Roast So, when does Burgess start getting some scrutiny?

Last year only the peoplr who were injured in preseason looked fresh enough to run woth speed and compete and the rest of the team looked physically cooked from day 1. same again today our team they looked like they were all vattling physically to get moving, all look tight sore and tired. You can see when they are chasing they just cant go

Disagree. as some commented elsewhere. at one point guys like Hamish, Boak and Ebo where just plodding along whilst a bunch of GWS players ran away with the ball, now Pittard and DBJ had no problems running and applying pressure (as the went on and did all day).

That is mental and they are doing it because Hinkley does Sweet F*CK all about it and picks those guys every week.
Well actually no, you don't know that.

For a start, DBJ has done less pre-seasons, he is probably not as spent. Pittard has a different body to the others rangier, and a better ability to accelerate quickly - always has had.

I'm not as willing as you to quickly go "all mental". I'd say there's a fair chance that some of them are physically burnt out, as Aker suggested a few weeks back.

Ah yes the Aker comment along the lines, that we will either win the flag or burn out. I thought he might have been protective of his old mate Cam Falloon, but maybe he actually knows something about our program.

Less preseason would indicate he isn't as fit. I don't for a minute think they're burnt out, they beat the hawks twice yet lost to Carlton and Brisbane - that in itself says that it is all mental. Lazy front runners.

Nah, you make too many assumptions and half-assed simplistic statements and I can't be bothered arguing with you any more.

RussellEbertHandball tag-team....

Contrary to popular belief I've always thought he's a pretty intelligent cat. Bit off a bit more than he could chew when it comes to the media but you don't win three premierships and a Brownlow without a fair idea of the game.

I never understood the love for Burgess to begin with. So many pointed to the fact he had spent time at the top level with Liverpool. With the resources at their disposal Liverpool are one of the great under achievers in Premier League history.

A bit hard to judge where we are fitness wise when the players don't give a stuff.

There is no overlap run, players are not prepared to chase and be accountable for their opponent. Plus the set up in the midfield is completely wrong.

So speaks an Everton supporter. :)

If it's mental or between the ears, why is a gymrat like Brad Ebert wading through treacle every time he attempts to chase an opponent or break to space?

For all the criticism of his disposal, you could never ever question his preparation, endeavour or effort. Yet he, along with a stack of others, all resemble one-paced plodders so far this year.

Are we truly to believe this is simply a case of him not wanting to or not believing he can run? Of all people.

Carn.

It did seem odd last year that Chad missed half the preseason and appeared to be our fittest player through the first 11 rounds or so of 2015.

whats going on with Wines, he looks overweight (muscle wise) and looks very slow

looks like he's only fit to play forward pocket in an ala Jarman role

Ollie got the second most hit outs for us (8) today. he is obviously our second ruck.

This in one thing that has to stop. Why would you want one of your best clearance players contesting the ruck.

This must be an instruction which is a great example of something the coaches can change.

I feel like we are trying to play the game in a way which is incongruent with the physical attributes of our list, and carrying too many players who aren't at 100%

We are trying to use a defensive set up which requires players to cover for each other, but Trengove and Jonas especially don't have the pace to keep up with this and get caught out.

We also seem to be carrying too many players, especially midfielders, which I think is stifling our run.

Polec won't be at 100% for a while now, but I think it's best to just go with this.

Boak is clearly not right, and Hammer looks like he needed another week.

The summation of my opinion on this matter is that we have done the right thing in trying to innovate and push for cutting edge solutions and methodologies by employing the brightest minds and talented individuals. However the way we have done this is all wrong.

We've gone for the bleeding edge rather than the cutting edge. We have consistently tried to reinvent the wheel and neglected the things that have been proven to work by investing in talent like Mladen and Burgess who aren't natural AFL strength/conditioning/nutritionists. To be innovative, you do not need to reinvent the ****ing wheel. You need only improve on proven methodologies. We're too busy trying new age things and living on the bleeding edge rather than directing our focus on the things that have always worked and then innovating on them.

Stop trying to reinvent the wheel, just improve on it. Cutting edge, not bleeding edge. For the same reason you never purchase a gaming computer with the absolute highest spec brand new generation hardware in it, you are bound to hit compatibility problems, bugs, overheating and so on. Always wait for the second generation - because by that stage the bugs are ironed out and you get a much more polished product. We need to be that second stable and reliable generation, not that highest spec new generation which may perform immensely, but doesn't always work and is prone to early life failure.

Yeah great post

Wish I could double like for your references

Does it not worry anyone rlse DBJ looks to be moving quicker and faster? Wingard last year looked like he was on roids such was the difference from him to the rest of the team

Fitness and mindset is not an either/or, it can be, and probably is, both.

When you're tired, sore (fitness mgmt) you become easily jaded, it is hard to get up and going, let alone repeat efforts (mindset). Think the whole squad needs to be mentally and physically refreshed.

Agree, we really do look knackered from the word go.

Wouldn't hurt to have a really light week on the track and a good bbq & drinks Tues. Let a couple of the boys sort out their issues and come out fresh against the Cats.
