Have been in and out of this thread a bit. Been quoted a bit in here, but I'll make it really simple for you.

Given Carlton wanted 2 x 1st rounders for Gibbs would you be happy trading Milera + Lever for Gibbs?

Both were recent 1st round picks and representative of what we would have lost.

Simple answer for me is No.

Aw heafy, there is maths & numbers involved too

Not really its as simple as that. You wanted Gibbs, we had to give up 2 x 1st rounders. I ask you Sanders would you be happy with giving up Milera & Lever for Gibbs?

No but I would have given up Doedee and Galluci

Giving up on talent we haven't even seen yet?

Lets see how that changes in a couple years time.

So you are happy to risk giving up on talent that could be as good as Lever & Milera for a 28 year old mid who prob has 2 seasons at most of his peak football left and doesn't guarantee us a flag?

Correct it doesnt hurt as much when you dont know if they are good or duds

Said it before it would no doubt weaken our team in coming years but strengthen it this year.

Are we a chance this year?

So what happens if the Gibbs experiment didn't work and we got no closer to a flag?

Then we go on to see those two draft picks become absolute stars. How much does that hurt then?

Then we can drop to the bottom and reload with some top 10 draft picks maybe come last a coupel of years and get a couple of number 1's and see what we can do

Those draft picks aren't as good if we have given a future pick to carlton.

Cool, lets finish 6th again for the next 15 years.
Wait on we have already done that.

Try and win the thing now, and if we miss and bottom out. At least we went down swinging.
West Coast, Hawthorn and Geelong have all been sh1t during periods of the 2000s

That's why he's willing to give it up. Easy to say it now. In two years we're going to be so glad we didn't give them away.

Who says we are going to do that?

From what we saw on the weekend and what we have seen pre-season it looks as if we have improved again.

Also that was minus Brad Crouch, Tex, lever, Cheney etc.

But no no no its not possible we improve internally. Can only be done with the magical bullet from outside the club.

It hasnt worked for us for 15 years, and every premier in that time has had a big name recruit or two.
Even took us Darren Jarman to get across the line

You do know the odds of winning a premiership are stacked against you?

Why burn our future on something that maybe improves our chances by a couple of %. If that.

Also bottoming out is no guarantee of success either. Richmond, Melbourne, Carlton etc have been doing it for the best part of a decade.

Our club's supporters couldn't handle bottoming out. They bitch and moan when we make finals and come 6th.

Who did Geelong bring in to win them a flag thats big name? Hawks? Swans? West Coast? Brisbane? Port? Do you want me to keep going?

All they have done is add role players to fill gaps. Just like we have done with Lynch, Jenkins, Betts etc.

Darren Jarman was actually seen as a finals flop before he came to the Crows. He had never performed in finals previously.

You have to be kidding me......... have to be. You are calling these big names?

You have no idea. These are all role players, who mind you, they did not have to pay 2 x 1st rounders for.

You do also realise what a BIG time player is?

PS Gibbs is not a big time player ;)

On this same logic wouldn't Menzel, Betts, Lynch, Jenkins, Hampton egc. all count?

Maybe i went over board,
The Dogs absolutely sold the farm for Boyd.
Hawks did the same for Burgoyne and how can you say that Lake and Gibson aren't big time?

Brad Ottens was mega for Geelong in their 3, likewise Mal Michael and Alistair Lynch, again who was over paid by the Lions.
Trent Croad cost the Hawks a top 10 pick (Something we wouldnt have parted with for Gibbs)

What about Barry Hall Gavin Wanganeen and Darryl Wakelin? All scrubbers as well?

Froma Crow point of view Eddie is the only one in the same category as any of those mentioned here when signed.

Doesn't suit his arguement

Betts is the equivalent of any of those and was a big risk $$$ wise when we grabbed him. Most looked at us weird when we paid $500k pa for him. Now it looks as if we got the bargain of the century. Also a FA so paid nothing.

Betts should give you the confidence and faith in the club they are able to identify top talent and get them at the best price. That includes salary and trade value.

You think we should just remain competitive, we are very good at staying competitive I think teh club enjoys staying competitive keep the crowds up and sponsors. that makes you coin

Particularly given the reputations of a lot of blokes were only enhanced after reaching their new clubs. Gibson, Hale, Gunston, McEvoy, Rhys Shaw, Josh Kennedy were at best not world beaters and certainly for some weren't getting a game at their original clubs.

It's pretty simple, Gibbs was worth more to a struggling Carlton last year than he was to us. End of this year it might be different and the asking price will be a lot more palatable.

It would want to be he will be a year older, will clubs like Melbourne, St kilda and GWS continue on their improvement and out do our improvement. We ask the question of these clubs becauise they havwe a number of top 10 picks
