Coach Worsfold - On the brink?

Remove this Banner Ad

You can have all the outside runners and best forwards in the comp but the fact of the matter is you only have one genuine inside midfielder who can get it into their hands

Until that problem is addressed Essendon will continue to rely on slingshot offence witch will only carry a team so far

Errrr Essendon won both the clearance and contested count against Richmond. They've only lost the clearance count once and are positive in contested for/against, going 6/4 and sitting 6th in the league from memory. The glaring issue this season is forward, be it delivery inside 50 or use once its in there.

Thought this thread was about the bombers?

Anyway. Don’t rate their list build. Lacks real grunt and gut running for the modern game.

Don’t care who they get in to coach them next year but it’s happening if Lloyd is agitating in the media then he has friends doing it at board level. Shades of Knights all over again.

Lol did Worsfold underachieve with West Coast? brilliant midfield between 04-07, but shocking forwardline. What was the forwardline in 2005 GF, Gaspar and Gardiner?

I was actually impressed at how he got West Coast back into prelims in 2011.

Essendon’s list appears to be made up of overrated players from other clubs.

“Rating” of the list, whether you think it’s great or s**t, is all subjective. You can only go on facts, what they’ve produced.

We won 12 games in 2017. So there’s a baseline.

We won 12 games last year. Zero improvement.

We’ll see how we go this year.

Since 2017 the list has had no significant departures, it’s certainly not old - in fact there’s been plenty of youth come through - and we’ve picked up four mature age recruits, all of whom are best 22: Smith won the B&F last year, and Shiel, Stringer and Saad would all be top 5 in it this year.

It’s totally reasonable to expect improvement on 2017. It’d be extremely strange not to.

If there’s zero improvement again, of course the coach is under pressure.

Your team is full of B graders and plodders but your coaches have implemented a system that allows them to shine, We need that system and it seems that Worsfold and friends are struggling to do it.
Richmond are a well drilled team. They beat my mob Freo in Perth without Cotchin, Rance and Riewoldt.

Mate, rubbish statement. Take the emotional element out and look at your list.
Our lists are so far apart you can’t even compare the two.
You haven’t won a final since 2004. How many finals appearances since?
Seriously, Heppel, Hurley, Saad, Stringer, Tippa those type of guys are B grade. You know why? They are inconsistent.
Zaharackis, Bellchambers and a heap of others are worse.
You got 3 A graders/4 max.
It’s not all on the coach.

Heppel and Zacharakis would be elite if they were coached under Clarkson or Hardwick.

Clarko would indoctrinate and Brainwash mids the art of doing decent 20-40 field kicks.

Hardwick would bash the softness of some of those mids and toughen them up too.
This is the whole point.

Essendon don't have a midfielder as good as Dusty or Cotchin.
Essendon don't have a forward as good as Reivoldt.
Essendon don't have a back as good as Rance.

And Richmond needed every one of them up and firing having career best years to win a premiership. The following year they were a tad off their 2017 form and that cost them massively.

You need to be very very VERY good.

And Essendon are not very good. Period.

Umm......

Essedon dont have any mids as good as Dusty or Cotchin. That said Under Clarkson, Heppell, Zackarakis, Devon Smith and Dylan Shiel would go from B graders to A grade mids.

Essendon dont have a good forward as Riewoldt. They do and he is Injured yes I am refering to Daniher. He kicked 65 goals last season.

Essendon dont have a Good tall defender like Rance? True. Hooker is half decent.

If Clarkson was the coach of essendon, you would be suprised how many of these blokes can play beyond the ball of duty.

Yes Richmond needed Dusty, Cotchin, Riewoldt and Rance to have career best years to win the flag.

But on Grand final day, Houli, Prestia, Lambert and Shane Edwards got plenty of the ball and got 20-25 disposals each. These were the other solid workers outside their "Big 4" Cotchin Remarkably only had 21 on the day.

Riewoldt only kicked 2 goals. So did a few others. Richmond had a solid spread of goal kickers that day. The squad overall was well drilled and Solid.

One of the main Reasons they won the 2006 Flag was Quentin Lynch. They would of won the 2005 GF with a half fit Phillip Matera. In 2005, Quentin Lynch Kicked 31 goals from 22 games.

In 2006 Lynch kicked 65 goals from 25 games.

In 2007, It was 52 goals from 24 games.

West coast made the Prelims in 2011 off the back of the old veterans left in the 2005-6 Grand final sides in Kerr, Embley Glass etc. Plus they had a god forward structure too. Darling was a rookie, kicked 24 goals from 23 games. Lynch Kicked 28 goals, Kennedy kicked 59, LeCras kicked 47.

Being a non Essendon person makes him vulnerable

Bombers are in a bad rut and going through what we did in the mid 90's .... "we have a great list, it must be the coaches fault, let's sack him that will fix it".

Getting new coaches every couple of years doesnt help the players, it in fact makes them feel unsettled and they end up playing as individuals to save their own careers. At this rate it will be another 10 years before Essendon break the cycle.

Next it will be ... we have to stop choosing non essendon people and hire one of our own ...

Good luck bombers :thumbsu:

Not surprised really. By the end of his tenure at WC, supporters were saying Worsfold wasn't a good coach anymore. He's been riding that flag win for a long time now.

He's had 4 years.
Despite his insistence he's only had 2.

4 years isnt very long to turn around a club that was a complete shambles, your mob is showing clear signs of impatience and that happens to teams who once had experienced dominate eras.

Richmond gave Wallace 4.5.

Dumping him turned out alright.

We also had Danny Frawley for 5 years prior to that. How many coaches have you had since Sheedy?

As I said earlier, your in "Richmond 1990's mode" not late 2000's Richmond.

Also regarding Wallace he actually made us worse in his last season with us, I dont see Essendon on the bottom getting smacked every week. As I said it's just sheer impatience.

Than it took Hardwick 7 years to win a flag despite going backwards in 2016

Improvement isn’t just a straight trajectory upwards

Even then it took a large review and a change of assistant coaching staff.

What do we know about the quality of assistant coaches at Essendon? Neeld has already been sacked.
