As it is, Hawthorn helped him out, by publicly stating 'he won't be offered a contract', which I don't believe was the case

We still have Willsmore, O'Rourke and Heatherley. Kade Stewart was most definitely not in the mold you are speaking of. On top of that Impey is a worse kick than Hartung.

I must say I am a bit bemused by our list management this year. Our inactivity in the trade period surprised me. Hartung is no world beater but he is better than Willsmere (who is hopeless) and most likely better than whoever we draft at pick 105.

I agree with cutting Stewart, he's not up to AFL footy. Heatherley lucky to get another year. Correct decision on O'Rourke - he gets one more crack.

Running in straight lines he was great, but decision making was not his thing.
I hope he does better somewhere else.

Cheers. For a team like the Lions, would he add any value or is he more likely to sit on the list for 3 years and play 6-7 unremarkable games per year before getting delisted?

Hmmmm.... Hartung unlucky but seems to be more to this story than we know. Stewart I'm 50/50 on, was promising in the JLT but never really showed that form again. Willsmore makes sense although being rookied is an odd decision given he hasn't really shown much

Happy to see Heatherley keep his spot, O'Rourke likewise. I think both can offer us a lot. Heatherley would need more match time to really prosper but you have to love his aggression.

Willsmore has probably been handed a lifeline on the rookie list because he has another year on his contract. Otherwise he would probably be gone also.
Pity about Stewart. He showed a lot of grunt in his first year and then plateaued. Probably a bit too slow for AFL.
Hartung is a bit too one dimensional for Clarko. Has speed and endurance but can't find his way through heavy traffic and his disposal by hand and foot is suspect under pressure. He will probably find a role elsewhere if he can play very wide and is not exposed by his limitations overhead.

No surprises here really - Stewart just too slow for AFL and as for Billy he is quick but unfortunately a bit of a P heart and I know he was an outside player but even they have to put their head down and tackle or take one for the team when it was his time to go but never did - IMO he was given every opportunity and didn’t take it at the Hawks - hope he learns from this and takes the next opportunity with both hands and goes for it

I'm glad JOR is getting another chance. If he can keep healthy, I think he will do really well for us.

I'm shocked about Hartung. Career high 22 possessions a game, and showed flashes this year. If there aren't some extenuating circumstances we're unaware of, we'll regret letting him go. Not just letting him go, but not getting anything in return. I rust the club to make the right calls, but I definitely don't get this one.

He's a poor mans lewis taylor and soft, I'd honestly be surprised if he got picked up.

I don't think Hartung is that quick of a wingmen. Everytime I watch him play, it's like he's about to explode and he's only just out-running a lumbering tall player. He always looked had a body of a 10 year old boy. Just compare Billy's physique to Impey. Impey looks ripped and is more explosive and faster than Billy will ever be.

Are any of our academy players outside midfielders? The only thing that concerns me about Hartung going is our complete lack of depth at that position. Makes me wonder if we have a plan in store.
