Sheedy a Dee?

All this talk of Sheedy has me little concerned. Granted, off-field he will do wonders for the club, but on-field Im not so sure. We have spots to fill in our squad and Sheedys previous methods has been to trade, but if you look at the last few years his win/loss ratio in that field hasnt been that great. On one hand you have: Zantuck, Heffernan, Justin Murphy, Campo and on the other hand, well Michael and off the top of my head that seems to be about it for the positives. True, most of them were in the pre-seaon draft, but guys like this shouldnt be taking the spot of a kid you can develop for a third of the wage. He also has this rep for sticking with nothing players, Henneman, Bolton, Bradley, Johns all who have matured into nothing, we have enough Millers.

I agree that he hasn't been great over the last five years as far as drafting and trading, but I believe that there are different circumstances at each club.

Firstly, we have a different recruiting manager, one who is regarded as high-quality in the football community. I believe Essendon's main recruiting man throughout the 90's was Noel Judkins, responsible for putting together their fantastic team which won the 2000 Premiership. Around that time, he went to Collingwood and Essendon got Adrian Dodoro. His record isn't great and that reflects in their current list; great veterans but not a lot of promise after that.

If you look at our list, we have a very promising group of 18-22 year old players, something which Sheedy hasn't had since the mid-late 90's. He will do wonders with these young players.

Secondly, Essendon has always had a strong spine and leadership group. These are players who have won premierships before. So you could excuse Sheedy, to an extent, for trying to trade for experienced players, thinking that they could have one last crack at a flag. It didn't work out for the Bombers, and some of those trades did make you wonder, but I believe that is one of the main reasons why Sheedy went down that path.

At Melbourne, we don't boast those experienced stars like Essendon, so we are under no illusions as to our premiership chances. Therefore, I can't see Sheedy doing too many trades.

We all know that Sheedy got Mal Michael for a free ride, how about this? Sheedy= 2008 Dee's coach and get Judd for a free ride to the club? That would be very nice using this recruitment technique from Mal Micheal's situation.

This will be one of the best recruitment for the club in many years.

I thought you'd be all over this. I reckon Sheeds would be awesome for Melbourne, but it would just kill me! Imagine if you guys played us in a GF again!!!
Its a smoke screen he will coach Richmond next year boys dont get ahead off yourselfs bring back Stan Alves he was a good coach and Melbourne through and through.

Anyone see the Footy Show?

Looking pretty promising...Libba though? Pffft wtf.

Kinda creepy how they were filmed though, bit voyeuristic

Sheedy may be expensive but I reckon the money he would draw to the club through increased sponsorship and membership would well and truly cover his price.

Didn't catch it until the last 20 mins. What happened?

Sheedy met with Steve Harris at his house and then was interviewed by Hutchy when he was leaving Harris' place, then he interviewed Steve Harris about it. How convinced is Hutchy? The way he was going on about it Sheedy has already put pen to paper.

Also Ratten, Libba and Guy McKenna (who they said had the longest meeting out of those three also met with Harris at his home.

All coaches said they were here about the position. Harris said top or bottom position?

Cheers, at least they seem to be interviewing the right guys. No Cuddles - hopefully he stays the hell away.

I've just come back from a breakfast where Sheedy and Steve Harris were sitting on the same table, looking pretty comfortable amongst each other. Sheedy and Harris spoke to the audience and it was pretty much the same comments but it definitly looked promising

What makes you guys so sure that Sheedy is the answer to your prayers?

I will concede that he is brilliant at marketing and promoting himself, the game and his club however marketing won't mean much if you aren't winning games. (See Terry Wallace at the Tigers)

Sheedy has been at a club that has had unlimited resources to provide state of the art facilities, a generous coaching and medical budget and a wide recruiting network. These are things that he won't have at Melbourne.

Sheedy is currently in charge of a team that he has been able to build from the ground up. He has had fantastic players like Lloyd, Hird, Lucas and Fletcher at his disposal and despite these quality players he has been finishing down the bottom of the ladder for the past 3 years.

His recruiting in recent years has been questionable when he drafts recycled players like Zantuck, Heffernan, Camporeale, Alvey etc and his loyalty to guys like Bolton and Hennaman is questionable.

Sheeds is nearly 60 years old and he will probably only coach for a few more years. Wouldn't you be better off with a vibrant and enthusiastic young coach like Bond, McKenna or Ratten? Someone who is more up to date with the modern game and could stay with the club long-term.

Personally, I hope you get him as it will stop all the "Sheedy to Richmond" crap, I just don't know why you would want him so much.

I don't necessarily want a long-term coach. I just want a coach that'll get us a premiership. Sheedy seems to be the best option to take us there. It's very hard to judge other candidates who have only ever been assistant coaches elsewhere. Sheeds on the other hand has a magnificent record. Might not mean that it'll carry over to Melbourne, but you can't argue with what he has done so far. It's not that the other candidates are necessarily "bad", they're just "less good" than sheedy.

1. Because he isn't chris connolly

He has the runs on the board, plus i think he summed it up perfectly on tfs when he said he could bring spirit, cos we have none of it at the moment

Zantuck- Total and utter headcase.
Alvey- Played well when played but was always under an injury cloud
Murphy- Sensational first season and was hailed as a top recruit, went to the shitter in the second and is always remembered for that.
Allan- Badly needed an experienced ruckman to mentor Hille and when he wasnt injured was more then serviceable
Henneman- Always exceled at VFL, Sheeds was hoping like hell he'd do it in AFL sadly hasn't
Bolton- Is a handy spare parts man for us.
Bradley- Sheedy mistake. The bloke can't play defence to save himself but is a handy forward line option, he has good hands and his kick has improved.
Campo- Has been again serviceable for the Bombers.

Just a little insight on Sheedy's "bad" recruiting. Personally I'm fuming we aren't going to re-sign him, will be a real steal for you guys if you do.

I don't understand the talk of the bad recruiting. Surely Sheedy wasn't the only one who had a say when it came to picking up players for the bombers? Aren't there other people also employed by the club who's job it is to do this sort of thing?

I think that's true when it comes to young players but I think most coaches have control over which experienced/recycled players are drafted from other clubs.

"MELBOURNE chief executive Steve Harris has admitted there is a "spirit issue" at the Demons, and yesterday flagged the club's interest in Dean Laidley should he choose to explore coaching options anywhere other than the Kangaroos at the end of the season."

THE JUNKYARD DOG! I'm in.

I aint. Even though we need someone that can be a prick, he is a bit too much, as if Kangas would let him go
