couple of highlights videos but he seems to have good goal sense and isn't afraid of a pack mark, looks pretty quick too

I can’t remember ever seeing the club try Crowden as a small forward but from memory Neale looked a natural there early on - he’s just a better midfielder. Crowden probably is too.

Maybe Matera can play it, but looking forward to Mr Henry nek year. Crowden is an inside mid - needs to build his tank and find a little more composure at AFL level. Fair assessment I think. In terms of the draft though, I think the value selection is small forwards who can run through the midfield rather than specialist small forwards. The 6/6/6 may change that a little bit I guess, but Neale and Walters over Ballantyne and Matera for me. Not fair comparisons, but they make the point.

I actually thought we were when we drafted Crowden and Giro. My bad. Apparently we were bulking up our midfield depth.

Both had very good U18s for SA in the midfield. Think Crowden was their top or second top possession winner, whilst Giro just tore down the wings.

Peak Ballas was better than Neale and Walters as small forwards. Not really a fair comparison. No problem with rolling a small thru the mid for a couple of minutes each qrt. But recruiting for a 70/30 or 60/40 mix annoys me. Neither role is easy and it’s quite rare to find a talent that can seemlessly transition between the two.
