Had similar discussions on the tigers board as counter initiative as it sounds it seems the biggest problem from a list perspective is that they get far to much elite talent every year so every year they are needing to squeeze 2 - 3 more extremely talented kids into the 22

And it’s the same every year so instead of having a dedicated core of elite that they build around with complementary role players that play a lot of footy together as a group they just have a team of elite players but lack those experienced role players (they are the ones that are essential to taking an elite core to win a flag imo)

Different issue - as part of entry conditions into the VFL from the VFA, we lost players and almost half our zone (including, incredibly, Williamstown). This was after winning the 1924 VFA flag and beating the VFL "premiers" (Essendon claim the 1924 premiership, however no grand final was played).

Gold Coast have been given a truckload of draft concessions, however a major issue was targeting senior players during the contract year that, Gablett aside, weren't making longer term contributions to the club.
Contrast that with GWS who went for Ward & Davis who are still on their list.

Participation on the Gold Coast is going damn well and their crowds have held up half decent for a team that has been s**t their entire existence.
Both the the Giants and GC are there to grow the game
The Afl doesn't just give up on expansion like that, otherwise We'd have no Brisbane or Sydney in the AFL cos they largely struggled for the first 10-15 years.
