No way known the AFL give us compensation picks for Birchall and Poppy. They would likely not get big dollar contracts elsewhere due to their respective ages and therefore compersation will likely be a very late round pick at the very best.
would be my read on this too, similar to when Tom Murphy went up there

Would appear the Club has made the decisions on a few veterans:

Birchall - not offered a new deal, he may want to continue his career elsewhere
Schoenmakers - not offered a deal
Ceglar - exploring offers to play elsewhere and get more games
Puopolo - not offered a deal
Smith - no read on this. Potentially exploring other opportunities

Burgoyne - decision pending

I note that it is the Herald Sun but did anyone notice they have linked more Hawks to GCS? Isaac Smith, Grant Birchall and Paul Puopolo now added to the Jarryd Roughead and Shaun Burgoyne articles. Hawks have said they are going to be working with Burgoyne on a new deal if he wants to play on and despite this being said publicly Herald Sun has continually written articles on him being chased. The Smith part is interesting as it would need to be a trade, the other two are free agents though so would need to be compensation coming back.

The GCS rumours seem to be based on whats best for GCS, they are assuming what we are doing, without doing any research, just typical journo things.

I think the critical part of all of the media coming from Hawthorn was Clarko saying that the list management will depend on how many & who are playing the positions.

Kids that should be pushing for best 22...
CJ, Scrimshaw, Jones, Cousins, Glass, Hanrahan, Kosi, Moore, Morrison, Nash, Pitto, Ross & Walker

...all at various stages of their development & useful as depth players with some potential would leave us pretty stocked outside of a couple of acquisitions in a similar view as Impey that really compliments the playing group.
Obviously the GWS boys will be starting caliber & shuffles the deck in the midfield & KPF structure for the better.

HFF & FP will be a tough gig to crack with midfielders & the 3rd tall looking to be the staple moving forward & I can honestly only see one FP specialist position available.

KPD looks weak. KB is still depth & Kosi isn’t proven yet. One more KPD would be great.

HBF & BP seems settled but due to inexperience in depth looks vulnerable but with an additional “Impey” like trade & the kids coming through, that would also look well set moving forward.

So really the likes of Burgoyne, Birchall & Poppy can be moved on without to much fuss even if their best is still good enough for another year, that year would be taking the development away from the next generation Hawks.

Adding Roughy to the 3 above looks like we are gutting the leadership but I’m 100% confident that the likes of Mitchell, Jags, Cogs, Sicily, Hardwick, Worpell & Wingard are the benchmark & leaders that can step up now.
Their level of competitive drive & ownership they have of their own standards is enough of an example for anyone playing with them to want to be better.

Ceggs would be an upgrade on some first rucks going round on current form
True. However, if Patton comes our way, I expect Ceggs will become part of a deal. Of all the players mentioned in the above posts, he by a large margin, would have the most currency.

There are a lot of teams in finals with deplorable ruck situations. Bombers, GWS, Geelong. I don't even know who the dogs ruck is and Nic Nat is missing for the Eagles. And Richmond have been without a ruck half the year. And when they do have a ruck he is not a real one.

How can they be so important and so irrelevant at the same time

Clarko just dropped on 360 that we're losing more football personnel this off season.
Perhaps Wrighty to carlton

Looking more and more that Silk is off. Shame

Man...I understand the GC offer is likely much more attractive than our one year deal but it sucks seeing our veterans leave. Seeing Mitchell/Lewis/Hodgey in opposition colours is wrong. Seeing Burgoyne after all his years of service would be just as bad.

Roughy got a fantastic sendoff as a Hawthorn champion. I hope Silk sticks around and gets the same next year rather then making up the numbers at a soulless GC. It sucks from a loyalty perspective. From a purely business perspective we would also get minimal for him (I doubt GC would even give us Richmond's third for a player who will be 37).

Sign him up on a 3 year deal - one as a player and two as our Aboriginal welfare officer (aka development coach)
I hear Gil’s in the mood to hand out ambassador $$$$$$

On a serious note Silk is an integral part of our clubs indigenous development program
There’s a reason he’s held in such high regard, within the indigenous playing ranks. The guy has an innate ability to assist, develope and educate all he comes in contact with
Whilst I love the him as a player his role off field is of equal importance.

He simply makes our club a better place

Isn’t the legacy of a player more than one club & as a part of the AFL in general?

Hodge has gone to Brisbane & had a hand in developing that club.

Mitchell helped get the Eagles a premiership.

Lewis had a bit of influence at Melbourne....

I see the guys like Silk & Rough as the perfect guys to resurrect a failing club & further contribute to the game as a whole.

One eyed views of other clubs success is pretty petty to be honest.
Game day is a different story to whip up in a club but the success of the AFL & in turn the money that goes back to the players & the community work done by a club at grass roots level is invaluable for the game.

I hope that there is a significant poaching of Hawthorn people to GC, a high caliber player included, to make them a better franchise.

The legacy of those people won’t be tarnished as Hawthorn people by helping somewhere else.
