I think Weidman lacks the athletism to make it in the back line - has the tuning circle of a cruise liner and is very poor below his knees. Can only run in straight lines and struggles to mark the ball. See if there is a sucker that will take him, because he's already getting older and not going to make it.

Not sure that's the biggest knock on him, the way Lever moves makes Weid look like Kosi

Probably worth remembering that Liam Jones was a total lost cause as a forward and Mitch McGovern was going the same way. So you can definitely see some remarkable turnarounds by sending failed forwards back. As long as he's on the list he might as well be trained as a backman from now on.

I don't agree with pushing Petty forward though. Petty is too good in the backline to try and reinvent him.

Levers lack of athleticism is mitigated by extremely good anticipation & positional sense. Not something I would expect Weid to have, having been a forward his whole career. Don't disagree that it's worth a try though, we have Weid for another year and it's quite apparent he wont make it at the level as a forward. Unless we can ship him off to another club I don't think we're losing much by experimenting with it in the VFL.

Yep, 25 years ago.
More recent example is Collingwood taking one of the best intercept defenders in the comp in Darcy Moore and trying to make him into a forward. They also tried it with Ben Reid when he was a gun defender. Essendon tried with Hurley and he was ok as a forward but much better defender.

Many more hits than misses. As they say the backline is where blokes who don't have the talent to play forward go.

Yeah I don't think it will work either but he's contracted and if another club doesn't want him we're stuck with him.

Casey well on top but innacurate early. Woewodin took a really nice grab 30m out but missed.

Goal to TMac makes it Casey 3.5 vs Sydney 1.1 nearing quarter time.

Appear to be playing all of TMac, Brown, JVR and Smith forward. Weid is in the ruck.

Few observations:

• Taj Woewodin looks good
• Joel Smith up forward is having an influence with his pressure and marking
• Bedford's attack on the ball excellent, but has been really fumbly
• JVR flies for literally everything
• T-Mac's work in the contest looks strong
