Results from Carlton's b&f:

1. Heath Scotland - 32
2. Eddie Betts - 25
3. Chris Judd -29
4. Brock Maclean - 26
5. Marc Murphy 25
6. Andrew Carazzo - 28
7. Kade Simpson - 28

The fact that there is not one player under the age of 25 in the top 7 of their b&f count has to be a huge concern. This is a club who in recent years has spent more time on the bottom of the ladder and had greater access to high draft picks than any other. Where are they? Why haven't any of them developed into the players that many thought they would come. Whose fault is it? The recruiters? The development staff? We should be seeing a side ready to peak and have a genuine tilt at the flag, yet instead all that exists is a veteran list on the cusp of collapse. Is this failure to develop youth now a crisis, and if so, how can Carlton go about changing what seems to be an entrenched culture of mediocrity?

Discuss.

And yet Ratten is somehow a martyr who didn't deserve to be given the flick.

Carlton are in the window now. They should have finished top 4 last year, they had to this year, they know the clock is ticking hence they're taking drastic steps.

I'd say abuot 60% of their senior players had poor years.
Scotland's season was probably his worst in 3? years - and he's got a B&F to show for it.

They do need to target some youth in a few areas, but it's not all doom & gloom; only 3 guys (albeit all pretty good players) are likely to go in the immediate future.

What are you on about Scotland had a very good year. Funny most the criticism is coming from Essendon people..You guys can really talk...

25 year olds aren't exactly veterans on the verge of collapse. Save your hysteria for Collingwood

So of our potential "star" juniors we have:

Chris Yarran (significant time spent sidelined)
Matthew Kreuzer (recovering from knee injury, had some exceptional games)
Kane Lucas (played well early on but fell out of form)
Mitch Robinson (Injury plagued, consistent niggles)
Lachlan Henderson (Injury)
Jeremy Laidler (Played very well early but injured for year)
Matthew Watson (KPD early in career, played some very good games)
Levi Casboult (Really hit some form late, very few games, recovering from PCL)
Bryce Gibbs (Down year, performed better late)
Luke Mitchell (injured early)

So of all those potential place getters, 7 were injured, one is a KPD (who was injured for last 5 games) and the other 2 underperformed.

"star" implies potential BnF' place getters

25 is the youngest and there are only 2 of them. To brush this off as hysteria is just naive.

In that case yes - if Murphy, Betts and Brock all break down in the next 12 months and are forced to retire at 25-26 then we are probably in a bit of trouble list wise.

Not sensationalist from the OP at all.

you look stupid when you comment and have not seen a game.
Do you think Judd had a good year? Walker? Waite? Jamison? Kreuzer? Murphy, Gibbs? Carrazzo? Etc

I reckon a solid majority of those blokes (some through injury, some just form) had poor years, for how good they are/have been/should be. Scotland stood out more, but in a worse side.
Just my opinion, no need to have a crack.

we have been guilty of not developing young players as much as we should (i think in 2011 we had only 1 or 2 debutants), but this year saw the introduction of a few young players who will guide us into the next 10 years or so.

hopefully Mick continues to do this, his comment that he is 'satisfied' with our list is a good sign for it happening

it is slightly worrying how many of our top tier of players are getting on a bit though, but apart from Scotland I don't see any of them retiring or having drastic dips in ability any time soon.

What I wanted when I created this thread was a constructive discussion to address the crisis of youth at the Carlton Football Club. What a didn't want was a collage of excuses from Carlton supporters on the state of their list. If you don't want to face reality go back to the Carlton board. We're problem solving here!

Hard to have a good year when you're injured for most of it

I think they need a key forward to stand up (or to trade one in). Missing out on Cloke, Q Stick and possibly Tippett shows they may be struggling to get someone in (unless they are looking to trade one in or just go it again next season with Waite, Kreuzer, Casboult, Rowe and Hampson).

Outside of their top end draft picks, they have some great success with rookie pick ups - perhaps there is a hidden gem KPF out there?

And?

They've drafted a heck of a lot of talls in recent years - unsurprisingly, they're taking a few years to come on stream.
The only three they'd be concerned about are Lucas (hard to tell whether injury's the issue or talent), Yarran (poor this year, but very good last year) and Kerr (who was a late pick to start with) - you'd expect them to have cracked on more than they have.
Majority of talls do nothing for 2-3 years, non issue IMHO.

The club had a shit year on-field. When this happens then it's bound to be the more experienced players that try and lead by example and perform better. Look no further than B&S's list a few posts up to show we have plenty of young talent waiting in the reserves. BTW 3 of the 7 you posted have at the very least another 4-5 years of quality football left.

Not all that concerned.

Carlton best 10 mids / smalls are - Murphy, Judd, Carrazzo, Gibbs, Yarran, Betts, Simpson, Scotland, Robinson, Garlett.
I don't see an age issue there. Top shelf.
Carlton's best 10 talls KPP are - Jamison, Kreuzer, Waite, Henderson, Hampson, Laidler, Casboult, Watson, Mitchell and McInness
Add youngsters and depth like Bootsma, Buckley, Rowe, Lucas, Ball, Davies, Touey, Duigan, Warnock, Walker and the list is young and top 4 material.

Umm... yes... that's my point.... not all doom and gloom, a lot of guys just had shit years, for a variety of reasons, and should get better.

Always worth reading the post before ranting & railing

I know, mate, not having a crack at you, only indirectly at those who want to judge the year of a player who's barely been able to get on the park. Sorry if it came across like that.

You asked a question, you were given an answer (no crisis of youth at Carlton).
Don't ask the question if you're going to sulk about the answer
