Rules Interchange infringement wins Sydney the game

Happy to wear the result of the today before anyone sooks, but that makes too much sense. AFL asleep at the wheel as usual.
Actually the mob asleep at the wheel would be the club break the interchange cap.

What happens if a player does a hammy with a bit more time in the game to go and ball is up the other end?
And get the other team one kick away from their forwardline? That's never a good idea.

Not saying it's a great idea, just asking what do you with a player that's pinged a massive hammy.

Then you'd have to play with a man down in the last few minutes.

I don't understand why it's even permitted to make a 76th interchange - why doesn't the steward just say that the team has already made 75 and prevent players from coming off? Surely there are going to be situations where it's more valuable to give away a free kick and make an interchange than to keep a good player on the bench in a tight game, so it effectively means that a team can make an infinite number of interchanges so long as they're willing to eat the penalties. Dumb rule.

Stop making so much sense

It’s incredibly harsh, but it’s never happened before

What are you talking about? Interchange rules have been breached tonnes of times. Most notably in Hawthorn v. Geelong in Round 13 2013 with a free kick to Hawthorn right after several successive Hawthorn goals. Also know it happened in Round 23 2011 in Essendon v. Port Adelaide to give Essendon its first goal.

How can the umpires and the AFL let that decide a game of football?

If a club has maxed their interchanges then surely the reserve umpire or interchange steward gets out of their chair and lets the players know by standing in front of their bench with their arms out. Or they wave a red flag... Or something...

Free kick and 50m penalty for that? The infringement had zero impact on the game. Just call the player back.

What a farcical application of the rules. It really is pathetic.

This league is a joke

I've just read section 7 of the laws of the game to work out what should happen and the issue is this: it literally just says the interchange warden should notify the AFL, not what the response should be.

Honest question: is there any precedent for a free kick and 50 metre penalty being paid for this kind of infringement?

It just seems like the umpires decided they could make a penalty on the spot?

You may not like the rule and the circumstances were unfortunate for North, but it was the perfect application of the rule.

Have they shown the infringement anywhere yet?

There's plenty of situations every game where 2-3-4 players come off the ground at the same time. If they had 2 left and 3 players come off at once for example, how does the steward police that by waving a flag?

Penalty is absolutely fine, how many times does it happen? Just employ people that know the rules and this doesn't happen. Absolutely nobody to blame but themselves, North

The way I see it with no interchanges left the player can't technically leave the field so any other player that enters is a 19th player on the field.

Notice also how the umpires and the AFL give no consideration whatsoever to all the paying spectators who were there at the game, by letting them know with a hand signal or via the public address exactly why the free kick was paid.

Loyal fans who have devoted their afternoon to going to a game of footy, who paid their money and sat there for 2.5 hours cheering for their team and they're left with no fricken idea why the match-deciding goal was awarded. Some of the fans travelled a long way to be there and devoted their entire day or weekend. Everyone walking out of marvellous Marvel Stadium feeling like they've been gypped by a two-bit con artist.

The AFL doesn't give a rat's arse about its most loyal customers. They're happy to take our money and then sh*t in our faces with umpiring displays like we saw today, or by calling us bullies and racists if we exercise our right to boo opposition players.

They'll happily use the PA to blast our ear drums with advertising at half time so we can barely talk to our mate sitting right next to us.
But they don't use it to announce to the fans why a contentious mystery free kick was paid late in the game.
