Even our best universities are being poisoned by far-Left ideology

Universities once celebrated achievement, critical thinking and diverse views but are now mired in groupthink and the promotion of views that have created a hostile, genuinely intolerant environment

One would have to look long and hard to find institutions as captured by the toxic doctrine of identity politics as universities.

Institutions that once celebrated achievement, critical thinking and diversity of views are mired in groupthink and the promotion of a far-Left ideology, particularly in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

If you have a child who is contemplating higher education, then you should be aware of what is happening at Australian universities.

The growth of junk degrees and the devaluation of university education has coincided with the rise of cultural Marxism.

Indoctrination starts at primary and secondary school where, under the guise of “inclusion” and “diversity”, a Left-wing narrative that is neither inclusive nor diverse is relentlessly pushed.

When parents see these weasel words, they should examine closely what is being promoted.

By the time students enter university, they have been well conditioned to swallow increasingly radical notions like the doctrine that Western civilisation, the greatest global force for equality, freedom, enlightenment and opportunity, is hopelessly mired in racism, sexism and bigotry.

Emotions are allowed to trump facts, history is redefined and students are encouraged to see the world through a simplistic prism of the oppressors and the oppressed.

It’s a phenomenon that has created a hostile, genuinely intolerant environment at universities, where robust debate and pursuit of truth can be tantamount to hate speech.

When mainstream conservatives are routinely attacked, silenced or completely deplatformed, then you know something has gone terribly wrong in our learning institutions.

Of course, this isn’t a uniquely Australian problem, the radical Left’s march through institutions is evident in the US, Britain and much of the West.

coincided with the rise of cultural Marxism.
Anders Behring Breivik, charged in the terror attacks in Oslo, Norway, compiled a 1,500-page Manifesto.
The manifesto states that "Political Correctness" should be called "Cultural Marxism".
Breivik's core thesis is borrowed from William S. Lind's antisemitic conspiracy theory about "Cultural Marxism."

Are you and Rita using the same definition of "Cultural Marxism" as terrorist Breivik?

Cultural Marxism is thrown around a lot by the alt-right.

I'm trying to lock down a specific definition. I thought a good start would be to exclude well known 'definitions' of Cultural Marxism, and work back from there.

Breivik is a terrorist. Most people would consider him insane.
So most people would disagree with his view-points that led him to commit such an atrocity.

That ardent defense of free expression is behind a paywall.

She mentions emotions trump facts but provides no facts, and that article reads as one prolonged emotional outburst.

Like lots of you, she falls to the supposition that universities are entirely made up of gender and critical race studies within the Humanities departments.

In reality, these already small mini-departments are among the first to have funding cut and have tiny enrolments relative to other courses. Unis are moving into vocational education and have become 'providers'. The emphasis isn't on intellectual development, but training. Not to mention the reliance on foreign students in engineering and some commerce courses.

She's perfect for tabloid media. All emotion, no facts.

Spot on. The irony of accusing universities of not being driven by fact is beyond the pale.

Fact of the matter is Studies in Human Society accounts for 3% of the research income generated by Universities (my source, the Australian Research Council's Excellence in Research Australia report - https://www.arc.gov.au/excellence-research-australia ). The vast majority of research is done in Medicine, Engineering and Biological Science. Enrolments look a little different with a higher percentage of students (20%) enrolled in Society and Culture studies (https://docs.education.gov.au/node/51956 ) - still hardly the hotbed of Marxism that Panahi is claiming.

I've been involved in higher education for close to 30 years and I reckon this is the most conservative I've seen it. Sure, there are Marxists and Queer People but there are plenty of young Liberals and Pentecostal Christians as well. The article seems to be most put out that academics have the audacity to actually question mainstream conservatives - would she be just as outraged if academics were attacking mainstream leftists?

Academic freedom should allow for critical discussion as long as it is based on evidence and logic. Which Panahi's article quite clearly wasn't.

BTW - hilariously the only link provided in the snippet was an article to International Rankings which shows Australian Universities batting well above average especially when you understand the methodology used in the rankings. One of the areas where Australia gets slaughtered in the rankings is student to staff ratio - we have incredibly high ratios compared to other countries and this is one of the drivers in the calculation methodology. Don't go blaming student unions or safe spaces - blame the Federal Government for under-funding the system.
