So hard but not impossible.

I suppose we'll see in a couple months. Trade period starts on Oct 4.
No not impossible, but the more pertinent point is after shedding Treloar, Stevo and Flippa we can't afford a player averaging 8 disposals. I mean seriously wtf?

Not at the detriment of investing in early rounds for KPP.

THE CLUB were of the belief you could get away with not investing low end picks on KPP and only hitting up cat b and rookies types to make role players out of them.

I think the biggest issue with our strategy was too many of the blokes we picked up late were done on athletic attributes not on footy attributes. With smalls I'd weight it towards athleticism, but talls the other way around, because its such an AFL specialised skillset that makes talls succeed. Yet we've recruited athletic talls who can't play footy with the hope of them learning.

There's yet to be a good cat b kpp (I don't include Keefe from the Dogs, because he would have gone top 5 if he didn't choose cricket) Cox is probably the best there's been from any club. Yet Hine just keeps adding newby athletic talls. And too many of his late draft pick talls have been the Mitch Macarthy type of good athlete who can't play footy. Meanwhile, the late talls who make it tend to be like Mihocek - good footballers who aren't athletically ideal.

Blicavs, Tuohy and Pearce Hanley have been handy...

I think talls need to be athletic but also know how to play the game. Ie most first round kpp selections.

I'd be very keen on Stephens, if we can manufacture something trade-wise. Would be a strong fit for us moving forward too.

Hopefully we can take advantage of the Swans cap squeeze and get it done for a future 2nd, and his $$$ shouldn't be too restrictive for our cap (for initial contract) I'd have thought? Compared to chasing a free agent etc

Stephens isn’t about cash it’s about cash it’s about game time. So your tight cap shouldn’t be an issue.

0.01% chance you can manufacture a trade with current selections. Would be like the swans offering future second for De Goey a few years ago.

He isn’t worth what you drafted him for, this is obvious.

Considering our ladder position...we could almost walk him into the PSD.
You wouldn’t be letting a former pick 5 walk out the door for nothing in any circumstances.

See Jye Caldwell as the value comparison... not Jordan De Goey

You aren't playing him though, diluting his value somewhat with that too. I think future second would be unders, but lack of opportunity and tight cap at the Swans might lead to a trade similar to that getting accepted. All speculation this far out though!

0.01% chance? If we’re being realistic, what’s your expectation?

Players are worth what the market defines their value. The Caldwell and Hatley situations show clubs can be bent over.

if Stephens nominated pies and we were stuck we would either demand player and best pick (I.e your backup ruck) or if you continue to move up ladder, just walk the lad to the PSD.

I doubt the team would do the latter, the swans rarely fight to the death over trades, but getting a second rounder for a pick 5 after 2 years of development may be too much for the club to swallow.

It did, but:

"While the Magpies could move for the South Australian product, they would find some difficulty in landing a trade.

Collingwood are understood to be facing further strains in their salary cap that heavily impacted their list last year."

GW said there were some lingering salary cap issues but didn’t elaborate. What we know is this year we have the Treloar payout, the Beams payout, and the Phillips payout. What we don’t know is what level for Treloar and Beams and what impact there’ll be 2022 and beyond. We also hear that Maynards deal might also be significantly backended. I’d have thought our biggest issue on getting a trade done would be trade currency given we need vacant list spots for Daicos points as it is.

Future second conversation is dependent on a clubs finishing position. We're likely to again finish low making it at worst low 20s. Finishing low also means that our future first would be much too early. It's a different conversation if we were contending though and potentially looking at a pick in the mid 30s.

Huge news.....?? About what?

That they’re friends I assume given they spent so much time together at Hawthorn lol.

Edit: Stephens news is a bit exciting! Get around the kid high end talent struggling to get a look into a stacked Sydney midfield. Forget any salary cap concerns the only concerns over making it happen are his interest and trade capital with JDG now a must keep.

Also get a clue Rebuilder. He’s been the sub in 2 matches this year resulting in a combined 1 possession and his year 1 numbers were COVID impacted. They’re every bit as good as Poulter’s perhaps better considering Poulter has played exclusively on a wing.

There was no Phillips payout iirc, which is why we literally got nothing back for him from the Hawks.

The ongoing pressure they're referring to would be the Beams payout, which has to be finalised this year I think, and the Treloar payout which still had 2-3 years to run?

Cox's 500-600k is also an issue this year but obviously not next year.

Sidey more than likely has been back-ended (maybe with this mystery player-option for another year that Tom Browne has come up with), but I'd think Pendles' "% of TPP" deal is done and dusted too and I'd anticipate that he'll be on something more in line with a veteran who has the overall good of the team in mind next year, given how well he has been paid for the past 10 years.

It's possible that Maynard was back ended as well but even then he still wouldn't be on enough to exert that much pressure on the cap. DeGoey's 750-800k is obviously an issue but I'd expect that Wrighty will stand firm on him taking a hair cut on that deal next season, or he'll be out the door.

I think we're in better shape than is being hinted at with some big numbers to come off the books at the end of this year and there's just a bit of random, unfounded speculation on the part of the media, which has been fuelled a bit by Wrighty being evasive enough with his response to questions around our cap situation to get their little imaginations running wild.

I'm not disagreeing, but Tim Lane mentioned on 3AW Saturday pre-game a few weeks back he was at his local cafe in the eastern suburbs somewhere, and Wrighty and Evans were sharing a table not far away.

So a few get togethers in close proximity. I'm pretty sure then that they are thrashing out the finer details on a Ben King trade! 😉😝

In DeGoeys second year he played 20 senior games, kicked 16 goals and averaged a touch over 18 disposals. The only similarity between the two is the number they were drafted, which after 2 years in the system is far less relevant than actual performance.
