Good player by player summary at the bottom. Pleasing to see Rounds got a mention with four goals.

It proved to be a successful black and white Saturday last weekend with the AFL side enjoying a strong win against Port Adelaide in Mt Gambier while the VFL Magpies dominated the Bendigo Bank Cats in a practice match at Gosch’s Paddock.
In the lead up to the club’s return to Victoria Park next month, Collingwood’s VFL side has scheduled several hitouts to ready itself for the season.
Under the guidance of head coach Gavin Brown for the third successive season, all eyes were on Sean Rusling and American-recruit Shae McNamara, both players engaging in match firsts.
For Rusling it was his first hitout of the year after overcoming a hip complaint during the preseason and for McNamara, it was his first-ever competitive match against an opposition.
Since the acquisition of the athletic American in the 2009 AFL Draft, the 24-year-old has shown remarkable development in his knowledge and skill of the game.
To the delight of supporters and coaching officials, both players got through the match unscathed and should play their second practice match this Friday 19 March at Gosch Paddock scheduled for 5 pm against the Coburg Tigers.

The Magpie defence, led by Jarrad Blight and VFL-listed player Cory Millard, held the Tigers goalless for the first term and allowed only eight majors for the game.

At the other end of the ground it was Chris Dawes who inflicted serious damage with seven majors while Luke Rounds contributed four as a half forward.
Collingwoodfc.com.au spoke with development manager Luke Beveridge about each AFL-listed player’s performance in the 61-point win over the Cats.
Final Score
Collingwood:
5.1 7.9 12.14 16.18 (114)
Geelong: 0.2 2.2 3.3 8.5 (53)
AFL-listed players
2. Sean Rusling: Good contest across halfback. Had solid presence and his involvements were really encouraging. Needs a few more games under his belt to reach peak fitness.
14. Anthony Corrie: Very, very good first half. Real penetration in his kicking. Covered a lot of ground and played a terrific game as an outside midfielder.
17. Dayne Beams: Very good through the midfield. Won a lot of clearances. Got nearly every ball out of the centre in the third quarter. Was conspicuous with his ball use by foot.
27. Jarrad Blight: Good consistent four quarters. Contested really strongly in the air. Off halfback and wing. Won the loose ball with aggression. He was close to getting a game in the AFL side in the preseason competition but had a few minor hiccups regarding injury which didn’t allow him to be sustained in the mix.
29. Ryan Cook: Quieter day from Ryan playing in various positions.
31. Chris Dawes: Excellent game. Kicked five goals in the first half. A seven goal haul is a real breakthrough game from Chris.
37. Luke Rounds: Very good small forward game from Luke. Kicked four goals. Took a couple of courageous marks going back with the flight.
38. Scott Reed: Got through unscathed. Controlled his position at halfback. Contributed well with a fair bit of run. Worked well with Rusling.
41. Simon Buckley: Quieter day from Simon. Played mostly on the wing.
43. Jaxson Barham: Solid game without being outstanding. Possession rate was OK and used the ball reasonably well.
44. Lachlan Keeffe: Bit under done. Contributed mostly at centre-half back. His coordination and management of his teammates was really good.
46. Tristan Francis: Played small forward. Provided his usual tenacious contest.
47. Jarryd Blair: Like Dayne extremely solid. Really high possession rate. Defensive and attacking run was terrific. Instigated a number of our forward moves from congestion.
50. Shae McNamara: Good learning day. Played forward, ruck and down back. Did some things well and will learn from his mistakes. It was another baby step.

I know its an early call but from what I've seen of Simon Buckley so far I've not been impressed. For mine Jarryd Blair is ahead of him and it would seem youngsters Blight and Rounds are closing in on him.

He needs to lift his game if he wants to be part of our seniors side in 2010 and not end up as another depth player and eventual list clogger. He had a lot of confidence before preseason that he would be playing lots of senior footy this year but unfortunately I can't see him making the cut.

On a positive note, its great to see Luke Rounds kicking four. It will be huge for his confidence. He does not have a high possession rate at the moment and he is still very young but he has a beautiful kick and a huge amount of potential. I look forward to watching his continued development through season 2010.

Also great to see Dawes kick seven although reports from those that were at the game not too many of his marks were taken over head. If he is to make in the big league he needs to develop a strong overhead mark. Taking chest marks on the lead are not good enough for a man of his size but a great result none-the-less.

