Membrey is listed at 6'2". My point is that Balta was given his opportunity and proved himself as an alternative to Astbury not an offsider. Arguably the selectors should have made a hard decision one way or the other when Astbury recovered. But now the question remains what is the best back line set up and who gives Nankervis a break against St Kilda and against Port and Brisbane/ Collingwood/ Geelong if it comes to that?

This is incorrect. Our defensive set up most weeks for the last few years has been based around three talls.
Rance, Astbury & Grimes.
Astbury, Grimes & Broad.
Balta, Grimes & Broad.

And now Astbury, Balta & Grimes.

we tried chol as a tom lynch replacement, not as a ruck.
And fortunately we now have Tom Lynch back so a replacement is unnecessary. So the key question is whether Chol can perform as an effective replacement for Soldo. If the match committee believe he can, he should be an automatic in because we play to a better structure with two rucks. If they don't, he should be dropped and replaced by whoever the match committee believes adds the most to the team's overall performance. The decision is very important because whatever we do on Friday night will play a large role in determining team structure for the remaining games of the season.

Crazy to think we've won two flags in three years, a prelim in the middle, basically have only lost Rance, replaced him with a more than capable Balta, still have the best big game player in the game, yet media clowns are talking up the saints who barely made the finals for the first time in 10 years. Crazy.

And if the media read it, they'd say your comment sounds like typical Richmond arrogance, LOL.

I love Caddy but he's simply not going to work in the team anymore.

Think about it. We've got more midfielders than ever now (Rotation 1 Cotchin Edwards Bolton. 2 Prestia Lambert Graham + Martin) and it's so deep there as well. Means we can release Martin forward more often, and with the likelihood of three talls, there's just no space for a medium-sized forward target who is neither quick nor supremely athletic.

If Josh plays, he needs to be a bit like a Liam Ryan, who can jump over packs. He's not adding to our Castagna-esque ground level chaos. He needs to be a target, and with three talls, or even two in Jack and Tom, that can't happen.

He's too slow to play on a wing, and not consistent enough to play midfield.

He just doesn't fit.

yeah but his last game was poor, thats how we judge isnt it?

His last few games have been poor, it's his lack of even contesting the ball a lot of the time is my knock on him.

If the ball doesn't go directly to him he hasn't even been halving the contest, he gets outpositioned easily and the opposition just mark the ball or run away with it.

He did show a bit early in the year but his competitiveness is too inconsistent at the moment, we have a whole team of competitors and can't afford any passengers in finals.

Also mate I know there’s a bit of research out of the states which is demonstrating that quite a lot of concussion injuries are often symptomatic due to the triggering of significant hormonal imbalances.
Often guys returning from war who are diagnosed as having anxiety/depression are actually suffering from repeated head trauma, sometimes even repeated sub-concussive forces, which creates a hormonal imbalance.

I’m assuming that you and your family have probably looked into everything and I’m no doctor, no idea if it’s got anything to do with your brother but if you’re keen to explore something you may not have could be worth an investigation.

I know there was a guy on Rogans podcast years ago discussing it. I think I posted about it when Reece McKenzie left the tigers.
Something to look at for you anyway if you feel it is of any use :)
Thanks Cotcho. The problem is the epilepsy. It's a terrible affliction. It's caused by the repeated concussions.

He's been to every specialist in Melbourne including a week at the Alfred as part of a study into brain injury confined to hospital bed with a shaved head and wired up with electrodes to monitor his brain activity for a week. They know what's caused it. They just can't stop the seizures. Medications help. It's screwed his life basically. He can't drive a car for example. He just isn't the same person. It's pretty sad.

Anyway, this thread is about footy so I'll leave it there. Thanks for the folks who got in touch. Much appreciated.

Go Tigers.

Nankervis played 91% game time last Friday. That's the most he's ever done (obviously in terms of pure game time he's played more). In 2017 and 2018 when he rucked solo he was doing 80%+ most weeks, but last year with Soldo in the finals he was only doing about 60%. Since he was out there all game anyway last week and Lynch is coming back so he won't be needed forward, I don't see the point of having Chol in except insurance in case of injury. But if Nankervis goes down, even if we win this week, can we really beat Port and then Brisbane/Geelong/Collingwood anyway?

Even though i am not a fan, chol imo will play tomorrow. With lynch back, he becomes third target and can kick goals. Most importantly we need chol to help nank. Balta should not ruck, he is settled in his role and changing it only makes it complicated for him.
Only changes i see is lynch for aarts and perhaps caddy for pickett

I really don't like the idea of keeping Chol in.

If we get through that will mean he will stay in for the remainder of the season, because Port and the Lions both play two rucks.

You are 100% spot on (unfortunately for the team). The way Chol is playing, Caddy would provide more of a contest up forward. At 186cm Caddy could also be used in a Grigg style pinch hit in the ruck - to at least provide an extra hard bodied midfielder with some mongrel while he's there. His 40 plus goals a couple of years back also show he can be an effective forward.

He looked a little lost up forward, and at centre bounce ruck contests, but actually competed well around the ground in ruck contests, and splitting marking packs for the longer, down the line kicks.

Chol?

But seriously, for all the hate, Chol had 7 disposals and 1 mark vs JR with 6 disposals and 2 marks. It wasn't a great night for our guys taking marks up forward. Chol really wasn't as far off as people are making out, and will be much more dangerous with Lynch back where he becomes 3rd tall.

Ultimately, we need to get Nank thru 3 more games without breaking him, and I'm not sure a 195cm debutant is the solution to give him a chop out.

The difference was that that they needed 2 or 3 to combat Jack, while a gentle nudge was enough to put Chol out of the contest. I hope Chol is a long time player for us but his last few games he has looked lost and largely ineffectual.

yeah, his last 2 games as a full forward replacement for lynch have been poor. Against brisbane he still got 9 hitouts to nanks 11, so you can easily argue that as a second ruck he did prefectly fine if not outperformed nank.

Then why was he taking the centre bounces and looking like a dunce ?
9 hitouts to nanks 11, seems like he did fine to me. youd prefer to play someone who isnt a ruckman and have them look like more of a dunce? like martin last week for example? vastly superior to chol as a player, but vastly inferior as a ruckman.

I've stayed clear of this thread since the loss and that was a good decision.

Balta to ruck should be banned on all threads.
Ideal world wouldn't be talking about moving Balta, but we have a back up ruck crisis and Balta may be a solution. Id have Chol out Lynch and Balta rucking in his half of the ground. Time his rests so Nank takes all the centre bounces. We'll find out soon enough. Lynch back takes pressure off Chol so maybe he stays. I'd like Caddy IN for someone. Those guys who played their first final might Aarts , Balta, Chol might be better for the run. Ditto Prestia, Sheds, Dave, Houli
