Here is a very small comparison of Weideman’s contemparies. Cannot guarantee the absolute accuracy, but I think the issue of Weideman’s size being an issue is a bit of a furphy.

I hope and trust the club is allowing him to develop his skills/capability and possibly his aerobic capacity before they give him run in the seniors. From all reports it sounds as if he is going to be a terrific player, so I am happy for the Club to take their time with his development until they think he is absolutely ready.

Player Height Weight

Joe DANIHER 210 94

Darcy MOORE 199 93

Sam WEIDEMAN 196 91

Oscar McDONALD 196 86

Jacob WEITERING 195 90

Liam HULETT 194 90

Jake LEVER 194 85

Weid isn't as slight as people want to suggest...

From an up close perspective weideman is pretty much the same size as o Mac (from the missus)

Definitely was when they went H2H in the intraclub

Casey for premiers. Once the TAB opens the betting on this market I will certianly be putting a bet on this
They still have to win a final.

Couple of familiar names for Port Melbourne in that list.

Josh and Luke Tynan...Lucas Cook (8 d, 2 m, 0 g lol), Chris Cain who we were once meant to draft, Sandilands' brother, Mitch Golby and Jordan Lisle from Brisbane, Matt Arnot from Richmond. Sounds like a good win against a good side.

Port are 7th and Casey are 1st. At home. Port shouldn't have been in it for so long

What do we think Grimes will have to do to get a game in the seniors?

Is it a case of keep up the numbers and wait for an out in the midfield he can replace or does he need to add an extra string to his bow? Or is he wasting it with his disposals? Newtown and Grimes had decent numbers yet weren't in the bests.

For those that watch the VFL can they share any insight into the type of role he is playing? as it seems he is playing inside mid based on the 15 tackles.

Would be nice if Plapp added more specifics into his reviews but I guess as a player it wouldn't be encouraging to see all your deficiencies published on the clubs website.

I have a lot of love and respect for him - but to get a game he might have to change his DNA. Or team, if there is someone out there that needs him. I don't think he is in line for an inside mid position in seniors and he scares me a bit with ball in hand as a defender.

I reckon O Mac is still a bit physically under developed for AFL level myself, though even just one more pre-season could change that. At least they're both mature enough to be able to be used in a pinch this year if required (and I'm aware McDonald is already playing but I still don't think he's ready).

I reckon Hulett could be in line for a debut this year? Particularly if/when we get to the back half of the year and finals are out of reach.

Port have been the strongest VFL team for a decade too.
And they're struggling this year...their performances over the 9 seasons before this year have no bearing on if they are a good scalp
It's like saying every team should thrash Melbourne this year because we've been the worst team of the past decade

They probably both aren't at optimal size. But I'd think weids could handle a second or third tier afl defender
