Fascinating, Brisbane fans mentioning how much better their midfield is in a main board thread.

Looks to have done them so much good. We're so bad that Bontempelli gets tagged, they've got so much depth that Taylor crabs around picking up cheapies and doing nothing with them.

How much did they beat us by in this game, could somebody remind me?
The same midfield that is ranked 18th in contested possessions? The same midfield that is ranked 14th in clearances? The same midfield that can only get the ball inside 50 on average 17th in the comp? And for what it's worth we beat them in all the relevant midfield stats last week, except hit outs.
Those Brions make me laugh :p Remember when they were up and about on the main board at the start of this year telling everyone they could that they were certainties to make the eight :D

I seriously don't fathom how they reckon they have a gun midfield when like you said that gun midfield is 18th for contested possessions and 14th for clearances. Those are the two critical stats because 40% of the game can be accounted for how well you do in contested possessions.

What I saw last week was absolutely no structure and confusion about the style of game they should be playing, paired with utter dysfunction in front of the ball. Not convinced their issue is related to on-field personnel, to be honest.

Their stars are good individual players but without team work and/or structure, pretty average results.

They're a better side than their current form reflects.

And on paper, their midfield is magnificent.

I just found it amusing that the sheer mention of Bontempelli copping a tag was shot down with "our midfield has better quality/depth" in spite of a 72 point defeat a mere 6 days ago.

June 20. 2015. 17 minutes and 23 seconds into the 3rd quarter. A date which will live in infamy—Jake String was suddenly and deliberately attacked by a hyperbolic buffoon in the commentary box (not him, the other one) and saddled with forever more the ridiculous moniker of "THE PACKAGE!!!!"

Guess who just got around to watching the replay of last weeks game?

Same commentary team again this week?

I agree with a lot of the points you suggest here TNP but I have for many occasions on this board stated my objections to having Stringer become a more permanant midfielder and I am still very strongly in favour of the role Bev has him currently doing. That is playing 85 - 90% as a forward target and pinch hitting at centre ballups where is also very dangerous. I think Stringer can be a bit inconsistent with his marking sometimes he drops ones he should take and other times he can be very strong in the air. But Stringers main weakness IMO is that he has little regard for what his opponent is doing. Stringer does as Stringer pleases (and as much as I love it, its the main reason why I sometimes fly down to melbourne for games) this trait isn't a great one to have as a midfielder who often needs to take special care for their opponent at stoppages particularly in our back 50. Whereas in the forward line defenders are so Stringer consence really they aren't going to be in a position to cause any damage offensively whatsoever.

We have so many good inside mids (some of the best contested young mids in the game). We don't need to take our main avenue to goal away from his natural home, particularly when he can and will form one of the most dangerous tall forward combinations with T.Boyd in the game. Opposition clubs will be leaping for joy if he is getting 25 + disposals as a mid rather than the 15 - 20 he can get in the forward line plus the scoreboard damage he creates.

Jarryd Roughead is really the game he should mould his on. 85 - 90% forward (some of that time deep some further up the ground) but also using his ability at the centre square on occasion.
Since when has Pendlebury, Fyfe, Ablett, Hannerbury and the good midfielders ever worried about their direct opponent ? apart from trying to break their tag. Stringer if if gets the tank to spend most time in the middle would have players worried about him with his clearance work.

Jakey will have to take to the field with a pair of socks down his dacks this week to live up to the name :D

TBH I seriously feared Wally, Bont and McCrae would become targets for the opposition mids once Libba went down but he's responded magnificently. He's got captain written all over him. His run down tackle and goal when Brisbane were storming all over us in the third quarter show what he is like when the heat is on.
That's a point everybody should acknowledge. he is better then most of the football world realize, and some of us for that matter.

Seems we're still having trouble convincing our own fans that Tom Boyd is worth the investment.

Boyd had kicked 4 straight to this stage when he took a mark inside 50 and lined up for his 5th early in the 4th quarter. Was sitting behind a lady and heard her mumble "He'd better kick this". Made a note of it and after he missed I asked why.

"Cos it's a bloody expensive point!" she snapped back. I asked her if the 4 goals he had kicked already were good value for money.

"No! He's a waste of our salary cap!" I replied "Really? You don't want a no.1 draft pick Full Forward locked away at our club for the next 7 years? He's quite possibly the best thing that's happened to our club in a loooooong time."

At which point Stringer kicked that beautiful goal from 50 on his left peg, and she smugly turned around and said "HE'S the best thing that's happened to our club."

While I found it hard to disagree, I said "He's a very nice player, has a lot to offer and will be a star of the future, but how well do you think he'd be able to do it playing on the no. 1 defender week in, week out?"

"Doesn't matter, he's better now than Boyd will ever be!"

OK love, don't worry about how team structures work or anything like that.
Don't care if she was a dogs supporter, i would have simply said , you have no f#cking idea

Would loved to have done that but we need all the members we can get, can't afford to go pissing off the ones we have.
