Hello Eagles fans!

The embedded resources below are kept up to date by the trade board mods (as much as possible – we are human after all). Enjoy!

Keys you may like to sticky this post & move it to the start of the thread (so the sticky post doesn't rotate if a post is deleted before it), or copy it to your draft thread if you have one.

Season 2023 is over and the AFL world turns its attention to the upcoming trade period and draft that us Eagles fans have been focusing on since about round 3

With the existing thread nudging 1,000 pages (pages, not posts) it’s time for a rollover

Key Dates :

October 6 (Friday) - Free Agency Period opens
October 6 - 8 (Fri-Sunday) - National Draft Combine
October 9 (Monday) - Trade Period opens
October 13 (Friday) - Free Agency Period closes
October 18 (Wednesday) - Trade Period closes
October 23 - November 10 - Trade Period for Draft picks only
November 20 (Monday) - Round 1 of National Draft
November 21(Tuesday) - Round 2 of National Draft to completion
November 22 (Wednesday) - PSD and Rookie Drafts

For those that might not have been paying attention here’s the current state of play as it pertains to West Coast :

List Changes -
• Retired : Hurn, Shuey, Naitanui
• Delisted : O’Neill, Foley, Petrevski-Seton, Clark, Winder(R), West(R)

Officially we have a total of 8 list spots available with a maximum of 7 being on the main list

Contracts Pending -
• Waterman (2 years), Witherden (1 year) and Culley (1 year) are all reported to have agreed to extensions but these have not been officially confirmed by the club
Edit : These contracts have now been confirmed by the club
• Trew hasn’t been delisted but remains in limbo as he hasn’t yet been offered an extension leaving him as the only uncontracted player on the list. If an extension isn’t forthcoming we’ll have an additional rookie spot available

Trade/FA Targets -
• Tyler Brockman has asked to be traded to WCE from Hawthorn with the club reportedly willing to walk him to the PSD if Hawthorn demand too high a price. Expectation is one of our picks in the 50’s should be sufficient
• Matt Flynn, a ruckman from GWS, is set to leave as an Unrestricted FA with WCE and Melbourne vying for his signature
• Dev Robertson is reportedly considering a 3 year contract offer from WCE to leave Brisbane but is yet to announce his intentions

There’s been no other players linked to a move west at this stage and no credible indication of any player requesting a trade away from West Coast

Our current draft hand is picks 1,20,34,39,53,58 and 76 (if needed) although these will change prior to the draft with 3 players (McKay - North, Gresham - Saints and Doedee - Adelaide) set to trigger compensation picks by changing clubs as Free Agents

Other than the trades referred to above, the focus on WCE leading into the draft will be whether or not we trade the prized No.1 draft pick universally expected to be the talented Harley Reid.

With no high profile trades across the competition as yet, the new home for Harley is likely to continue dominating discussions in the lead up to the draft. Unfortunately until we either trade pick 1 or call his name out on November 20 the debate is going to be front and centre

In due course, I’ll be setting up resource threads on draft rankings and individual players for posters to easily obtain information on draftees without having to wade through pages of back and forth speculation

So have at it with your wild trades and views on who we should/shouldn’t draft or trade for but be respectful towards others, even those who have a different viewpoint no matter how outlandish you feel it is

Rohan O’Brien to be on SEN with Gossage sometime between 6.00 and 8.00

As is his way, I doubt he gives too much away but it’ll be the first time since our season finished that we hear from anyone in a position of authority at the club

Should be worth a listen

FWIW, this is how I hope we approach the trade and draft period

• Flynn provides a relatively mature ruck option to support Williams and as a FA is a cheap addition to our ruck depth. Hopefully the lure of more consistent game time gives us the edge over Melbourne where he’ll be stuck behind Gawn in the same way he was stuck behind Briggs at GWS
• Brockman has already announced his intent to join West Coast and we should be able to negotiate a trade with either 53 or 58. As an alternative option, WCE_phil suggested using picks 39,53 and 58 to get Brockman and Hawthorn’s pick 30 - it’s a good option especially if Robertson joins us. The PSD remains an option if Hawthorn dig their heels in
• It’s unclear if Robertson will ask to leave Brisbane but if he does I’d be offering our F3 pick which if we finish bottom 4 will be in the 39-42 range

Assuming all the above happens we’d have 4 main list spots and picks 1,20,30 & 34 in the draft and no 3rd round pick next year.

If Robertson stays at Brisbane we keep our F3 and have an extra list spot to fill using pick 76 - that will end up in the 50’s as the draft isn’t expected to go deep and we could use that pick to match a bid on NGA draftee, Lance Collard, if he gets past pick 40.

Alternatively, we use our last pick on a slider/project pick in the hope of finding another Long or leave a spot for a train on player over the off season - maybe someone like Trey Ruscoe who could be delisted by Collingwood

As discussed in the OP, offers are expected to come for pick 1. There’s no obligation for us to commit to any trade nor is there any reason not to draft Harley Reid. It will be up to other clubs to put together a package of draft picks that puts us in a position to achieve a stronger overall draft outcome so it needs to be a high price. There’s also no rush as we can wait until the night of the draft to agree to any deal

The other picks we should use to fill the numerous gaps in our list with a focus on KPPs if they’re available. We should also be mindful of trade opportunities to split picks if they arise with a view to acquiring a future pick if we do trade our F3 for Robertson. Other posters are better informed on the specific players we should be considering as draftees

Once all that is done we also have the first pick in the Rookie Draft, perhaps a second pick as well depending on what happens with Zane Trew

Overall, we have a trio of trade targets that provide useful depth and a bit of needed maturity for minimal draft capital. We then have a solid grouping of draft picks to further boost the talent we’ve added over the last two years as the list transitions

Hope he comes out and states we're taking one to the draft.

Depends on what you consider pressure. Teams at the top and short of a flag are clearly under more pressure, say Port Adelaide?

Gossage just said he'd be on after 7 and they'd 'pin is straight on him', presuming #1.
Gossage is a journo the same way Dr. Pepper is a doctor.

Seems a nice enough bloke but have no idea how he fell into his career.

Ok, O'Brien said they're 'most likely' to keep pick 1.

Doesn't mean they won't trade but less likely at this stage.
Only trade if we are offered something special, which is what he has said all along.
The offers talked about in the media and trade radio (media I know) are not special offers!

ROB very reassuring here. Also totally rubbished flight risk re: Harley again, and didn't express particular interest in Curtin. Said they don't really weigh up if players are from WA, it's more of just a bonus for settling players into the club. Who knew?

He seemed to give pretty generic answers for the most part, wouldn’t take much from it. Gossage just asked if any of the picks traded for Tim Kelly were in this draft 😂

Has mornings with mark duffield been cancelled? Noticed at the wildcats game on friday that they were promoting hase and marto show and also scott and goss show but not mark duffield's.
