Round 1, 22 changes

Good thing is opposition won’t know who will play forward and in game it will change constantly, making match ups difficult and not allowing defences to settle.

But that could also mean as a forward had we will also be unsettled.

Interesting times

Last two premiers have won with unconventional forward lines vs opposition which had conventional forward set ups.
Who knows what the club has in store, I know I don't and don't care really as long as we return to the finals.

I'm not sure he's best 22 but what of Lewis Young. I've barely heard a whisper of him this pre-season. Looked promising towards the back end last year.

Played a couple of games too many last year, although the experience won't hurt him.
Nobody expected him to play much in his first season, but he showed unexpected promise as an 18yo so there was a bit of a YLY "bubble" after his first couple of games. That bubble deflated as his senior form tapered off. If he'd played a couple less games I reckon there'd be a bit more excitement about him right now.

However the talent that got him picked hasn't gone away. He looks a natural footballer. He is still 19 and has put on 8kg since last pre-season. That extra bulk will help him compete better against seasoned opponents. He will just need a few games, maybe even the whole season, to get used to playing with this new physique. We just need to be patient.

I expect him to be a regular by 2020, maybe even next year. With the off-season arrival of Trengove and Naughton I'll be interested to see whether we continue to nurture him as a defender or play him more as a KPF which is where he played a lot of games as a junior.

I think he is a forward. With a fit, touch wood, Adams and the arrival of Naughton might be an opportunity to try him forward where he played as a junior starting this week vs the Pies.

I worry about Cordy at Full Back, I know we’re playing Trengove in the ruck, but against the Giants, I would play Trengove back and bring in Boyd or play Cordy forward, Roughy to ruck

Understand what you’re saying but Trengove looks incredibly influential in the ruck though. So agile and moves (almost) like a midfielder. I’d start it like that then see what happens throughout the game, can always move Adams or Cordy up forward and Roughead in the ruck.

The way we currently setup defensively and with the Giants midfield, Cameron and Patton will have an absolute field day against us based on JLT form....

Defence needs a serious upgrade on what we have put out so far...

We suck so bad in the air defensively. We have one of the games best defensive aerialists.........and he’s playing at the other end of the ground.

If that stands come round 1, the Drink needs to give himself an uppercut. Simple as that.

It’s practice matches, so I think trying things is good. But agree, it’s not looking like it works. I don’t buy that naughton and wood can’t play in same defence as King suggested, just makes no sense.

Biggs in for Williams, Boyd will come in too I think, if fit and Wallis also should be in our best team also if fit enough.

I’m not sure Dickson is right either.

I’m not sure we suck aerially defensively, but really we don’t have anyone who can play on the monsters. Wood, Adams, Naughton, Morris all are above average/or elite aerialists yet none of them should be standing on the genuine Daniher/Dixon sized bigs.

If fletcher Roberts had an ounce of athleticism he would be an elite player in the comp. Unfortunately he is too slow and too easily outbodied.

We are going to continue to face issues down there unless we push Trengove back and only if that succeeds. But by gosh if we are going to continue to go down the same path at least play one of the comps elite interceptors down back.

Team id like to see (but likely won't)

Biggs Trengrove Naughton
Wood Cordy Suckling
JJ Liberatore Hunter
Dahl Bontempelli McLean
Picken Adams Smith

Boyd Wallis Macrae

Dunkley Daniel Dale Crozier

FB: Crozier Adams Wood
HB: Johannisen Trengove Williams
C: Hunter Daniel Macrae
HF: McLean Bontempelli Suckling
FF: Dickson Cordy Dunkley
R: Roughead Liberatore Dahlhaus
INT: Picken, Dale, Naughton, Biggs

Assumptions: Boyd not in, Biggs fit, Trengove goes back on Patton or resting ruck as is the only one big enough, Wood returns to defense, Cordy pinch hits in fwd line with Red out, Suckling forward as a threat from outside 50 and has been average in defense.

It would not be that hard, during the pre season, for the club to put out a weekly bulletin updating the fans on players who have injuries and how they are tracking. Even the guy on the website who describes injuries during the season, only mentions who he wants to, never the full compliment of injured players. It is bullshit that paid up members and supporters are not told why players such as Wallis, Dickson and Boyd did not play on Saturday.

Agree with all of this. I wonder who we could contact to get some answers from the club as to why there is limited information shared publicly

I'm singing from the same song sheet here with one change. Roberts for Crozier and a slight reshuffle in the backline with Adams the floater. Basically I'm getting the band back together...for round 1 anyway. An argument could be made that it's one tall too many in which case the most ready of Wallis, Smith or Jong then gets the gig. There's talk of Crozier but not quite doing it for me yet or perhaps I'd just like more game tested familiarity amongst the players down there to begin with.

After why I saw today I’m going youth policy and looking to the future, get as many games into the kids as possible stop rewarding blokes who aren’t up to it coz they have a crack.

Campbell Roberts and Honey to never play again .

Jong Dickson Suckling and Picken(yes I know and I’m sorry) to only play if desperate

Wood. Trengrove Naughton
Dale Libba. McRae

English. Bont. Dahl

Int from. Daniel, Hunter, Schache, Biggs

I agree. Pre JLT it appeared we had a plethora of key backs but based on the ordinary form of Cordy and Adams the backline now seems very vulnerable. When we recruited Trengove I thought he would fill one of these spots and do some back up rucking only. To compound our problem we don't have a competitive CHF so Trengove is the 'everywhereman' for that role too.

MD I don't always agree and am not brown nosing, though I think you are onto something here. The 7 at the top is where our likely list adjustments will come from come Sept/Oct. Hopefully Dickson and Picko can get fit enough to play their respective roles somewhere close to 2016 form. The other 5 - I wonder if there would be any takers if they open up a mid season draft?
