Good luck trying to recruit anyone to the club

Why? you cant seriously believe nobody wants to come because a few on here want Longmire gone at any cost.

If Carlton and Gold Coast and Fremantle are able to attract players then so can we.

Ryan Clarke types sure

Thats more to do with us having no money than nobody wanting to come to us, remember we used to be able to overpay players to tempt them to come here we dont have the extra 10% anymore.

Almost like we need something to equalize all the media opportunities and deals Melbourne players have :rolleyes: remember Mumford he was on 100k or something at Geelong and we offered him 1million over 3yrs.

Berg and Langdon were offered more money to come last season by reports

Players usually leave a sinking ship not jump on it

True but they stayed at their existing clubs, which are always in the power of position if the player is actually happy to stay.

If those players had gone somewhere else instead of us or the club they were with it would be a point worth noting, but that didn’t happen.

Anyways i fear and will never forget what Colless said a few years ago we will be spoon material and irrevelant if the 10% was removed.

We all thought he was exaggerating at the time.
I expect GWS will prove that theory massively wrong over the next few years. They have the same salary cap as us, I certainly want my club to aspire to far more than 'spoon material' and would be disappointed in anyone that suggested that was somehow an acceptable level.

In pre-response to the "GWS got given lots of draft picks in 2011", they need to fit those players into the same salary cap as everyone else.

It depends what sort of mindset the swans leadership have

Harley thought Reid Mellican Naismith and Mills made us a contender this year for instance

You know as well as I do that the players they have had to jettison due to the salary cap has allowed them to continue to top up with top 10 talent.

It’s not really the same, at least not yet.

We recruited too big forwards and had 3 top 10 picks since GWS came in (Heeney would of been top 10 in current system)

The best way for us to survive without the COLA (IMO) is to pursue an extremely disciplined list management strategy. Recruit to fill needs, don't overpay players, and quickly cut players who won't make it, to give ourselves the best chance of finding the next player who is up to it, and perhaps sign the occasional star player (see Tippett Buddy) when the opportunity arises. See swansfan51 I do read your list management posts. ;)

Colless' warning was real (he was a smart guy), but it doesn't have to become true.

2013: 3 first round picks, 2top 10(1 & 2 plus 14)
2014: 3 first round picks, 3 top 10 (4, 6 & 7)
2015: 3 first round picks, 1 top 10 (7, 13, 16)
2016: 4 first round picks, 2 top 10 (2, 5, 14, 20)
2017: 1 first round pick (11)
2018: 3 first round picks (11, 14, 22)
2019 they have a future first already traded in (Essendon I believe).

GWS have extremely poor player retention.
It is what will prevent them stabilising their list & thus having any success, which apparently is a p'ship. Anything other than a p'ship is failure. So based on this measurement, GWS have failed & are no closer to a p'ship than us but at least they are nice to watch while they are failing.

Depends on your metrics for success. Clearly you take an absolutist position, ie there are 17 failures and but one success each year.

If our blokes hit a hot winning streak and fluke the 8 (would take the players ignoring the Coach) there would be some modicum of success. The cherry on the 🍰 would be Horse's departure.

Actually I don't B52. i believe that the Buddy recruitment & Longmire's coaching has been a success having won a flag & 2 runnerups. I'm part of the bad old days & will never forget.

So, it looks like we may have significant turnover at end 2019. At the least Tippett, Smith, Reg, McVeigh and KJ will go. Each would be on good coin.

Potential new Coaches will already be running the tape measure over the list, looking at those who have growth potential.

Port and the Crow's will have an interest in Hewett, Haywood, Dawson and even Rose. Even the latter has an upside that may attract another Club. I hope the Club and new Coach do their utmost to keep the four.

Jones most likely will join his brother at Melbourne. Even a new coach and better contract offer may not be enough to keep him. At best we could expect a second rounder.

Reid should be put up for trade. He is not likely to be part of a resurgent Bloods outfit. Hopefully he can string together a few decent games. If so we could get a late 2nd rounder from a gullible Club. #lollies.from.Norf ?

Parker is my priority for a trade. He's fit enough and with a few good games may attract a late first rounder. If offered should a new Coach grab it?

The way we are going we would probably trade the older Jones in!!
