Roast So, when does Burgess start getting some scrutiny?

I'm of the opinion that it is workrate more than fitness.

When players aren't chasing hard in the first quarter, and are getting smashed at the contests, that rings alarm bells about desire.

However, I do agree there should be some scrutiny on this area as well, as I do not believe our fitness is anywhere near what it was in 2013/2014.

The noises coming from the club were that Hinkley thought it was Mission Accomplished in regards to fitness, and the preseason focus for 2015 and 2016 was gameplan and skills. I think it may be a case of training priorities rather than anything Burgess has specifically done.

Apparently we just need to try more.
Exactly! That crap we heard at the end of last year was infuriating and now I'm 100% convinced we actually believed that it was effort that caused last year. We actually thought the run at the end of last year meant something and we did not adjust our Gameplan at all over preseason, we did not adjust our drafting strategy and we've been caught out in all areas.

When he arrived back to the club Burgess thought that improved fitness would come about by recreating game scenarios where the players are physically pushed to breaking point. When you apply this brute force formula over and over again then the players eventually gain a physical and mental superiority over their opposition, as we started seeing in 2013 and a bit more crystalised in 2014.

I don't know what's happened to this, but three seasons in and our players should be accustomed to this on game day and switch into it like clockwork you would think.

Based on today's performance, where's the club psychologist because right now these players turn on the effort when and where they feel like it. Or in some instances the mental lapses like Dixon's and Hartlett's shenadigans show to me they're mentally dumb or can't channel that anger appropriately when things are working against them.

AhChee cant run. Boak cant run. Ebert cant run. Hartlett cant run. Toumpas cant run. Wines can barely move let alone run. Young cant run.

Yep, they just need to try harder.

It's almost a contradiction that we can't run given Burgess' background. What the **** is going on?

Can't, or won't?

You think Boak doesn't want to run? I dunno that doesn't seem like him.

Boak is injured and shouldn't be playing. Ken is in denial because he doesn't want to lose the captain.

Didn't Bassett say it's the hardest preseason training he's ever seen at a football club in a radio interview a few weeks back? he's new to the program but it's an interesting thing to say if we've supposedly backed off a bit in that regard coming from a Craigy crowbot era player.

Shiel just ran away from Ebert like our man was in concrete boots. "Effort".

same thing happened last season.

At least we're consistent

Next weekend our blokes will be expected to play in the spirit of the Anzacs. What we've witnessed today is light years off that - how the hell do we manufacture such spirit inside 6 days?

We'll win next week. Then lose to Richmond. It's gonna be one of those seasons.

So if it's effort;
Why are the players motivated? They are well paid, well funded and well supported by both coaches and fans. They have something to prove and are pushing for finals/top four. Today we were playing a side at a similar level and one who has humiliated us in the past. If the players aren't motivated we have serious issues with the players or coaches.

If it's fitness;
Why are we so over trained? Have we trained too heavily in order to be fit in the second half of the year? Haven't we learnt from those periods where we pushed it too hard and suffered as a result? Why are we so flat even at the start of a game rather than towards the end if we are so knackered? Did we not look at Hawthorn and mimic their training? Will it get better? Why are sides like the Doggies, Hawks, Eagles and Swans able to train heavily and not suffer like us??

I don't think it's fitness...our slow ball movement makes us look slow. Even Kane looked reasonably quick in 13-14 because we moved the ball fast. Now we move the ball so slow that our players look slow and are less inclined to run to create because they won't be used anyway!

Strategic coaching is way above Burgess on the list of concerns atm.

I am but a humble supporter, well maybe not so humble, but from where I sit something happened in Dubai at the end of 2014. The players came back looking tired and jaded and some of the comments attributed to players suggested that they all felt physically drained. From Dubai14 onward our fitness appears to have gone downhill. In 2014 we were definitely the fittest team in the competition now we look anything but.

I have absolutely no idea what transpired between Burgess and the Coaching Staff but I suspect something was changed, maybe by mutual agreement or maybe otherwise in the wake of Dubai14. The fact that we did not go back to Dubai in 2015 would suggest that not everyone was happy with the programme. About the time of Dubai14 Darren Burgess also began to find other avenues for his expertise and I now wonder if the PAFC is his no1 priority? maybe there is too much self management and players take to much responsibility for their fitness targets? Maybe the players need to spend more time with Darren on the training track? Maybe someone who watches training regularly has noticed a change in routine over the past few seasons?

Just as our Coaching staff need a rethink Darren Burgess may also need to rethink what he is doing.
