2-7 in last quarters and the two we’ve won have been by 1 and 2 points.

That may be the combo of the gamestyle being completely based on pressure for reward and at the moment we have no forward line to get our reward and a little bit due to putting all this pressure on and not winning free kicks and turning the ball over.
That's what I've found frustrating not in our game but in most. A team will be all over another backing them up hurried handpasses/throws and drops and no whistle. The ball eventually spills out and the team moves the ball and those that applied that manic pressure are left gasping for air

Bloody this. They shouldn't have called advantage, ball should've gone back to McKenna (with a 50). The amount of times we've been burnt by poorly judged advantage calls...I've seen them take back an advantage against us, we should've got that here.
Yep. And mckenna likely doesnt lose his cool. 12pt turnaround.
Add keeffe elbow to Tippas head.
Annoyingly had smack kicked what he should have though, none of this is that relevant.

Also hurts to look at what could have been a % booster if we had gone for the jugular in the 2nd half.

Finally, someone else awake to it. Last 4 games have resulted in an average of 8.75 touches, 3.5 marks, 1.5 tackles and totals of 9 FA, 18 clangers and 0 goals 5 behinds.

That being said Stewart hasn't really done a lot either
Ill give stewart the time he needs after the lay off. He's not gonna be our best fwd, but his and contest means he demands attention.

Smack brings the ability to ruck. That alone keeps him in.
With some luck on the injury front, we could have been fielding daniher, stewart, stringer, tippa, fantasia and laverde each week, with langford pushing forward off a wing.

Daniher and stewart can provide rucking support. And give less frees away.

But such luck is not ours. And his frees against cost us

The himmelberg one was funny.
No eyes on the ball. Only intention is to stop smack competing. Smack gets rid of him and he's pinged. Ump had a good 3-4s to call that block.

Thought we played ok for much of the game and could or should have won.

Given our injury list we dont quite have the manpower on the ground at this time.

We need to use this time to work on our game plan, explore how to reduce the constant negative free kick count, and blood our younger talent.

I hope the Saints,West Coast, or Geelong win the flag this year.

GO BOMBERS

How was Shaw hit onTownsend not any worse than McKernan on Ward? His elbow is not tucked into his body

Shaw is just trying to catch the ball I reckon. The frame you have shown is not reflective of the moment of impact. Shaw is not looking to bump at all. Both his hands are in, trying to grab the footy until Townsend smashes into him, the ball spills and his arm moves up.

We can’t have a sport where you get a free kick if you throw yourself headfirst at an opponent. If you’re first to the footy you get some protection.

I know these things are line ball. This is just the way I see it - and I’m pretty one eyed with umpires usually.

To dig my hole further, in the cold light of day I think the Ward free was probably there. You’re taught to get low, and he got to the ball first, lower than McKernan and caught some high contact. That doesn’t in any way excuse his embarrassing exaggeration of the contact. But it was there.

Is it significant enough for a free? Debatable. You could pay it or not and be right, it’s right on the edge IMO.

The only way to draw a parallel between the Townsend and Ward decisions would have been if Townsend, arriving second to the ball, collided head first with Shaw’s head iNstead of his shoulder. Then it could have been a free to Shaw.

No way Townsend deserved a free for high. Shaw arrived at the ball, Townsend second to it.

Having said that, should definitely have got a free for holding the arm

I think people are more p***ed off at the fact that it would have been a free if it was down the other end.

If Francis did that to Cameron in the goal square, the umpire’s 100% going to pay it.

I’m fine with no free to Townsend - but then Ward kicks the game winner from a less harmful hit. Either pay them both, or don’t pay either of them. The consistency in the umpiring is Really poor

He's not allowed to talk sh*t about the umpiring, and he obviously doesn't have anything nice to say about them. Saying he didn't see it is a very effective way to kill the question without being a dick or 'no commenting' his way to the front page.
The AFL is starting to make the Stasi and China CCP look tolerant and liberal

Umps have been balling us for years - we all know why and when it started.
We blew a lead again, nothing new.
4 tackles in our fwd 50 - 22 in theirs.
I'm actually surprised it took them so long to chase the lead down.
Rutton is really going to have to think hard about what our best 22 looks like when all are fit.
Anyone that wants out this year, let them go ffs - even if we get unders imo.
We can grapple and get by in a tight contest but are nowhere near being contenders.

If the AFL doesn't come out and fine Ward for staging or say the free kick was incorrect after doing so for Papley, it 100% confirms a bias against Essendon and I'll be done with the AFL. So many games thus year (not just Essendon) have had abysmal umpiring. What sort of organisation changes the interpretation of rules not only from round to round but quarter to quarter. No wonder this sport hasn't taken off overseas because no one understands what makes one incident a free kick but the same thing happening 5 minutes later is not.
Rant over.
It’s more then that in my mind. How about some of these spineless media types call Ward out? Make an example of him. Ask the serious questions to the player himself and the club. It’s happened in the past. But
Nah. ‘Ward is a good bloke and all and it wasn’t that bad’ I can hear it already

I'm completely over the corrupt umpiring. Last year with the goal post, last night's game. Numerous other games where the umpiring has been blatantly biased against us. 26-19 free kicks GWS's way in a match where we had most of the play. I'd like to know the free kick count in the last quarter when the game was on the line. It seemed inordinately skewed towards GWS. It's seriously turning me off the sport knowing we're not going to get a fair go. I wish I liked Rugby League a bit more to be honest so I could just follow that. It seems like there's a lot more consistency with the refereeing.

8 free kicks for GWS + a 50 in the last. 1 free kick for us.

**** Ward, **** the Umpires and **** our shithouse defensive gameplan. Every other club locks the footy inside their fwd 50 when they get it in there, it feels like we start to defend from the centre of the ground. No wonder our defense is constantly under pressure.. been doing my ****ing head in for weeks now..

Absolutely pumped in the clearances by GWS. FFS can we please just bring in some midfielders.

For those of you wanting a guy who throws his mouthguard, it hurts you the other way too.

$500 fine doesn't seem like enough for Ward that dumb flopping campaigner.

We as a collective group of supporters, from all teams, should be banding together against bullshit umpiring. Because by not doing so it means that we inadvertently send the message that we're happy to cop it - and in due time, it will affect all teams at any game.

It sets the precedent for a horribly umpired Grand Final - one that could cost any team a flag. And we literally know it's coming - it's only a matter of time.

The 4 inside 50 tackles is a pretty damning stat. We know we've got an undersized and under-skilled forward line so we can't afford to be outworked just let the opposition waltz out with the ball. We seem happy to set up a wall across the middle of the ground for the rushed clearing kick if it comes, but we really don't generate enough pressure on opposition ball carriers.

Paying frees has nothing to do with harm though. Suspensions do.. but there is nothing in the rule book that says pay a free kick if the high contact is really hard, but don’t pay one if it’s high but not super hard.

I agree with you though that if Townsend’s was at the other end Cameron would have been lining up - and the inconsistency is maddening.

They haven't been great either but at least they haven't decided 2-3 games every round this year. Good example of when they get it wrong...
