Opinion Why are the interstate teams so bad? How do we fix them?

? 13 out of 15 premiers have been Victorian. This is not just a port problem.
Freo, Crows, Gold Coast, GWS and Brissy should also work out why haven’t got it don’t the past 15 years, not rocket science

Interstate teams coast through the season on home ground advantage only to get found out when it matters.

Nothing to do with where the grand final is played, which I’m sure is what this thread will turn into. It’s an easy excuse.

Is home advantage not offset by away disadvantage?

Off course where a game is played matters? What kind of low IQ statement is that?
Studies have conclusively proved this - there are multibillion dollar sports leagues out there beyond our semi-professional parochial game - this really has been looked into believe it or not.

How many of those years did an non Victorian team lose a home preliminary final resulting in the Victorian team that beat them winning the flag?

2015 - Fremantle lost to Hawthorn
2016 - GWS lost to Western Bulldogs

Any I’m missing any?

They’ve had the opportunities, they just haven’t taken them.

10 bites lol. People follow one club. Go tell saint and Carlton supporters how lucky they are and the disadvantage that West Coast get with as they spend the same off field as every other club
There are 10 clubs in Victoria. There will always be at least a couple of Victorian clubs in contention. Add in the inherent victorian advantage in finals and this means that Victoria as a market will always win more flags. As is being shown over the past decade.

Equalisation please

This is an AFL wide problem.. obviously something is wrong
The clubs that haven’t got it done have a problem. Port getting belted tonight isn’t a league wide problem 😭

People follow one club, people don’t get excited when another Vic club wins.

Vic finals advantage. No finals played in vic this year, or last year

The grand final being played at the G does not matter. Interstate teams are struggling to make the grand final despite hosting plenty of home finals.

It’s a totally different argument.

Why'd you use that stat? Stop the year after a 6 year streak of non-vic sides winning the premiership? I guess 8 of 20 was too proportional to the number of vic vs. non vic sides in the comp?

Agree on this.
It's not like non-Victorian teams havent made it to GFs either.

That said it's definitely trending in a certain direction. We'll see what continues to unfold.

But why are they losing, it’s obvious after the last 15 years that interstate teams need help of sorts.. I don’t understand how only 2 of 15 premiers have been non victorians

The premise of the thread is talking about in general, not just this season (not that I agree with the OP premise anyway).
Otherwise there would be no need to 'fix' them if we were looking at just this season in isolation.

Because an interstate teams ladder position is artificially inflated by having 10 true home games during the season. You only need to beat 2-3 Victorian s**t kickers in Melbourne and that’s finals almost guaranteed.

15 years is an awfully convenient period mind you.

Haha please. The poor West Coast Eagles with their massive empire in the West.

So you’re saying we inflate our ladder position by our home games? So we are worst than what it appears, shouldn’t an enquiry happen then if that’s the case?

Non Victorian teams every year travel the most and teams like Carlton barely leave Victoria. No doubt must come into play.

Nah. Don’t discount the impotence of the non Vic teams this year.

WA teams hopeless and couldnt crack a finals spot.
Brisbane with a home final and couldn’t get it done.

NSW teams couldn’t get it done.

Port with two home finals and couldn’t do it.

Melb and Bulldogs playing away and neutral finals. Incredible effort.

So what has changed between those years and the last 15? Why in the last 15 years only two have won

I don’t know, why did Dees win 6 flags in 10 years 54-64 and zero since?

The last 2 years Vic sides more disadvantaged than anyone really in finals and both times all Vic GFs. Sometimes just how it goes.
