While I like this initiative, there's a couple of things that concern me.
1. We're proposing using an historical Port logo to produce custom merchandise for those fortunate enough to be in this thread.
2. We're not involving the club in any way, nor seeking consent from the right people.
3. We're potentially taking revenue away from the club by producing our own merchandise.
What I would do:
1. Before producing a single cap, prepare some production cost estimates on various quantities.
2. Establish a unit cost with an added markup to make the total cost around the retail price of a premium cap of this type. (can be higher than usual because it is limited edition.)
3. Offer to give the club the total markup value in exchange for their permission and blessing.
4. Take orders from BigFooty Port Board and set a limit on the numbers produced. Potentially even have a numbering system on the hats.
5. Produce, distribute and deliver cash monies to the club wearing your new Prtz bling.
If you follow this, I would be interested and can also help produce the artwork for the caps. One thing to note, sometimes it's better to adjust the design slightly to suit the production method than be historically accurate. This might be one of those cases.

All good points bomber and I've been leaning this way since El_Scorcho alluded to it yesterday i.e. getting the club involved. I was planning to go to the Store next week anyway so I'll ask some questions about it while I'm there.
Also I tried my hand at a 'historically accurate' version this morning. It's rough (I only do rough!) but you get the idea.

I'd be interested to see how a refined/altered version can improve on it for cap use.
The word can't be trademarked and the age of the script means it will not be copyrighted either.
I'm in, leave the club out of it. They don't need the ball ache for a couple of hats. The money made would be miniscule and they'd have to go through a whole load of AFL crap.

Just get them bloody made.
Remember when they wanted to make pear merch a thing and it never really happened outside of a tiny icon on the warm up topsThere's no rush and I think it's worth asking them. Sure they might say f@#k off as nice as possible but equally they might like the concept enough to make it a 'thing'.
Let's just see what they say.

I dunno maybe this kind of thing is a bit too out there like Pear. Ports? Not exactly "on brand".
It is extremely unlikely then. Especially since they would only attempt to do so if they intended to produce items with it on. The word Ports has a long usage including outsde the football club. Trademarking wrds in common usage is very difficult. Copyright on the font has long expired. Not true.
This is in the "yes we ken" territory. Get it done you legends
