So far we've had 22 teams lodged for this week.
Below is the frequency of selection.
Big plunge on VDM who kicked zero last week. No love for Bruce who kicked 10!

For anyone who had Lipinski and didn't name a new player in his place the Pieman sub is Bruce.
If you already have Bruce the next Pieman sub is Treloar then English.

EDIT: I should clarify this only applies if Lipinski gets NO game time. If Lipinski takes the field at any stage - even if it's late in the last quarter - then you don't get a sub.

Pieman Rd 4 - Substitutes

The late change caused a bit of chaos today. Lipinski was withdrawn from the 22 (to become the medical substitute) and Lewis Young came into the side. Not only did it work well for the Dogs but Young justified his inclusion so it was a happy outcome. However it made a fair bit of extra work over here at Pieland.

As it may confuse a few, I'm posting a separate explanation here so you'll understand how it works.

Eleven Pieman teams had Lipinski. Some of them had him multiple times. Only two of them got back here before the game started to name their own choice of replacement for Lippi. So the Pieman substitute rules got their first serious workout today. They went OK but I can see some problems so I'm proposing some alterations for future rounds. See below for details of that.

Substitutes - how they are selected

If you have selected a player who didn't play then the substitute rule works through the following steps:
  1. If the withdrawn or omitted player becomes the medical sub (as Lipinski did) then he would still be part of your team if the medical sub was activated by the WB at any time in the game. As it turned out Lipinski was NOT activated so anyone who selected him will require a Pieman sub. (This is one of the rules I'm planning to tweak.)
  2. If you had the withdrawn player more than once (ie Lipinski x2 or Lipinski x3) you don't get a single player multiple times as the Pieman sub. You get two separate players for a x2 or three separate players for a x3. (I'm thinking of changing this rule in future too.)
  3. Then we work through the sequence of finding a sub until you've got as many as you need:
    • 1. You get the player who kicked most goals last week unless he's already in your team. That's Josh Bruce of course.
    • 2. If you had Bruce already or if you need a second sub you get the player who scored the next most number of goals. That was a tie between English and Treloar (3 each). The tiebreaker is the one with the higher handicap this week. In this case that means Adam Treloar unless he's already in your team.
    • 3. If you already had Adam Treloar or you need yet another sub the next choice is Tim English.
    • 4. Using the same rules the next choices are (in order): Dale and Naughton (2 goals each).
tl,dr Who got which subs?

None of those who had Lipinski just once had Bruce in their team as well, so they all get Bruce as their sub. They were:
BEaston
Curly5
DogBites
Dogs_R_Us
dogwatch
Fossie 32
theAthenian

Then there were the multiples:
Wocka had Lipinski twice but already had Treloar so he got Bruce and English as his subs. A good result!
Struggle had Lipinski three times but already had English so he got Bruce, Treloar and Dale as subs.

The other two (Boyd oh Boyd and weltschmerz) nominated their own replacement before the game started so no sub was needed.

RULE CHANGES
Here are the changes I'm proposing. I'll give it a few days in case anyone wants to comment before I finalise it.

1. Medical sub. It seems unfair that you could have a player who is a medical sub and he comes on with only ten minutes left to play (as happened in the Port v Richmond game). I think the simplest solution (easiest to follow) is that if your pick is the medical substitute then you will automatically be given a Pieman sub. No discretion will be given to you to keep the medical sub in your Pieman team.

2. It had some logic to it, but it seems unnecessarily complex to allocate three separate subs when you had a 3x and he doesn't play. So I'm thinking if you went for a multiple and that player doesn't play then you get just one player as the sub for him, either x2 or x3 as required. This seems easiest to follow.

If you want to comment on those proposed changes let me know by Thursday at the latest. Otherwise I'll formalise them.

There's an important consideration for those who had a sub today and who might need a carryover (default) team next week either by choice or because they forget to lodge their Rd 5 team in time.

If your team carries over next week it will include the player who was sub today. It will NOT automatically revert to Lipinski. If you specifically want Lipinski (assuming he is picked) you will need to post your Rd 5 team here to include him.

Two of today's teams that had Lipinski were carryovers from last week and may have been planning to do the same again next week. They were DogBites and Fossie 32 .

Don't say you weren't warned!
