That was one of the worst ones all night. I looked at the Cats supporters next to me and said "that's just f'ing ridiculous".

The crowd wasn't even really calling for it either which is what often sucks the umpires in to making those bad deliberate calls.

Ugh....ugly night of football, but not all bad. Beamsy might take a little while to really gel in our midfield and some guys like Phillips, Stephenson and Maynard need a good kick up the ass.

For now I'll peg it down to blowing out the cobwebs. If we play like this the next 2 weeks though I'd be seriously disappointed.

Getting Moore and Elliot back and them being 2 of our best players tonight is a massive positive.

It was a slippery night and full of errors but some of your guys were much cleaner with the ball and we were generally smashed around the contest.

Again though, I just hope it's a better overall game next time as we've had plenty of great matches in the last 10 years. I always look forward to our games.

It’s funny, there’s always something notable about a Cats-Pies game.

2007 - Pies somehow come within a kick in a PF after we have just been destroying everyone all year, and IN BETWEEN TWO 100 POINT FINALS WINS!!
2008 - flog us by 15 goals in a home and away season where literally no one else beats us
2011 - Pies literally don’t drop a game to anyone bar the cats.... who beat them 3/3 including GF

Seemingly every season since: our biggest bogey team outside Sydney regardless of how both teams are going

Ugh. Just saw a disgraceful one that went to danger that led to a point at the start of the last.

Thing is we haven’t spent 12 years doing it. We’ve spent a week doing it.
Bastardization post if I ever saw one. That post is as Honest as Tough Man Tony abbott.

You only spent a week doing it. I Disagree. I get p***ed off about that stupid thread about the so Called "Premiership standard". You have to score 100 points a game and conceded no more than 86 points a game.

Only one side scored on average more than 100 points a game: Melbourne at 104.5 points a game.

Your Cats averaged 93 points a game and concede 70 points a game last season. yes a High scoring team indeed

Ross Lyon teams have averaged 72 and 73 the last two seasons.
In his 12 seasons in charge of AFL teams, he has managed two seasons that..... snicker..... ‘dwarfed’ our supposedly poor scoring 2018:

At St Kilda’s peak, he coaxed out two seasons that reaped:
94/96 per game.

We ‘struggled’ with 93 per game last season.... 4th best in the league. And we had the best defence.

It’s like a basketball fan trying to assess Jordan or James and tagging them on their defence. Well yes clearly their defence is a ‘relative’ weakness but that doesn’t mean they aren’t putting in defensive effort. (Yes I know both have been regarded as good defenders in their own right).

"good defenders in their own right''... Umm Jordan made the NBA All Defensive First Team 9 times and was NBA defensive player of the year....

Hey hey hey, how are you buddy? Here’s a cyber hug bruzzy.

My footy team lost its first game of the season by seven points. Luckily I don't live and die for football results and I have other things to do and care about in the upcoming weeks. Frankly the fact that a dozen of your kind swarm in every time the Pies lose just makes me cringe. Do you have nothing better to do with your spare time?

A correct observation but when do any two teams turn up in round one and execute all of their skills perfectly?
It was poor even by round 1 standards. Last night’s game was superior on that front which I don’t think many would have predicted.

Pressure was also lower. It’s all very well to expect and enjoy a high skill level but the general pressure on anyone with or near the ball tonight was a lot higher

This was the midfield touted as Collingwoods trump card of 2019. All summer I've heard Grundy + Beams, Sidebottom, Pendlebury, De Goey, etc. rotating through and their first chance of 2019 to beat a good side and actually win for there side they were left wanting.

Not disrespecting the Cats whose midfield is also great, but this wasn't how the story was predicted to start.
I mean at various stages all of Dangerfield, Kelly, Duncan, Parfitt, Selwood and even Ablett rotated through the middle.

That's a pretty ridiculous roster.

Wow, you decide to bring up Freos last 2 averages in the last 2 seasons.

In 2016 Freo was averaging 73 points a game conceding 96. We only got 4 wins. Mainly due to our 25-35 point defeats. Still bitter about going 0-10 that season.

In 2017 it was 72 and 98 we got 8 wins. Very deceiving as there was a massive gap between our best and worst. If freo was averaging 70 points a game or 10.10.70. we were kicking 5.10.40 one week and 15.10 the next. I didn't mind it. Yeah we got pumped by 90-100 points one week and score only 5-6 goals, next week we score 14-16 goals at home and win by 20-30 points. we were 6-4 after 10 rounds, way better than being 0-10.

In 2018 it was 73 and 93. Again, Freos best and worst had a huge gap.

Oh and that saint Kilda 2009 side scored 2197 points in 22 games, just under 100 points a game.

Your 2017 side averaged 97 points a game and concede 82 points a game.

One last thing, go look at the last 3 premiership sides. Any of them averaging 100 points a game?

Actually, look at both 2018 GF teams. see if one was averaging 100 points a game.

Tl:dr

Lyon’s best attacking sides at their absolute peak kicked scores close to Geelong at their attacking worst.

Brilliant.

Happened half way through the 2011 GF too...... that the Cats won by 6 goals.
They're a bunch of nuffies the pies fans.
It's very embarrassing to sit through. When I heard it last night, I called curtains and alas 15 seconds later Parfitt slammed home an equaliser. Why can't the rest of the supporters take a hint?

I think Collingwood are a little overrated and Geelong a little underrated.

Both teams have the capacity to be very good at any given time.
Unfortunately cats will be rated after this win. That’s when it will fall apart !

I think all you can take from this game is that predictions of Geelongs demise have been greatly overestimated.

The Pies showed why they are rated at times but finished poorly. They lost the first two rounds last year, all is far from lost. A big club with good reason for optimism they were always going to be overhyped. This reality check likely has an upside I think.