I'm extremely excited about Dayne Beams this year. The report says that he won just about every clearance in the 3rd quarter, much the same as he did in Saints NAB Cup game. The guy is all class and an absolute clearance machine who I can see elevating himself into elite status in the next few years.

Lastly, Jarryd Blair needs to be promoted and given an opportunity at the top level when the chance presents itself. Forget the fact that he is small - IRRELEVANT! The guy can play football and I hazard a guess that if he had a physical body that looked like Chris Judd but had the same leg speed/overhead prowess as he does now and was actually producing the same numbers as he is now he would have been given more opportunity. He is having to work a lot harder and produce a lot better than some of his counterparts in order to get recognition. I can't wait to see Tony Francis MkII running around in the AFL at some stage this year. He deserves it...

RE: Buckley, I think that is a fair enough assessment. All we really gave away for him was a late draft pick, so there's really not a huge amount of pressure on him to perform. He did show a bit at Melbourne IMO and he will be given the opportunity to develop, but if he is behind people like Blair, Blight etc that is good for us in the long run because it means our highly rated kids will be given opportunities if they deserve them in time.. if MM lays off the crack pipe, of course ;)

What are the chances that he can do this? Can the skill be acquired if it's not innate?

I think he has the body shape but it's possibly a confidence thing, he has to learn how to use his body in contested situations to his advantage - he's built in a way to play the part but does not act that way as a rule.
Until he addresses that he will not be able to succeed at the top level - IMO.

As Luke Beveridge says, it could be a real breakthrough game for him.

Might just give him the confidence needed for him to realise he can impose himself on a game.

When and Where did Beveridge say that?

A fault of youth then, let's hope.

Was encouraged to see the photo of Rusling with no signs of having his shoulders taped. Maybe he's starting to get some confidence back in his body.

Also, - Dave - apologies, just realise it wasn't you who posted the article with Beveridge's comments.

Hey Dave do you have any highlight vids of Dawes at VFL/AFL level?? Would be interesting to look at Dawes overhead marking in isolation and see whether there may be a technical reason for his poor marking skills.

Don't have any - Guess it could give me something to do when I fix my Computer

No worries Dave, thought you might have one on hand.

Well there is not a lot. Though in his Debut game vs Saints he took a Few

Great video that one. How good was Thomas in it?? Loved watching Brown with a bit of confidence too. Dawes had two great overhead marks in that video, leading fast and straight at the ball and taken both pretty cleanly well over shoulder height with pressure. Juggled the second a little but not too bad. Exactly the stuff you'd like to see more of from Dawes. Really hope Dawes comes good, would be huge for the team if he becomes a good player for us.

I seriously reckon he can do it, it makes no sense that on some occasions he can mark everything in sight and on others he plays like Stevie Wonder. Got to be confidence, IMHO.

It can be fixed although Dawes problem is different to most who start out poor overhead and it is rare that someone goes from being terrible to being very strong.

Quintin Lynch was terrible overhead, he is still not great but no where near as bas as he was. His problem was the most common where players go to hard at the ball and as such kinda squeeze the ball out of their hands. He IIRC got the nick name "hands of stone" because of this.

Trav was no where near as bad as Lynch but had a similar problem with the hard hands.

Dawes has a totally different problem, it seems to be a judgement and co-ordination problem as much as anything. It could come down to a few things

1. Confidence, the fact that going overhead is a last resort for Dawes means he goes up late and as such doesn't get to get correct position (even in the over head marks he does take it is often somewhere around face height which is just above that in between mark. Going at the ball in this region can get a bit awkward.)

2. Eyes on the ball, I haven't got anything to back this up but on at least a couple of occasions he has come pretty close to not even getting hands on basic overhead marking attempts and often juggles even uncontested overhead marks. You'd like to think that is because he isn't watching the ball for long enough and not a co thing. The first can be fixed the later can't. He has very good hand eye at ground level so I will assume the first.

3. Reading the flight of the ball, touched on it in the first point but when going overhead he can often get in that awkward spots. I think this is because he wants to take it on the chest and sometimes in trying to make sure he gets the ball overhead he runs to far under the flight.

^ Trav's biggest problem was always trying to take chest marks when he simply didn't have the separation on his opponent. It took him several years of senior (AFL) football to iron it out and get the confidence to take it in the dukes.

Re. Beams, I was fascinated by some photographs of him posted in an earlier thread. There were several of these involving ruck contests and, at every one of these, Beams seemed to be about 3m closer to the centre of the contest than any other player (ours or theirs). Fair to say that he's pretty keen to be first to the footy perhaps?
