you have depth issues then?

Take 3 of our best backmen out. With Waite. Hampsen. Curnow. Robinson. O'hailpen all out I think any team would struggle to replace those players. You shouldn't talk with the injuries your teams had. Injuries to 2 or 4 players are able to be "glossed" over (like the pies and cats can do) but 8 out of our best 22 are out. that's hard to replace. We have depth but I think we came to just show up today. Take nothing from the eagles who were shper, but we clearly thought it was gonna happen for us. It's good for these things to happen.
And to that clown who said we lost to last years wooden spooners, we've also beaten last years runners up. Last year and this year are 2 different seasons buddy...

They are, when fully fit, a second tier contender. Not in the same class as Geelong or Collingwood atm.

They will not win a premiership as currently constructed.

funny, when Warnock was out - Carlton supporters would tell you how he was a key out. Now that spud Hampson is out, and he is a key out, despite being replaced by Warnock!

You must want to play 3 rucks like the Bombers??

So much shit being written here it's impossible to know where to start. It's like the Bay FFS.

The fact is we lost all the wrong types of players you'd want to lose against WC (athletic ruckman, tall/medium defenders and midfield grunt) all in one week, and it fell like a house of cards from there. Still should've won, but on top of that we had a shit day, as every team does. The team played shit, West Coast played well (and despite what the more ignorant flogs will tell you, they have the tools to go deep into September), move on to next week. The hype (which I might add was 99% coming from OUTSIDE the club) can cool down a bit now, and that can only be a good thing.

Carlton's forward line has to be restructured. Betts and Gartlett are fine but that is more than enough small players. Walker is never going to be a premiership winning FF and Henderson is a better defender than forward. Warnock is just shit and Kreuzer may be the answer but there is not enough evidence either way with him. Carlton desperately needs a quality key forward or another of many September heart aches will occur this year and the next couple as well.

Waite is integral to our structure and Setanta if nothing else knows where the goals are. Get Waite into the team and suddenly Henderson and Walker move one down in the pegging order and have an easier time.

Waite is merely average. Not good enough IMO.

Pound for pound close to carlton's best player I reckon.

Garlett could do trying to kick on his left foot sometimes.

Was it just me or did west coast get r*ped by the umpires today?
In the first half it was disgraceful. The second half it was bad both ways but that first half was a joke, they favoured Carlton so much yet they were still down by 5 goals at the half!

Lol dont forget the 2 goals WC got directly from throws, one in the 3qtr killing any Carlton momentum

I do agree it was bad both ways though, but dont act like you copped the worse of it cause we got a few extra highs on the wing

It was a good win by West Coast, they came to play and once we lost Jamo it was always going to be hard. We are probably a touch shorter than we want, but we counter that with a running game. Most times our running game can overcome a tall team however today it didnt

Our game is effective against Geelong but it will struggle against the Pies, so we'll see how we go later in the year

Not really stressing over the loss, it brought some attention to areas we need to improve and we have 10 or so weeks to do that. With some quality inclusions over the next few weeks and a couple of beatable opponents I think this will be a distant memory leading into one of the biggest H&A games in 3 weeks against Collingwood

Well done West Coast, your a quality side and not many people have doubted you this year, but I think our Top 4 spot is pretty safe and we'll still give a rumble come September

Only thing thats changed from this week to last week is our win/loss ratio

Can't see WC not making the top 4 with a draw of - Geelong, Fremantle, Richmond, Essendon and Adelaide at home and St Kilda, Bulldogs, Melbourne and Brisbane away. If they keep this form up I can't see them losing more than 1 or 2. One of Hawthorn and Carlton will have to bow out.

it's only 1 game so harsh to draw any huge conclusions from it. i am however less bullish about the blues after watching it. i was all over a coll v carl GF before today but there were some bad signs for carl out there today

and the bottom line remains that carl have not beaten any of the other teams in the current top 5 this year. don't think they've played the hawks but they have been easily handled by both coll and wce and while probably unlucky in the end v geel they didn't get over the line despite starting the game like a house on fire

today's game could easily have decided 4th spot. carl still have to play both coll and haw in the run home while the weagles have only geel to play and that is at subi in any event so they will probably win it. with only 2 pts separating them now there is every probability that the eagles are now going to land 4th spot which totally changes the face of the finals if they do, both for the top and bottom half of the 8. imagine if carl finish 5th and have to go into an elimination final straight up? all of the demons of the last 2 seasons will be in their face straight up. will be very interesting

If WCE beat the Cats then they would be more than deserving of top 4

We havent played Hawks yet, but the Geelong game was a decent indicater of where our best is at, which is a kick away from the best. We need to play at our best of course, hopefully the big stage will bring that out in us. The loss is great on paper for the 'havent beaten top teams' argument but anybody who watches the game and says Carlton cant compete and beat the top teams needs a lesson in football (Geelong game that is)

Top 4 is our goal, but at the moment playing an elim against Melbourne and getting the winning a final monkey off our back would be a good feeling

Its been a positive year for Carlton and we have exceeded expectations already, dont forget most still has us finishing 7th-8th at the start of the year. We still have some growing to do, and probably a 2 year window starting next year with our current good players at their best

To the people saying the Blues haven't beaten any of the other top 4 sides they have played Hawthorn also lost to the other top 4 sides in 08 in the minor round but beat them all in the finals.

I wouldn't write Carlton off as a premiership contender just yet.

Really struggled today with a few of those outs (most notably Jamison) but I don't think it's an indication of how we're traveling overall.

West Coast are a genuine Top 4 team IMO and can challenge the best on their day. Got the match ups right today and that went a long way toward the victory. They've also got a fair bit of depth through the middle and that certainly helped them counter the fight back in the third.

I don't think a loss is the worst result for us. After a few cruisy weeks we need a bit more motivation and hopefully this is one of those reminders that we need to keep working the full 24 weeks, or we'll be shown up.

Also missed the hardness of Robinson and Duigan. Robbo in particular provides us with a big midfield presence and he's taken some of Murphy and Judd's workload in at the stoppages.

The match next week will be interesting.

Really not a big deal. The Eagles by the end of the year will be top 4. Possibly even 3rd if they can topple us in a few weeks. Carlton have made big strides this year and even on a down day looked dangerous at times.

I love how Carlton supporters have been telling us for the last few weeks that we can't use injuries as an excuse. Now, after a humiliating loss it's, "But we had injuries!!"

You played a team on friday night with worse injuries than yours. And you were completely insipid. Injuries aren't your only problem. We were nowhere near as bad, even with 6 of our best 22 out.

Far too early to write the Blues off after one game against very good opposition. Write us off after we've fallen in a heap for a prolonged period like the Bombers.
