Review Round 23 = Collingwood 100-124 Brisbane Lions

that is interesting - wonder if it's a headspace thing - not able to push themselves when top 4 sealed and then top 2.
Geelong game helped get top two.

Or do we have some fitness issues - is it the loading theory? So many questions really, but some of these stats - and those they showed on ON THE COUCH this week, are definitely concerning.

We've been two different teams before and after the BYE really. Let's hope the other team kicks in again after the pre finals BYE!
It seems we are prepared running wise. The Port game was above finals standard in overall running and at high speed too. Probably the most taxing game we've played under Fly.
It's now motivation and if the opposition have worked us out beyond repair.

Moore struggled for two games before he was injured too. Our stats pre bye and post bye are very different. DeGoey is part of it too I think. He missed those games around the bye, and hasn't quite been able to recapture his pre suspension form.
Moore was awful with ball in hand, but thought he was much the same until then. Got unlucky against Curnow.

We ran 11km less than Brisbane (282km vs 271km), worst differential under McRae. 2nd worst was against Hawthorn at -10km.
Most games we keep it to within 5km of our opponents, usually in our favour. So something is off running wise.
And games at marvel against the dogs and north we ran at high speed (sprints) around 350 times, season highs. Against Brisbane we only did 236 times, close to season low.
Then against Geelong we were running hard again.
Just observations
So McRae tanking the Lions games to blindside them come finals??

I thought about it and its possible... but why wouldn't Fagan do the same or be aware of itm

Lions didn’t have top 2 locked up?

...and needed to win for a home final.

This thread is interesting reading. We were no doubt planning for finals and our defensive finals plan was not seen by any clubs during home and away season. We are even kicking down the line more now. The whole team is now a defensive beast. The media were stooged big time haha. There clearly has been a Grand Final game-plan building. The great teams peak next Saturday.

Brisbane at Marvel was a practice match. Fly is a magician.

This sums it up pretty well. In addition to being less motivated than Brisbane in that game, the coaching staff seemed to treat it as a practice match to try out a couple of our last gasp strategies if things go balls up in a final, while not revealing our cards.

Pies have played strategically quite differently in the two finals to how they've played in the second half of the year. The majority of the game is played in a way to minimise the potential get opened up on the turnover by the opposition and allow our team defence to be set up, while when we get momentum, they go back to that handball chain and run and gun style to kick some quick goals. It's necessary to employ that against Brisbane in particular, who can take us apart in 10-15 minutes if we play all-out attack all game.

This is genuinely one of the best pieces of analysis I've seen which explains our late season form. Great work. You'd hope you wouldn't see that kind of differential in a Grand Final.

Now we just have to pray that those low numbers were motivation-based or training-load-based, and not some sort of gameplan kryptonite which the Lions have against us.
