What's the go with changing current contracts in a POSITIVE way? Can it be done if both club and player agree to it and signed off on by the AFL?

Say we're sitting 2m behind the minimum cap for the year, we're not going to say... "Hey Dec, Sign on for a year at 2m?" to meet that minimum cap.

Could we say, go to every player at the club and offer them a 50k bonus for the year?

TPP amount is the greater of new contract or old contract, this is basically what it means to bring contracts forward. If you have Player A who is on 250k for 2018, 2019 and 2020 for example, you can renegotiate it to be 500k in 2018 and 125k in 2019 and 2020. However, the TPP amount in 2019 and 2020 will still be 250k.

So it is not good for bringing forward someone who has an existing contract. What it is good for is if you have Player B who is on 250k in 2017 and you are renegotiating their contract, you can offer them 500k in 2018 and 125k in 2019 and 2020 so you have the capacity to have more space in future years.

There is, however, a limit that the AFL allows for bringing contracts forward. What there isn't a limit on is offering players new front-loaded contracts.

We will have players coming out of contract this year which we will likely front-load offers in new deals presented to them so we are paying minimal for them longer-term.

The problem is, we are basically attempting to compete in a competition with a player pool that isn't worth the salary cap, it isn't a good situation to be in and we have been in this boat for a few years already. The potential space is irrelevant if you can't lure anyone worthwhile or the younger players you develop never achieve a high enough standard that warrant more money.

Fiddling the books for an advantage is the least of our concerns, creating decent talent is our major concern.

I cant remember the Brisbane players by name. even though I watch them a lot. Bolded ones are the ones I'd only be interested in.

Its why I think JK is still in our plans as I dont see much else upsetting being in the position to change that.

There is no way in the world we will get a priority pick, ever. With a healthy list, organic improvement, and a better draw, I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see us in contention for 8th spot come august next year.

Its funny when they are all laughing because with so much $$ we are going to upset other clubs....even if we don't speak or target any the clubs will make sure they are giving their players more than possibly intended.

Yep we will be in the lot that will.

But I expect Roco to be one of them not suggesting that.

I won't make any calls yet until after trade period, (although this kind of is one) but based on the current list and with improvement from players and drop offs from some (law of averages), I expect floating around the 8-12 mark as I think that bunch will be close again.

It is very easy, because we have good young players we "think" will be with us for 5+ years, we can give someone who we would otherwise given a 3 year deal a 5 year deal and basically move the majority of the last 3 years of that contract into the first 2, or part of it into just 2018.

The problem comes down to what are you going to do with the war chest, we are effectively going into another season with far less top end talent than other clubs, we basically failed to perform this year because we lacked that star firepower, overall, our grunt numbers were pretty good most of the season. We are potentially going to just be a club that is shuffling papers rather than in the business to win premierships if all we are doing is massaging the war chest.

Our priority has to be youth development and excellence, our system isn't producing good enough footballers and we aren't naturally replacing those lost by time. We need to start turning some of our gun recruits into a Kelly or a Martin, we can't have everyone we recruit end up B-grade. We can't rely on other clubs to develop talent.
