He looks a big strong kid, can take a grab and good at ground level. Another left footer.

SNAPSHOT: “A strong-marking key forward who can also roll through the ruck, Xavier Walsh has terrific upside, albeit limited exposure at high levels.”

A prospect from left field over in Western Australia is Xavier Walsh, who was part of the state’s array of tall forward options this year. The East Perth spearhead has developed steadily over the last two seasons, playing as an over-ager in the 2022 Under 16 National Championships and only making his WAFL Colts debut in Round 4 this year. A combination of injury and suspension prevented the 18-year-old from making a greater splash in his top-age campaign, but recruiters were left pleased by their first impressions in Colts Super Round. AFL interest in Walsh was demonstrated in his invite to the National Draft Combine, despite only playing one game in representative colours during 2023. He ran out the season with East Perth, booting 13 majors in eight games and being held goalless just once as the Royals missed out on finals.

NATIONAL COMBINE

Xavier Walsh
State: Western Australia
State League Club: East Perth
Community Club: Mt Lawley Inglewood
Date of Birth: 06/09/05
Height: 195cm

Left-footed tall forward who had an interrupted year with injury, but left a positive impression with his strong contested marking. Has shown he is capable of performing at both ends of the ground. Played eight games at under 18 level for East Perth averaging 10.3 disposals and 3.6 marks as well as kicking 13 goals. Represented his state against the Allies at the National Championships, where he took four marks and kicked a goal from his eight disposals. His natural leap was impressive at the national Draft Combine with a running vertical jump of 87cm.

Kevin Sheehan’s 2023 AFL Draft top prospects: WA Tall forwards and rucks

Played down back in defence during the championships against the Allies.

Could be a great utility player forward/back at 195cm, 89kg with the potential to grow a bit more.

Reminds me a bit of Damon White before Prospect Oval buggered his ankle.

Strong mark. Good leap. Good foot speed. Can play forward, back and ruck at a pinch.
Downside is lacks endurance - and we all know what happened to Sam Hayes 🥺

We needed a 4th ruck as a project type. Damn Essendrugs for picking Vigo 😡

Reckon he would have flourished here with Dante, but that's life. Plus would have been a good feel story after having no show of re-uniting the Duursma brothers.
Walsh "kinda" fills that gap in our list.

Given there wasn't a lot leftover at our picks this year, we at least picked for the proper positional spots on our list that were wanting. Time will tell if any of them are good enough.

Maybe the basketballer Zakk Wylde was hinting at will provide that project ruck. Unless he's a Patty Mills clone ;)
